Reviews

Curapedi I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.
Fairaher The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
Gurlyndrobb While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
Derrick Gibbons An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
thenachoman Sad and bleak best describes Lovely Molly. About half way through I realised there was not going to be a happy ending here, and I was right. The music is especially melancholic, painfully so, and perfectly pitched to what's happening on screen.Does the bleakness ruin the movie? Not at all. For me, Lovely Molly was about the damage abuse does to children. It should be sad and bleak.Lovely Molly isn't particularly scary, although it probably still classifies as a horror film, given the ending. It reminds me a lot of The Babadook, which also has a female lead who is undergoing massive psychological stress. (Both films have fantastic female leads too.) The Babadook is much scarier, but Lovely Molly will linger far longer because of its tragic back story.Incidentally, there's a lot of nudity in this film. One could perceive this as gratuitous, but the heavy context around it (i.e. child abuse) makes it difficult to view it in an erotic way. Maybe this is the point.
bowmanblue The Blair Witch marketing stamp is applied to yet another film. This time we're told that the writer/director of the cult classic which 'redefined the horror genre' (depending on your opinion of three kids running round a wood at night) is at the helm of this latest frightfest 'Lovely Molly.' Once again, the use of 'first person filming' is used for Lovely Molly, which tells the story of a newlywed couple who move into an old house in the middle of nowhere. However, when the husband is away driving for work, strange (and definitely not so lovely) things start to happen to Molly.First of all the good: the performances. Everyone does very well with what they're given and the acting is pretty hard to fault. However, there's not an awful lot of characters. The husband is largely away and Molly spends much of her time experiencing things on her own (then going and telling her sister about it every few days). The main problem with the film is that, although well-acted, it's really nothing we haven't seen before, i.e. walk round a creepy house and then get grabbed by some unseen supernatural force.Yes, there's a story woken in there somewhere, but, ultimately, there's nothing new enough here to really make it stand out. The reason Blair Witch worked was because it was original (or at least revitalised a genre that had lain dormant for a long time). This time the film-makers just retreads well-worn ground. It's okay, just nothing special enough to warrant elevating it over the other million similar horror movies out there right now.
tamogan79 I think it was a brilliant film, i must admit I watched it twice and then a third time to make sure I totally got it. lovely score in it also, beautiful in fact. the actress Gretchen lodge is brilliant (y) its is also good to see it from her point of view, IE other paranormal films give you the sense of something ghostly being there but with this movie ,as its her herself being haunted, i think that makes it more frightening, the fact that ,no us viewers don't see anything, hence imaginations going crazy trying to figure it out. There was a few times I changed my mind through the film from 'is she mentally ill?' and imagining this? to, yes she's definitely being preyed on by some unknown being.overall,i'm hooked...I just love it and I have also downloaded some of the band from the score 'Sweet Leda' who I had never heard before. their song Lovely Molly is beautiful and cant stop humming ans singing it all day. so...the films a wee cracker. jonnytheshirt The fact that I intended to write a review of Lovely Molly then forgot and about it, and a year and a half later I am now is testimony to how memorable the movie is. On undoubtedly a low budget with not a huge cast the overall quality I was impressed with and a real star of the show was the sound design. Its a creepy slow, but not too slow burner that quite gets under your skin. As an avid horror movie goer I'm rarely scared however Molly and its wonderful sound really creeped me out. The movie centres around Molly and her apparent mental problems, and the movie does a great job of actually running the fine line of guessing are they mental issues or is there something else going on, strong performances from all the cast rounded off this great little flick. Highly recommended for those who enjoy creepy horror however be aware the subject of some issues in the movie are adult rated.
