Karry Best movie of this year hands down!
Pluskylang Great Film overall
Fairaher The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
Matho The biggest problem with this movie is it’s a little better than you think it might be, which somehow makes it worse. As in, it takes itself a bit too seriously, which makes most of the movie feel kind of dull.
M MALIK lake bell is one of the few underrated actresses out there who can do wonders if the script is solid but this time she he writes, directs & starts in this comedy about voice overs in movie trailers.bell's direction is great she keeps it cinematic but the topic she chooses is totally dingy the characters never really develop the chemistry here at all i kept my expectations high for some witty strong dialogs but none of that comes now if we just look at the story lake bell plays a role of carol a girl who wants to be in the voice dubbing business she loves doing voice-overs on film trailers but her father does not approve this a bit.the voice dubbing acts hardly appear for few moments but most of the film is about the dysfunctional family, friends & affairs etc the film went off topic & never made a return to the root subject. The entire cast gets wasted here but Michaela Watkins performance is worth checking out & what the hell were Eva Longoria & Geena Davis doing here making a special appearance as for Lake Bell she is as usual stunning but problem is she really cant give her best here as she does in her other movies.it feels like lake bell really took the burden of directing on herself & forgot to add much variety & fun in her own character as well as the script she created a room for other actors but left herself out.the genre don't seem like comedy at all its more like a drama or a Rom-com as each an every scene gives you that vibe. Overall In A World 2013 is a disappointment without a doubt Lake Bell is a fantastic artist but i really hope her next directorial effort brings the best if she ever picks up the camera again my rating is 3/10.
john32935 Fans of movies will instantly recognize the title as the introduction to almost every movie trailer made in the 1980s, as famously vocalized by Don LaFontaine. This movies captures the small and competitive world of voice-over "artists" anxious to become the next big name in the business, and specifically the lead's attempt to become the first female to reach the pinnacle of the profession and to replace her father and his hand-picked (male) protégé.Lake Bell, the star, writer and director of this movie has created an interesting world of quirky characters and witty dialog although not a film without flaws. However the flaws are not so great, and the movie is so original that it merits a recommendation for you to take a chance on it.
DougInNC I hope you're lucky enough to see this movie - stream it on Amazon for free if you're a Prime member. Best movie in our house this year, mainly for the simple enjoyment of the characters that told the story. The casting, the acting, and the writing are all great. Why? The choice of actors didn't focus on big names (to me), but on people more concerned about the role. The acting was witty and consistent throughout. The writing was true to real life, with uncomfortable elements of conversation, and, yes, people talking over one-another at times (which some viewers did not like, but I found it genuine). This was the first time I can recall seeing Lake Bell. Was she great or am I just enamored with the resemblance to Amanda Peet? That comparison is more than striking. It seemed that she and Michaela Watkins truly were sisters, given their brilliant, somewhat confrontational, and I'm-there-for-you-when-it-really-matters interactions.Other things I liked: -Terrific sound mixing! Quite unexpected surround greatness.-1.5 hours told the story, and they didn't drag it out -No silly chase scenes or killings to hype the story-Not social commentary, just fun (other reviewers disagree) -Bit-part roles added, not distracted (neighbor, office staff)
Johan Dondokambey Lake Bell quite nicely wrote the story to incorporate the important aspects of the voice-over industry, which most people take quite for granted. There's the main focus of targeting the highest levels at the blockbuster movie trailer voice-overs. But there's also the lesser extent of commercials voice-overs and even vocal coaching. The main conflict that ultimately pits an overachiever father with his own denied protégé of a daughter nicely sums up the story. Yet I feel that the side conflict with Louis and the thing with Moe and Dani is rather unfinished that it only feels like it's there to eat up duration. The acting side is a standard overall. Lake Bell did quite alright in walking in the shoes of Carol. But I think that the rest of the characters are only doing enough to make it a connected story, offering nothing more. Though for me, Lake Bell should also receive extra credit for doing three jobs of acting in a lead role herself, directing the movie and also writing the screenplay.
