Platicsco Good story, Not enough for a whole film
melrosemyself I watched episode one. I'm not going to put myself through another episode. It was awful. Most Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice spin- offs that I have encountered have been pretty bad, but this one is quite terrible. The concept for the show is good, putting a modern day character into Austen's setting for Pride and Prejudice. Indeed, the cast of Austen's characters in this film were quite good, and I would watch it for them if I could stand the main character. But the modern day girl, Amanda, comes across as cheap and slutty. As a main character, I HATE her. If reading Austen is all about going back to a chivalrous time with great drama and romance, the main character Amanda entering this world just reminds the viewer of everything that your average Austen fan is trying to escape. It is an insult. The only reason this film got 7.5 stars is because there are some serious Austen Pride and Prejudice junkies out there who go about giving good reviews to anything that has Mr. Darcy in it.
SnoopyStyle Londoner Amanda Price (Jemima Rooper) is a fanatic for Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. She reads it over and over again. The modern world is unsatisfying. Her uncouth boyfriend drunkenly proposes to her. Elizabeth Bennet walks through a hidden door traveling from the Austen literary world into Amanda's bathroom. At the second time, Amanda walks through the door while Elizabeth stays behind and the door gets locked. Amanda pretends to be Elizabeth's friend as the story of Pride and Prejudice unfolds. The story goes wrong and Amanda struggles to set things right.Jemima Rooper is a great brassy fish out of water. She's a terrific comedic actress. I don't think this is only for fans of Pride and Prejudice. Although a passing knowledge of the characters would be helpful. A deep fandom may actually hinder enjoyment because this is more like an alternate universe. It's great to have a Hex reunion with Christina Cole. I would have liked to have Elizabeth stay in the entire story especially if she's played by Gemma Arterton. This is a fun romp for fans of all kinds.
Aliza Angelica I regret watching this show. If it weren't for curiosity I'd never have ! Except for a few scenes which I found funny; the whole series was abominably lame !! The idea of the this series was a great one, the execution however was poor. The characters just weren't themselves. The acting was okay-ish especially the woman who played Mrs. Bennet was so annoying. Bingley felt more like a pervert than a gentleman especially in the beginning and later on becomes a drunkard.Amanda, who is shown to be such a huge fan of Pride and Prejudice; claims to know everything of it by heart and loves what its all about, doesn't know how to behave once she gets inside it. And why in the world do Mr. and Mrs. Bennet believe her so easily and let her stay at their house ? Heck, they believe every stupid excuse she tells them. And it just wasn't explainable why everyone kept falling for Amanda !! I found her highly intolerable. I'm sure its a dream of every P&P fan to go inside it but I can bet no one would have behaved as stupidly as she does. And as if it wasn't painful enough having to watch her idiocy, we are then given the suffering of having to watch every man in the story fall for her. I'd expected so much more from LIA. It was a letdown, the ending to be specific, I wouldn't have mind seeing Mr. Darcy with any other woman if she'd been likable. I'd much rather Amanda has settled everything back to normal and returned to her place for good !Shameful. Its a pity I had to see this.. thing. Poor Jane Austen.
TheLittleSongbird I am not necessarily a devout "purist". I don't get upset when a plot line or character is completely changed, but I do like it when an adaptation makes an effort to stick to the spirit. This series is not an adaptation strictly speaking, but there is a lot of Austen that is essential to the pivotal story. I will admit I was very intrigued by Lost in Austen and its idea, but apart from the wonderful production values and the performances of Hugh Bonneville and Alex Kingston, Lost in Austen didn't live up to its excellent concept. The writing is stilted apart from one or two amusing moments, some of the series felt rushed and the story is muddled, underdeveloped and contradictory(look to the ending for any example of this). Another major problem is Amanda, there were times when she was unforgivably stupid, and while it was lovely to see the Austen characters for me little was done to make me properly care for them. Jemima Rooper tries hard, but I found her unconvincing overall, and Elliot Cowan overdoes it. All in all, didn't work for me I'm afraid. 2/10 Bethany Cox
