Reviews

Acensbart Excellent but underrated film
SanEat A film with more than the usual spoiler issues. Talking about it in any detail feels akin to handing you a gift-wrapped present and saying, "I hope you like it -- It's a thriller about a diabolical secret experiment."
FirstWitch A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.
Candida It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
dbborroughs After a war on a far off Island is won women are recruited to come be with the soldiers and help set up a new colony. Of course things don't go right. Based on a play by Jeff Noon, best known for the Vurt novels, this is a mediocre film based on a mediocre play. I'm a huge fan of Jeff Noon's writing but I really don't like the play since it feels much too obvious for what it is. You can feel the film's heart on its sleeve as it criticizes the Falkland's war, the military and male female relationships in a macho environment . It's all much too obvious. I would take a pass if you come across it unless your a fan of the cast which includes Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone and Emily Lloyd.
angelsunchained Horrible. Terrible. Awful. Words just can't describe this artsy, soft-core, sex-violence romp, passing itself off as an anti-war film with deep meaning. The characters are just that, "Characters". One is crazier then the next. Each is suppose to be haunted by a war that has just ended, making each a wild, out-of-control, sex-starved, bunch of psycho misfits. The acting is way over the top, cheesy, and basically terrible. Guy Pierce looks pale and sickly, and at one points climbs up a tree to scream at the moon in a lunatic howl. He must of seen the final result of his performance in this smelly mess. However, there are a few minor good points. A beautiful island, a host of sexy-long legged British beauties who can't wait to strip off their clothes, and even the legendary 1960s model, Twiggy, ardently kissing another women; bedding her down in the process. If you're looking for a great ant-war film, rent or buy Paths of Glory or MASH, and don't waste a cent on this mess.
jonasjobbar This was just weird Maybe something got wrong when they transformed it from play to manuscript for this didn't work at all. Everybody justacts weird, and I am not sure if it was the characters that were stoned or the script writer/director...crap 2/10watched it once, giving away the DVD...and Guy Pearce: What is he trying to do? A nerve damaged weirdo or a drug addict?want 10 lines 10 lines of text I am singing in the rain just singing in the rain what do you want to use these crappy rules for ?Short comments should be OK too, especially for crappy movies
xilk A disappointment, I must say, since it's based on a play by Jeff Noon, one of my favourite writers. A psychedelic futurism is sought, with lots borrowed from A Clockwork Orange, but the weird photography doesn't quite fly and it does all get a bit stagey. The cast is very good though, but again, the performances are more theatrical than cinematic. The script is in itself quite oddball enough, and could have taken a more deadpan, or highstrung, or subtle rendering. Just imagine Kubrick behind the camera. Some very memorable moments, my favourite: the prince visiting the newlyweds. It should have been better, but it's still worth seeing (for those who like this sort of thing); ordinary it ain't.
