Murphy Howard I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
FlashCallahan Philip Sauvage is a Combat Vet who's just spent the last 3 years fighting in Afghanistan and 'Eyeraq', who is hired to be a bodyguard to a former World Heavyweight Boxing champ to protect him and his family against a Rap Music Mogul. He sets up a team called "The Hard Corps", complications arise when the boxer suspects that his sister may be in love with the bodyguard...So Van Damme plays yet another damaged being who is hired to protect some people, but this this time, it's a little more street trhan anything he's done before.Van Damme is as good as he always is, and Fox puts in a reasonable performance, it's just a shame that the film relies on stereotypical villains who walk with a swagger and hold their gun at a silly angle (Van Damme actually picks someone up on this).Lettich directs the action at an adequate pace, and it's one of the better Direct to DVD efforts he has done, but then we have the silly romantic sub-plot that gets in the way of the narrative. It's pretty pointless and adds no depth to the story, they could have left fox's character out and focus more on the Rap moguls character and fleshing his back story out more. Not a bad effort, Van Damme fans will be pleased.
lost-in-limbo A tired looking Van Damme shows up like an odd man out in this straight-to-DVD hard "core" gangsta revenge action joint, as he plays an Army Vet that's hired as a bodyguard for a former heavy weight boxing champ who's targeted by a man who he put away by not throwing a fight. But now that he is released, he begins receiving threats. There he must whip in shape some wannabe gangsta posse into professional bodyguards willing to take a bullet for their man/woman, while also fighting past war traumatic stress that haunts him and then there's the sister of the heavy weight champ who might just be falling for our man. A steely Van Dame pretty mops around (like he's thrown right in to the deep end), until it reaches its bloody climax of punishing gunfire. You know busting a cap. The camera does get a good workout though, but while there are some masterful martial arts by Van Damme, it's mainly kept as a one-off side-dish. Too often is spends a lot time posing about (the dramas), thinking its hip and cool and this only makes it even more drawn out when it could have been much tighter. It's simple and predictable with its plot devices, but it does entertain when it gets moving. It's too bad that it wasn't all that often. Competent, but dull."That's an order soldier."
Comeuppance Reviews "The Hard Corps" came out only three months after "Second In Command". That was fast. The plot is: Phillip Sauvage (Van Damme) is hired to be a bodyguard for a heavyweight boxer named Wayne Barclay (Raz Adoti) who is receiving death threats from gangsta Terrell Singeltery (Viv Leacock). Sauvage not only has to protect Wayne, but also his sister Tamara (Fox). The movie is fast-paced at 110 minutes, but it still could be edited a bit. One character named Leonard, who is Terrell's nephew, is annoying and has way too much screen time. Besides that, the movie has some good action sequences, including the Uzi gun battle in a parking lot, and a excellent fight between Wayne and Phillip. It shows Van Damme can still kick ass any time. For more insanity, please visit: comeuppancereviews.com
Frank Markland Jean-Claude Van Damme stars as a special forces guy (you know the type) who is hired as a bodyguard for a world champion boxer, seems that a gangster has put a hit on said boxer, and despite Van Damme's reluctance, Vivica A. Fox convinces him to take on the case. The film I was most reminded of was Blackjack with Dolph Lundgren (Minus the color phobia angle.) and this is because the film features a similar plot line. Jean-Claude Van Damme is in decent form, he excludes a charisma and is in his strong action man role, which has been lacking lately in his later straight to video movies. Alas despite Van Damme's effective work the movie still doesn't work due to the over-edited action sequences and lame camera angles that cut away far too much so we can't get into the action as well. The choreography is certainly decent but the action is too chopped up to be effective. Also Van Damme has a group of other tough guys and gals helping out,so we see more action with them then with Van Damme, which is sort of a letdown. The movie is passable, I mean I wasn't bored with it and despite its routine story and predictability the movie does deliver what it promises. I just wish the movie would've given us more Van Damage and less camera trickery. In the end though it's not one of Van Damme's best. It is in fact a lesser film from Jean-Claude.* * out of 4-(Fair)
