Reviews

Cathardincu Surprisingly incoherent and boring
PodBill Just what I expected
Suman Roberson It's a movie as timely as it is provocative and amazingly, for much of its running time, it is weirdly funny.
Griff Lees Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.
satori9512011 Duly I must report that I didn't get it at first. First time I saw this film I thought it mediocre at best but it had something going for it: the music, the music was superb and due to it I saw the film over again and realised that my first impression of it was perhaps not quite correct and again the music caused me to see it once more at which point I realised that I had lost out on much of the dialogue the first two times due to the rapid subs I've come across in any film – you have the choice, follow what's on the screen or follow the dialogue you can't do both. However third time around I realised it was actually rather good for what it is, a romantic comedy. In fact I was very surprised when I discover that the film had got such appalling reviewers from film critics obviously I was not alone in my first impression of the film; then again as Sibelius said: don't worry about what the critics say there has never been made a statue over a critic.. It is not perfect, it has two low points I think which is the scenes when the two main characters reflect back in time which become somewhat longwinded but apart for this the film is a gem. It is funny stylishly photographed and choreographed and Preity Zinta, Bobby Deolm, Lara Dutta and Abhishek Bachchan delivers some of the best acting I've seen from them – as usual you can see on Abhishek Bachchan whether he thinks the script is any good, as he is not a man to give at the door, if he doesn't like the script, it is like he is on holiday, or has gone on strike (just check Bluffmaster or the Dhoom films) but in this film it is obvious he likes what he is doing, he is involved and is obviously having fun. Jhoom Barabar Jhoom is in point of fact the closest I've seen any Indian film come to Bend It Like Beckham. Personally I'm not a great fan of Bollywood comedies compared to English, German French and even American comedies they are a little too infantile, this one however is rather refreshing. I hope the critics hasn't scared them from doing it again.
Chrysanthepop Finally, got to see 'Jhoom Barabar Jhoom' after hearing mixed opinions of people. Anurag Kashyap has been credited as the writer but he claimed that he had an idea about a guy and girl meeting at the train station and they tell their stories but then 'someone else' tampered with the script and made changes. That said, I quite enjoyed most of the first half where Riki and Alvira tell their stories at the train station. It is the second half, once they leave the station, which is a downright disaster. The less said about it, the better. 'Jhoom Barabar Jhoom' starts, intervals, the interval of the post interval (that is an interval that takes place when you've finished watching three thirds of the movie) and ends with Amitabh Bachchan's 'item number' (which is the title song itself). Bachchan is dressed as a flamboyant busker who looks like he's ready to lure children and kidnap them. Back to the song, it's a catchy energetic number. There are two other versions of this song all of which work well. 'Kiss of Love' and 'Bolna Halke Halke' are also foot-tapping songs that have been brilliantly visualized. The costumes are a little too flashy (especially the horrible ones worn in the dance competition sequence, yes, surprise surprise, there's a dance competition). Where acting is concerned, Lara Dutta stands out as the French hotel manager slash British-Pakistani harlot. The character Alvira is nothing new for Preity Zinta and she does a fair job but frankly I'm a little tired of watching her repeatedly do this kind of role. Abhishek Bachchan is irritating to the core. I wonder why a sophisticated woman like Alvira would even like a sleazy toilet brush like Riki, let alone fall in love. Bachchan ought to fire his makeup artist-hairstylist or whatever for making him look like a sleazy turd of a pimp. Bobby Deol is dull. Shaad Ali has probably hit rock bottom (careerwise) with this movie (or at least I hope so because I don't want to see any worse than this). I would like to say this to whoever the writer is, whether it was Kashyap or some script-tamperer: Way to go for ruining what could have been at least good entertainment.
Ibuk Yash Raj has not had much luck at the box office of late, in 2007 they produced 4 movies and only one became a huge sensation and that was Chak De India and the three other that bombed were Tara Rum Pum, Laaga Chunari mein daag and Aaja Nacle. In my personal opinion I think that the box office was rather unfair to Aaja Nacle and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. It's one of those movies that I didn't expect to enjoy but my parents were watching so I watched it with them and was pleasantly surprised. JBJ may not be a masterpiece by any means but from an entertainment point of view it is pretty good. Not every movie is made to become a masterpiece, some movies are just made to provide entertainment which JBJ provides. The story was good but what really saves the movie is the wonderful songs, my favourite being the title track. The director Shaad Ali made full use of the Abhishek Bachan-Bobby Deol pairing, the part where they are both in the motorcycle and the tune to yeh dosti playing in the background(Amitabh Bachan and Dharmendra were both in Sholay)is a very good touch. In my opinion JBJ deserved a better fate at the box office, certainly a better fate than the over-hyped and disappointing Dhoom 2 which was a mega blockbuster but I disliked intensely. JBJ provides decent timepass entertainment and is certainly a lot better than most of the movie produced nowadays.
virindra Once I wrote, as a Bobby Deol fan, that he only had to play in a Yash Chopra movie. Because Bobby is a great actor, and Yash Chopra makes good movies. But I was wrong, yes Bobby Deol acts very well, but his part in this movie is too small. His entrance was great, but the special effects were horrible! Yes, Yash Chopra can make a horrible movie! Abishek proved in Kabhi Alvida that he can act very well. In this movie he did not act good. It was very bad! He could not make his character alive. It was like a painting that did not come out of his paint.Preity Zinta still is an annoying actress. The combination Zinta and Anishek was not good. The story between these tho was too predictable. It was funny that Amitabh Bachchan played in a song in this movie. It was like a good joke. But this joke was repeated several times. Then it ain't funny anymore. The actress Lara Dutta I guess was also annoying. She reached the annoying level of Zinta. Her accent was terrible. I didn't see the whole movie. I put the DVD out en I started to watch Cheeni Kum. Maybe tonight I am going to watch the end of this movie. With saying this, I must add that I never have seen a bad movie like this from Yash Chopra before.
