Synopsis

Everyone else sees Wilfred as just a dog, but Ryan sees a crude and somewhat surly, yet irrepressibly brave and honest Australian bloke in a cheap dog suit. While leading him through a series of comedic and existential adventures, Wilfred the dog shows Ryan the man how to overcome his fears and joyfully embrace the unpredictability and insanity of the world around him.

Merolliv I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.
filippaberry84 I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
Abbigail Bush what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
Derrick Gibbons An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
happytraumer I'd seen little bits and pieces of this show on TV every now and then, never really paying too much attention to it. It seemed a bit weird, -which it is, of course- and I never really knew what to think of it. That is until I was watching TV one night and it was on, and for some reason I stuck with it. It turned out to be the last two episodes of the show. Something unexpected happened: I was deeply moved. I found myself thinking about it the whole next day. I realized I hadn't been giving the show nearly enough credit. I'd always thought it was just a deadpan comedy that was just there 'for the lolz'. But it's so much more. So after that, I immediately started downloading all seasons (because it's not on Netflix here in The Netherlands - sorry, I promise I will buy the DVD's) and started watching it from the beginning. It didn't bother me I already knew the ending, as the ending was the thing that had made me watch it in the first place. And then I watched it again.Naturally the ending didn't have the same effect as the first time, but it's message is something I deeply cherish. And I enjoyed the ride that is Wilfred all the more. Jason Gann is a gem. He's incredibly funny and has such charisma. I understand the Wilfred in the original Australian version was more evil in nature, but I'm glad that despite letting him keep his dickish traits and screwy ways, this version also managed to give the character something lovable. The relationship with Ryan becomes more compelling because of this: you're rooting for their friendship. Elijah Wood was the perfect person to play Ryan, and their chemistry is the solid foundation of the show. What I love about Wilfred is that it isn't just one thing. It's not JUST hilarious, deadpan, uplifting, suspenseful, touching and deep. It's all of those things. I recommend this show to anyone. Not only is it a blast, in the end it will take you by surprise and teach you a profound truth about happiness. (I also hope to see Jason Gann do great things in the future)
CDTrannyLez ***Spoiler Alert*** I hate to give this show a low rating. It has credible actors like Elijah Wood, Dorian Brown, James Remar, Dwight Yoakum and Rutger Hauer. The show even manages to be occasionally amusing. My biggest gripe is that scary, creepy dog Wilfred. I mean what is he?!? A manifestation of Ryan's psychosis or something far worse? For me, Wilfred gives off a darkly sinister vibe, if not outright SATANIC. The way he acts, behaves and takes over Ryan's life is the way the DEVIL would trick his way onto a helpless victim. He turns Ryan into a drug addict, a jobless bum and worse, an antisocial deviant obsessed with a married woman. He encourages incest in Ryan towards his sister. Wilfred states he's happy that his brothers and sisters died inside a bag thrown in the ocean and the memory arouses him, I mean that's just diabolical! He makes Ryan engage in criminal and sordid behaviors like theft, armed robbery, assault & battery, vandalism, adultery and defecating in public. And when Ryan comes to his senses and tries to get his life back in order, that Demonic Dog Wilfred reels him back into a life of sin using "Wilfred-Lies" and "Wilfred-Manipulation". Throughout the whole season you have the characters involved in public urination, talking about feces and rubbing their private parts all over everything. Wilfred engages in atrocities like murder, attempted poisoning and copulating stuffed animals, he even causes the death of Ryan's father. The Wilfred/Devil makes tea using his owner's panties and tricks a single mom into acts beastiality and depravity. He joyfully admits to killing his owner's husband's dog and keeping the corpse. Ruby the Nurse hints to the fact that Wilfred is a hell spawn when she says, "he makes my bones rattle" and "that dog need to go back where he come from, the gates of hell!" In the next scene Ruby's conveniently killed. Its actually quite horrifying to watch this show when you understand what's really going on underneath the cute exterior. Most texts on this topic describe SATANISM as involving talking animals, engaging in putrid behavior with them and other atrocities as portrayed in this show. Remember, sin is desirable and attractive. Wilfred/Devil uses Ryan's weakness to manipulate him into a life of utter deviance. I expect the very last episode to have Wilfred/Devil taking off his doggy costume and revealing that he's actually LUCIFER and laughing at Ryan. And then while burning in Hades, Ryan would scream, "WHY?" And Wilfred/Devil would say, "you chose to commit those evil acts, I didn't make you do them, now pay the consequences, burn Ryan, HA HA HA HA HA!!!"
uplaypoker Well, I put off watching Wilfred because of the idea of a guy in a dog suit as one of the main characters. I felt like the idea would get worn out pretty quick, but so far I find it a refreshing change of pace. I am only through a couple of shows, so I don't know if they will be able to keep the series fresh, but I will say they did a top notch job casting Gann as Wilfred. I could think of a million people who would have killed the show if they were cast for that part. I will continue watching and will hope for maybe another dynamic to be added to the show. Possibly another main character, I am not sure adding a brother would work given the role the sister plays, but possibly a cousin or someone who can also hear Wilfred.
H P Okay I voted this a little low because the people giving this a 10 are ridiculous. The idea of the show is pretty good but starts to leave a bad aftertaste. The writers seem to run out of ideas within 3 episodes but somehow manage to finish the first season by turning it into a mess. By the second season they have no idea what they are doing, no ideas for the dog, and seem to milk any part of the show that gets a chuckle. That's fine and all but you can't go through 3 seasons milking the same "joke" that became flawed because the dog is real in some episodes and then just imagination in others. Oh and he smokes weed, we get it, it's just not that funny. The comedy of the dog is pulled off terribly, and Wood seems to just blast through his acting with his wide eyed look about 90% of the time. Could have just hired an owl to do the same thing. No consistency or logical plot, some episodes matter, other episodes are just disregarded like they never happened. The characters don't grow on you, but become people you are annoyed with.I started this show thinking it had great potential, and I did like the first 2-3 episodes, laughed 1 time in each, but it fell to 0, and then it just made me bored. Going from clever, to obnoxious bullocks, Wilfred.
