Synopsis

Complex, offbeat Detective Charlie Crews returns to the force after serving time in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Crews’ new lease on life has provided him with a Zen-like outlook, peace of mind and no need for vengeance, an attitude which can be challenging to maintain when someone he cares about is threatened — or when he is investigating the mystery surrounding the murder he was falsely accused of.

Reviews

Moustroll Good movie but grossly overrated
Dotbankey A lot of fun.
Bob This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
Darin One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.
spokanegolfer I just finished binge watching on Netflix. How is it that I've never heard of this TV series?? The show is/was wonderful! I would gladly watch another 12 seasons! Please note, the following possibly contains spoilers!! The show is about an easy going police homicide detective that is great at what he does. No fear, doesn't take crap off anyone, yet is calm and respectful of others! The detective has been wrongfully accused of killing a family. In addition to being a police detective, he owns a bar with a partner. This partner is the family that he is accused of killing. The first season is devoted to clearing his name and finding the real killer. Very sad the police did not investigate and chose to believe that he did it! The second season is largely devoted to figuring out why they did it!
Tweekums Protagonist Charlie Crews in a detective in the LAPD and he has just been released from prison after serving twelve years for a triple murder he did not commit. Understandably he wants to know who really committed the murders and why they framed him. His new partner, Dani Reese, is a recovering addict and to make matters more complicated it emerges that her father may be implicated in a massive robbery and the plot to frame Crews.Crews isn't the typical TV cop; he is a multimillionaire following his settlement, lives with Ted, his former cellmate who is now his financial adviser and most interestingly he has discovered Buddhism and takes a Zen attitude to life… something that frequently frustrates those he deals with but proves amusing for the viewer. Most episodes feature a 'case of the week' but in the background he is constantly trying to find out who framed him; something that could put him and those close to him in danger.I didn't start watching this series till after it had been cancelled so was constantly worried that all the buildup would be for nothing and we'd be left with a cliffhanger ending; thankfully enough major threads get tied up to leave a satisfying conclusion… although I still wanted more as I enjoyed it so much. Damian Lewis does a fine job as Crews and Sarah Shahi is good as his partner; the two have a good chemistry. Adam Arkin is a lot of fun as Ted and Donal Logue is entertaining as Captain Kevin Tidwell, a character who joins the show in the second series and has a surprising relationship is Detective Reese! The weekly mysteries are entertaining in a comparatively light way and the overarching mystery of who framed Crews adds a sense of danger. Overall I'd recommend this to anybody who likes their mysteries with a good dose of humour but without them being silly.
HawkHerald I found this series while in college for my BA and it quickly became a favorite. Charlie Crews is a homicide detective who was exonerated after spending 12 years in prison. Partnered with a recovering addict, Dani Reese (Sarah Shahi), Charlie has grasped a Zen philosophy and stress- free approach to police work. His seeming casual attitude to his job causes people to underestimate his abilities. Charlies remains observant, detail-oriented and unorthodox in a clever way. He lives with his financial adviser Ted Earley (Adam Arkin), an ex-CEO convicted of a white collar crime whom Charlie saved in prison, in a large mansion with no furniture benefiting from the large cash settlement he won after regaining his freedom and badge. His interactions with Reese are pretty funny and Ted is a decent comedic sidekick. What made this show stand out was the acting of Damian Lewis, he portrayed a confident professional who inwardly struggled with the traumatizing experience of his prison stint. The only times he approaches anger are when getting leads during his independent investigation of the murder he was imprisoned for, the murder of his friend/business partner and the man's wife and son. It was an awesome show and canceled way too soon.
SeriousJest This show's concept was brilliant. The cast was mostly awesome (especially Lewis, with outstanding supporting performances by Garret Dillahunt and Gabrielle Union). After the first episode, I thought for sure that this would be a 5-mug show. Unfortunately, over its 2 seasons, it turned out to be a mix of great creativity without the attention to detail and follow-through necessary to bring it to its full potential. The overall story lines and individual-episode plots were interesting, unique, and entertaining, and the dialogue was even pretty witty. I even liked the Buddhist voice-overs with lessons relevant to each episode. However, too many scenes seemed hokey and/or contrived. It felt like a bunch of effort and intelligence was spent on thinking up concepts for intriguing and entertaining characters and stories, but little effort was spent on fitting that creativity into a believable story. If your show is about police and murders, you should probably research some of that subject. For example, somebody needed to tell the directors and writers that it is not always appropriate for a policeman to draw his weapon in every circumstance. Although this series did not live up to its full potential, it was entertaining, and I did not feel that my time was wasted watching it.
