nickboldrini This film has dated badly, as special effects have improved, but its easy to see why it was so shocking at the time. The story is reasonably well told, and it harks back to the old Voodoo roots of zombies, which gives it a slightly different edge. There are plot holes and flaws throughout, but as an early example of the genre its worth seeing for completists.
gorf Zombi 2 aka Zombie Flesh Eaters aka Italians Shouldn't Make Horror Movies is one of the most overrated movies in the world. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be serious, or if it's a parody. The sadistic eye scene, the extremely unnecessary nudity, the "suspenseful" shootout at the end of the movie where they kill the slow-moving zombies one by one, the horrible music and the silly shark scene...you almost expect Leslie Nielsen to show up.I really don't get why this movie is so popular. It looks ugly, sounds ugly...it's not scary, it's not entertaining, there's no message, it's boring as heck. It's just pointless garbage. Maybe the fans saw this movie when they were teenagers and liked it because of the nudity and shocking violence. "I watch forbidden movies with my stoner pals! Take that, stupid mom and dad!".And it's not just Zombi 2 either, every single Italian horror movie I've seen is total crap. Americans may have lost the ability to make good horror, but Italians never had it.(Zero stars)
qmtv Excellent Movie. The acting and dubbing is OK, not great. The plot is OK, not great. But the zombie effects and kills are great. The wood in the eye. Cemetery scene. The bites. The scene where they discover the doctors wife being eaten by one zombie, then the wide shot of a few zombies eating the wife, it incredible. Great cinematography. Good music. This has been compared to and listed as an Italian sequel to Dawn of the Dead. It's not. I've seen Dawn many times and liked it until I saw it again last year. Then I realized how poor of a movie it is. The best part of the movie is in the beginning, after that the mall section, it is down hill, crap acting, the zombies are poor, and the comic section is stupid and the character motivation crap. Dawn sucks. Night of the Living Dead on the other had is an excellent movie. My rating is a B. A great B movie. 8 stars. 10 stars given for loser reviews.
jackthehack Lucio Fulci was never the star of the show. He made very good films in the 70s and they are now renowned as some quality murder mysteries(The Psychic, Don't Torture a Duckling). But he was overshadowed by Argento. He then made Zombie Flesh Eaters, reportedly written before Romero's Dawn of the Dead (AKA Zombi in Italy). But Fulci's work was released as Zombi 2, despite no relation to Romero's classic. Poor Fulci was overshadowed again. It is sad because this is one of Fulci's most focused efforts. There is some cheese(Well this is an Italian splatter film) but it's surprisingly good in terms of suspense and some decent acting. Much of the film's decent acting comes from Richard Johnson who adds a lot of gravitas and sadness to his "mad" scientist role. This scientist is just fed up from all the mayhem and wants to rest. Johnson conveys that brilliantly with his eyes. He gets some ripe lines but he says them like Shakespeare. My second favorite character is Al Cliver's Brian who is a legit bad ass with an amazing beard. There is some nudity. The kills are gruesome and excellent. There is a shark vs zombie scene which is surprisingly suspenseful. On the whole, this is a classic. One of Fulci's best efforts before he cemented his legacy with the 'Gates of Hell' trilogy.
