Reviews

Megamind To all those who have watched it: I hope you enjoyed it as much as I do.
Aiden Melton The storyline feels a little thin and moth-eaten in parts but this sequel is plenty of fun.
Sameeha Pugh It is encouraging that the film ends so strongly.Otherwise, it wouldn't have been a particularly memorable film
Kinley This movie feels like it was made purely to piss off people who want good shows
therealmozzie I am a huge fan of the book, it's actually one of my favorite books of all time. So when I heard that there was a movie being made about it, I was thrilled. The story in the book lends itself to film wonderfully, and I saw it opening weekend. 10 minutes in I regretted making my mom spend money on it. I was immediately put off by the visual style. I know many have praised the movie for its unique style, but it just did not work for me, specifically the faces of the princess and king. They seemed to elongated and unnatural, very different from the illustrations in the book, which were recreated beautifully elsewhere. Not horrible, but it was the first major departure from the book, and there are many still to come. I do realize that the movie is an adaptation and will differ in some aspects from the book, but there are good changes, like moving the death of Boromir to the end of the the Fellowship of the Ring and there are bad changes like adding Tauriel as a love interest for a dwarf that is going to die. Tale of Despereaux has a plethora of the latter. For starters the cook is now a man, there is a living representation of soup that has a major impact on the climax, Roscuro's story happens after Despereaux's, Despereaux and Roscuro are friends at first, the list goes on and on. These changes serve to move the story very far from the book. Roscuro is no longer the tragic figure who only wanted to live in the light but couldn't because society would never accept a rat, to a good guy who just made a mistake one time. Despereaux is no longer the mouse who dreams to be a knight solely because he wants to do the right thing, but has a double agenda of helping a friend. Not a bad moral, don't get me wrong, but that's not what made the book popular to begin with. While I'm not opposed to changing things from the source material, Ella Enchanted is both a favorite book and movie of mine, the changes have to make sense and remain true to the spirit of the original at least. Tale of Despereaux does not do that in the slightest. If you've never read the book and are under the age of 10, you'll probably like this movie. Anybody else will probably spend their time checking their watch or raging at how much was lost in translation to the screen.
p-stepien When a peculiar rat Roscuro (Dustin Hoffman) with an affinity for sailing, sunshine and gourmet food, happens upon the joyous kingdom renowned for its soup festival, his attempt to try out the local speciality has him fall into the soup of the queen, thus causing an unfortunate heart attack. Subsequently the king decides to issue a decree forbidding the rats and soup, inexplicably bringing about endless gloom to his land. When an adventurous mouse Despereaux (Matthew Broderick) is exiled from his people for being too brave, he decides to become a knight from tales he has read and save the beautiful Princess Pea (Emma Watson) from her fate. Together with Roscuro and a bumbling quartersmaid (Tracey Ullman) they will spur events that will change the kingdom forever...Rats and food shouldn't go well together. "Ratatouille" proved otherwise, but unfortunately his medieval predecessor Roscuro manages only to prove that the Pixar picture was an exception to the rule. "The Tale of Despereaux" fails however to bring in enough heart and charm to pull off this mean feat, instead a drab and slow exposition leads to a disinterested ending. Extremely somber in tone for a children's animation, at times even menacingly dark, this is a failure in most accords. Lacking humour, wit or allure, with dingy characters and an uninspired story, time flows by with reflections of taking a nap.
K Fong (kfong89) The qualities: - Superb graphics, expressive, beautiful and stylish; - Solid characters, both intrinsically and visually; - A compelling atmosphere, and mood in general. The flaws: - A chaotic script, confusing and unprofessional. They were too ambitious to keep as much as possible of the novel's sub-plots and secondary characters, but didn't know how to organize them according to the screen-writing rules.A linear direction: everything flows on too uniformly, the important scenes are not accented and developed enough. As such, it gradually becomes boring, and during the culminating moments it's positively anticlimactic. The disadvantageous comparison with "Oblio". That one had spark! This one is also smart, but less inspired.
g-bodyl It's sad that movie producers don't make this kind of movie anymore. This is a classic, wonderful fairy tale that is good for the whole family. It does have a few flaws such as this movie is too dark for a G-rating. But the movie itself works and it's not boring like many people say it to be.This is about a mouse who is different from the rest of the mice. After being kicked out of this tribe, he befriends a rat and together they must save a kingdom from darkness. This movie has an impressive voice cast. Matthew Broderick does a good job playing the hero mouse. The animation is pretty good. It looked like the animation was drawn. I liked it though. It reminds me of old Disney movies. In fact, this has a great moral like the rest. I liked this film a lot. I rate this film 8/10.
