Lucybespro It is a performances centric movie
Tedfoldol everything you have heard about this movie is true.
TaryBiggBall It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.
BelSports This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
GL84 Getting stranded on the way to a party, a group of friends seeking shelter at a seemingly abandoned farmhouse in the middle of nowhere finds a dangerous colony of bats turning people into zombies and tries to fend off the creature to get away. This here is one of the most surprising fun times around. One of the brightest spots here is the fact that it mixes two distinct and separate genres, the creature feature and the zombie genres, which is ingenious, creative and has one of the most plausible excuses possible for unleashing them. That also allows the film to keep up the suspense towards the end, since it could've easily stopped to induce the plot and lost momentum, while the acknowledgment of zombies running around is perfect at derailing that. That also helps the film's overwhelming suspense, which is quite out-of-the- ordinary. The barnyard setting is nearly perfect, being a creepy location with plenty of fantastic locations for creepy happenings and is paid off in grand style here with this settling holding plenty of fun action scenes. The early attacks here are great wit the flaping wings behind the doors and low screeching being quite fun while letting the darkness and great size of the barn serve really well during the early walk-throughs. It's big suspense scene is the one inside following the first attack as the footsteps above them add to their confusion finding their friend and the sudden appearance of the dead body and his resulting disappearance which is so finely handled that the cliché attack by the zombie at the end still gets the jump, due to how well the rest of the scene is built up. The attacks in general are plain fun, from the scene up in the hay loft or inside the greenhouse also works as the numerous bats flying around and swarming victims are all full of great scenes. There's some fun to be had from the zombies here are pretty good, distorted enough to be recognizable and mixed with various bleeding wounds, gnarled features and the usual zombie characteristics gives them a lot to like. Along with the nice gore here, it is an altogether fun film that doesn't have a whole lot of flaws. The film's biggest issues here are the opening and closing segments with the horror film host as they serve little purpose but to pad out the time. It's also hard to get into the film's pacing when a sizable portion of the time is taken up with these scenes, and the entire purpose with doing this seems to be entirely confusing as airing the film as such is entirely confusing. It also works with the long wait to introduce the bats to create a slow first-half as it's still pretty creepy, but there isn't a whole lot of action. It does get better in the second half, but the slowness is hard to get into. These here hold this back, but it's still quite fun.Rated R: Graphic Violence and Graphic Language.
Paul Magne Haakonsen Where to begin? There were just so many things wrong in this movie. Well, let's start with the fact that I made it 40 minutes into the movie and nothing, absolutely nothing had happened to keep me interested. So I turned it off out of sheer and pure boredom. And the quality of the movie just felt like it was shot on someone's personal digital video camera. It was gritty and dark, and very far from a proper movie production. When I buy a movie I expect a certain level quality. In the 40 minutes I suffered through, two (possibly three) deaths had occurred, but we had seen nothing of it. So it was a borefest of epic proportions. The acting in "The Roost" was mediocre at best. And it felt like some of the actors didn't fully buy into this movie themselves.I will never make a return trip to finish this incredibly dull movie, and it will now stand to collect dust in my collection.
jbruh2020 This movie is nothing short of absolute garbage. The corny old style horror host leads us into a movie that is even worse. After about 30 minutes of trying to develop a nonexistent plot and one dimensional characters we finally get to the bats. At this point we find that the bats' bite turns people into some kind of zombie vampire like things (which apparently look just like normal people). Okay, this movie might still have a chance, zombies are cool right? Well, they might be if we ever saw them again. The rest of the movie consists of the characters babbling, or sitting around, or walking around with some dramatic music only to have nothing happen. Not only is this movie uninteresting, it also isn't scary. The few times something actually does attack it can be seen coming from a mile away and usually ends with no more than a single bite. On top of how horrible the script and acting is the film looks like it was shot with some leftover equipment from the Vietnam era. I can understand if the director wanted to give the movie an older look but, in the end it just ends up looking bad and sounding worse. This movie completely fails to pay homage to the 70's style "B" horror movie to which it is modeled after. If your going to produce a low budget film you should at least try and write a script that can old the attention of an audience. If you want to see a good old style zombie flick just go get yourself a copy of any George Romero movie and pass on "The Roost".
Michael O'Keefe Pretty lame. Young people take a detour and become stranded. Duh, sound familiar? Simple formula; lousy acting. No elements of fear or fright till the last fifteen minutes or so. THE ROOST is part of a Friday night fright show on WDIE TV hosted by Tom Noonan. Four friends are on their way to a friend's wedding and decide to take a short cut that ends up being a detour. After running the car off the road, the four find what amounts to be a deserted barn. Something is not quite right. The rafters are lined with thirsty vampire bats that attack and turn their prey into the undead. Cast members: Karl Jacob, Vanessa Horneff, Sean Reid, Wil Horneff and John Speredakos.
