Guillelmina The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
a_baron "The Clinic" has been called a horror film, but sick is probably a better description. There is nothing supernatural about it but ultimately it is the things human beings do to each other that are really horrific. Set in 1979, this Australian film sees a heavily pregnant woman travelling through the Outback with the father of her soon to be born child. They check into a motel, he takes leave of her for awhile, and when he returns, she has disappeared. At this point and in view of his later actions, the viewer might be expecting him to rescue the damsel in the nick of time. Alas, he perishes in a car crash en route to do so. Meanwhile, she wakes up in a tub full of iced water minus her baby. The rest of the plot is equally sick, not to mention extremely implausible, although it is said to be based very loosely on true stories of infant abduction. Ironically and most sickeningly, not only is infant abduction a reality but so is foetal abduction; there have been a number of cases in recent years, perpetrated by lone, deranged women, perhaps most notably that of Julie Corey in the United States (where else?) who murdered her neighbour, cut out her baby, and tried to pass it off as her own."The Clinic" is not that gory, and the mastermind is not the usual villain, but unless you like depravity for the sake of it, best to give this one a miss.
Paul Magne Haakonsen "The Clinic" didn't really turn out to be worthwhile the time. It wasn't a scary movie, and it had a very silly storyline to it, which was attempted to be spiced up with some twist towards the end. The problem was that the twist turned out to be even worse than the movie had been up to that very point. The story in "The Clinic" is about a pregnant woman being abducted from a motel and she ends up in an abandoned abattoir along with a group of other women. They were all pregnant, but had their babies taken out from their bellies. And the women have to find out where their babies are and which baby belongs to which mother in a very gruesome manner.Storywise, then "The Clinic" wasn't particularly interesting or entertaining. The story just seemed a bit too far fetched, and there wasn't any sense of danger or real panic to be found amongst the women who were abducted and had their babies removed from their pregnant bellies.Actingwise, then people did good enough jobs with their roles, although there was a lacking sense of dread, panic and fear to be found here. Which I found odd, especially given the situation and predicament that the women were in.And the aspect of the story regarding the fiancée, was just cut short. That guy wasn't given much chance, nor was he really fully entwined into the storyline, and he was a side character, at best."The Clinic" was a dull and boring experience, and it is definitely not a movie that I will be watching again. It just didn't have anything worthwhile to captivate me.
jackmeat Movie review:Seems to be a "baby" theme going on here. In this movie, a couple (Tabrett Bethell & Andy Whitfield respectively) are traveling across the state to visit her parents. Well, of course she is pregnant, and in route they are cut off the road by some truck. Well, when the get back on the road, they decide to call it a day and stay overnight, on Christmas Eve, at some dive motel. Well, he decides to go out and get Chinese and when he returns (no Chinese) his wife, Beth, is missing, just a note on the pillow that we don't get to see. Well cut scene to where she wakes up in a strange room in a tub full of ice. As she comes to, she realizes she has been treated to that old kidnap and c-section gag (mommies may not be big fans of this movie) As she stumbles out of the room, she passes other rooms with tubs in them and she knows she isn't alone. In her attempt to escape the "warehouse" type area, she finds a locked gate and no way out. When she passes out, she awakens to 3 other women helping take care of her, all with the tell tale c-section blood stains on their clothes. So with no way out, they elect to find the babies after they find another women bleeding to death that says her baby was "blue." So off they go until they split up, of course, and one the girls (a mute) is attacked and killed, but is able to snap a photo of her murderer, and it is another victim (they all wear tops that have roman numerals on them). So now aside from not knowing why they are there, they must survive a crazy one of them stalking the 3 remaining surrogate parents. The typical "hunted" scenario here is used for the tension, but the movie does a very good job of keeping you wondering why this is all happening. As it moves along, little clues present themselves which I will let you unravel, it isn't rocket science, but it is better to let the movie show you. I enjoyed the pacing of this movie and not allowing the budget hamper down a well made, and presented film. The acting was very believable for an unknown cast (at least to me, you aussies may know them since this was made in New South Wales, home of all the crazies) The movie did not use gore to keep the tension and just used blood when it was appropriate. Oh, the husband part of the story, off trying to find her after she disappears, utilizing the assaulting a police officer method and stealing his car. He ends up beating the location of where the women are taken from the guy at the motel but on the way there, he runs over a trap of spikes that were setup on the road and flips his car, assumed dead. I won't say if he is or not, but that is the last you see of him. An original idea that did end in a bit of surprise. Just a very well written movie that should be seen. I would recommend this one if you run across it. 5.8/10 IMDb 5.3
mspolk2006 On the weekend, I will shuffle through On Demand looking for a good, well decent horror movie. While I don't think that "The Clinic" falls perfectly into that category, it does fall into the suspense genre, without a doubt. You have Beth and her boyfriend driving to her Mom's for Christmas, a big truck almost runs them over and then they decide to stay at a hotel for the night and head out in the morning. Add creepy hotel manager, mix in no gas in the car and you have the premise for a really good suspense movie. Beth is kidnapped while her boyfriend goes in search of Chinese food and then the mayhem commences. This movie was very good for what it is, the details to the story are all around if you are willing to pay attention. So it was a good choice for my random Friday horror selection. I wasn't satisfied completely with the ending so that is why it's 8 out of 10.
