Intcatinfo A Masterpiece!
Invaderbank The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.
Francene Odetta It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
little_miss_sunshine_44 I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about this film. It's captivating, but at the same time almost too slow and convoluted. It's beautiful, but at the same time disgusting and terrifying. There's almost too much going on, and yet there's barely any dialogue from the protagonist (does he ever speak??) ... and yet, he still manages to express himself and his thoughts to the viewer fairly clearly, even though a lot of his actions have to be deconstructed by the viewer to figure out why he behaves in such a way... It's very very artistic (in a good way), but it's a different "artistic" than I'm used to. It's not quirky, warm, or "endearing"... it's in a whole other realm and I don't know if I'll ever see anything else like it (I kind of hope I don't...) It's an extremely interesting film and I would definitely recommend it, however, years after I initially watched it, I still feel slightly sick and disturbed thinking about this film... It has definitely left an impression. Not the kind of film I'd go back and watch a 2nd time as it still kind of haunts me, but the fact that it has had such an impact on me is testament to the film. Go ahead and give it a watch, but don't expect the "artyness" of the film to be warm, inviting, or endearing... It's haunting, revealing of human nature and desire, and mind-boggling. At times it all becomes too much, you just have to hang in there and take a while to process the film after viewing before garnering a fixed opinion of it (it's taken me over 7 years and I'm STILL insure of how I feel). I'm surprised the rating on this isn't higher (even though I've only scored a 7). I assume there are countless people out there who would adore this film. I just think I watched this film when I was too young (around 15), and it has scared and scarred me a little. Now that I'm older I can appreciate it more, but it still leaves a dark and twisted aftertaste which makes me cringe at the thought of watching it again. I realise I probably should watch this film again (with my newfound maturity and outlook on life/the world), but I honestly don't think I can bring myself to do so... I just wish I didn't watch it when I was still young enough to be afraid of the bloody dark. I thought it was a rom-com!!!! Overall, I think this film is horribly good and deserves to be watched by everyone. It's too maniacal, thought-provoking, raw, and twisted to be loved by all, but that's also what makes this film stand out. I can see that this film would go straight over some peoples' heads and be labeled as trash. You just have to pay attention and have a "think outside the box" mentality... Just watch the film and you'll understand why I'm so conflicted about this bloody film!!!!
majken-agerbo I have a special place in my heart for this movie. It's a very interesting story and the plot follows a great rate where you keep getting more and more invested in his choices. The characters a beautifully written and you really sense from the beginning that the story is in the characters. Furthermore it's though provoking and has a great ending. It's a little dark and maybe a tiny bit on the nasty side, but it also keeps the mystery going until the very end. Great movie, definitely worth a watch!
krocheav It never fails to amaze just how easily people are seduced into liking foolish works - mostly, simply because they look good! Stylish visuals, sets, effective wardrobe decoration, slick direction, don't always add up to a good movie. Perfume has all these attributes but is built around a mind-numbingly worthless story. Just think about this...a baby is born in an 18th-century street produce market, to a woman working on a fish stall to be exact. She's cutting off fish heads and throwing them onto the ground, then she almost vomits, at the same time she drops a baby (gives birth) onto this putrid floor. There lies the new born on the floor covered in absolute filth, with maggots crawling all around it. She intends to dump it along with the other rubbish but a customer happens to see it – so, she is hung for her crime – good riddance to this pitiful wretch. Now, this babe as it turns out grows up in a work house but seems to have the world's first supersonic nose, capable of picking up the slightest scents many, many, miles away (counties in fact!) - as if that premise alone isn't enough to put you off. He follows a young girl home to smell her but accidentally kills her in the attempt. He dumps the body but is now hooked on the odour of women. He then gets a job in a French perfume shop and sets about killing as many beautiful women as he can find (seems they smell better than 'ordinary' girls). Putting their bodies into huge glass vats filled with flower petals, he siphons off the juices as they decompose (a decomposing body that somehow smells like an irresistible sweet perfume!) Who writes this tosh? His murders escalate sending the town into a chaos of fear - is no woman safe from becoming a mere decomposing scent! Alan Rickman plays a father trying to protect his daughter – he tries to play it straight but looks all the while like he knows this script is on the nose. The murderous schnozzle is finally caught and sentenced to a public death in the town square but, he has a bottle of his best perfume in his coat pocket and with a wave of his handkerchief sends the entire population into a frenzy of copulation - thus turning attention from himself! Next, he douses himself with his irresistible decomposing female scent - which further so enamours the town folk that they eat him alive! This stinker is played for real and to the tune of 60 million Dollars – It's too self consciously serious to be good satire and too straight to work as horror. Who are these fools that will spend huge sums on junk like this? This is somewhat typical of many other international co-productions.The movie made money in Germany (sort of figures) and they wondered if the Americans would understand it. Seems the Americans not only understood but, could smell a rat and stayed away to protect their health. So, the movie fell afoul and languished on the trash heap. Bravo America! Preposterous over-everything simpleton fare masquerading as 'art'. But, managed to fool a few on the way. Critic A.O.Scott of the N.Y.T. (along with a couple of others) at least had the courage to sum it up perfectly. Now to get the stench out of my head.Footnote: Several IMDb reviewers do well with analyzing this but, maybe Mathew-Lolomgwtf (around the bottom of page 2 or so) nails it well enough to save you wasting any of your valuable time.
Amy Vo As much I love the book, I also love this movie. Though it can't transfer 100% from the book but I have to say it's good enough. It has the soul of the book for 90% and their actings are incredible. Totally recommend movie which you want to watch to remember and think, just not watch and forget. 10/10 for me.
