Doomtomylo a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.
InformationRap This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
Humaira Grant It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
Roxie The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;
Michael Davies I watched this movie based on its reviews on IMDb, and i have to say, its the most disappointed I've been in a movie in a long time. How anyone can take this movie seriously is beyond me. The acting is beyond belief bad, its up there with the worse acting I've EVER seen in ANY movie. Come on, who can really take this seriously. It was also so obvious from the beginning that the author was going to be the murderer, doesn't take holmes or dick van dyke to figure this one out. I also found the music very annoying and not fitting with what was actually going on, add to that the dodgy attempts at being artistic with the camera and this really is an awful movie. I wasn't sure if it was a kind of comedy/ thriller at first. The acting is that bad, i didn't know if the viewer was even supposed to be taking this serious, but apparently you are. I love 80s movies, but this one is really dated and really painful viewing. I even found the toxic avenger more realistic. The best part of the movie was getting to see the girls knickers while she was getting chased by the cleverest dog on the planet. I suppose they had to throw that in just to try and keep some people watching.
jadavix "Tenebrae" is one of the best gialli. It's never anything other than trashily entertaining, and it doesn't stuff up the final twists as so many of these movies do. In this case, the final revelation is genuinely surprising, rather than merely confusing, and there are some chilling moments on the way there."Tenebrae" is also quite a bit more violent than most gialli. Sure, they always hint at violence of an absurd level, but actually don't tend to show all that much. "Tenebrae" has a scene, however ridiculous in its execution, that even hardened gorehounds would have to remember - the stump of the hacked off limb spraying blood over the wall, anyone?I guess, since this one was made in the '80s, Argento was allowing the American slasher craze to influence his movies and giving more gratuitousness to the violence, while keeping the sex and nudity. There's an equal helping of both, but more importantly, this giallo gem is entertaining from beginning to end.
trashgang A perfect example of a Giallo with all points that make a Giallo like for example POV of the murder weapon, mostly you see a gloved hand with the murder object. Was it all that good, no it wasn't. For me it was a bit outdated. The effects didn't work all the time. The axe going in someone's head is ridiculous easy done and it shows. Still, some killings are brutal and the most famous is of course the hand being axed. The problem is naturally the overdubbing of the voices done in English to get a worldwide release. Some sentences are so funny which wasn't intended or doesn't make a sense at all. So it's better to watch it in Italian with the subs you want. Above mediocre due some scene's clocking in too long. Still, a classic.Gore 1,5/5 Nudity 1,5/5 Effects 2/5 Story 3/5 Comedy 0/5
moonmonday Argento is one of those directors whose name gets tossed around by a lot of pretentious would-be film scholar types, especially outside of Italy. I'll give him credit, he's a very good director and has a great eye for visual impact. He can also build tension and suspense very well, and he's done some very good work on films like Suspiria and Inferno.However, he is only a middling writer who cannot resolve a story in a fulfilling manner to save his life. Suspiria and Inferno (and the lesser-known Phenomena) work far better because they are able to incorporate supernatural qualities and thus can act to resolve a story when a more grounded approach is impossible.Tenebre, like some of his previous work such as Deep Red, is however set in a world where those supernatural things are not involved. While the build-up of tension works well, it's clear by the end that he had no idea how to actually resolve it in a satisfying manner at all. Because of that, in retrospect the murders -- while stylishly filmed and framed -- seem arbitrary and even boring, and the film doesn't stand up to a second viewing. Sure, it might work in a loose, vague sense (although some scenes are never explained and don't hold up), but it's not something a creator so highly-esteemed should have settled for.It is the film equivalent of a painter working for months on his masterpiece, then as he applies the last stroke, sneezing and abruptly vomiting on the canvas, then saying he meant to do that all along and calling it finished. It's laughable, it's pitiable, and it makes one angry at the frankly ludicrous claim.Tenebre is hampered by a stupid plot and too many characters with too little real definition or development. The tension is built skillfully and the scenes shot skillfully, but that doesn't matter much if the viewer is shutting the film off in anger at wasting nearly two hours. It teases with a promise of a resolution that it does not deliver; the plot does not blow one away, and in fact it's tired and predictable. Most inexcusable is the flagrant misuse of the Conan Doyle quote -- nothing was eliminated that was impossible in the first place! Everything is just situated neatly, and implausibly, in the director's box of toys.Last but not least, no dog is that persistent and the sequence was rendered laughably ridiculous by that and the dog being clearly a trained dog performing stunts and even more clearly not even slightly dangerous or wild. With better direction and editing, as well as a better scene script, it would have made the dog seem actually threatening and scary. This was where the film really started to fail.But there are so many places where the film fails, especially on second viewing. This is a lumpy fumble of a film, and it is a waste of time that won't have you munching popcorn, but instead reaching for the booze to calm your nerves...after being annoyed, not frightened.
