ThiefHott Too much of everything
Hayden Kane There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
Maleeha Vincent It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.
Bob This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
bkoganbing Andrew McCarthy in this film got an opportunity to create and bring to life the girl of his dream. He's got an artist's temperament and has to express himself wherever he works. But sadly he works for employers who value speed and quantity so he can't hold a job. Working in a department store he fashions a Mannequin that is the girl of his dreams. And when he gives her a kiss, Kim Cattrall springs to life, but only for him. Saving the life of department store magnate Estelle Getty gets him a job at her store and he shows genius in creating truly great display windows. But he works at night and it's Cattrall who keeps inspiring McCarthy.Sad to say that there are any number of people who have differing agendas who are looking to put Getty's department store out of business, some of them working for her like James Spader, Carole Davis, Steve Vinovich and Christopher Maher.Part of Mannequin's appeal for me is this incredible cast of supporting players all of whom seem to be trying to top themselves with overacting. The best two are Meshach Taylor as the very flamboyant designer Hollywood who becomes McCarthy's best friend and G.W. Bailey the store security guard who if he wasn't ready for the rubber room trying to catch McCarthy doing something wrong will put him there. Seeing McCarthy in a compromising position with a store Mannequin makes him sure we can get him on a moral's clause.McCarthy and Cattrall through all this scenery chewing are a pair of appealing leads. Mannequin got one Oscar nomination for Best Song for the hit Nothing's Going To Stop Us Now.The film is 30 years old and it is still fresh and appealing as its leads. And very funny indeed.
TheGDfather I grew up loving this movie to be honest with you. I was born in '77 so I would would have been around 10 actually closer to 9 considering my birthday was late in the year. And I didn't really realize how much I liked Kim catrall till I got older. My memory of movie stars wasn't as great at 10 like it is now at 40. I didn't even realize it was here until after sex and the city was almost over and reviewed the movie again recently. I have it Blu ray and I'm looked to find mannequin two which Kristy Swanson is hot as well too.But Kim might have just made this movie what it was. I showed this to my roommate who is 27 so this is before she was born. She has never seen it and all she talks about is the the guys girlfriend and what she is wearing and her hair. I must say that's my favorite part about watching these older movies. Yes 1987 to 1993 had their own look. And shoulder pads for women and their huge hair spray hair (which I'm not sure if she had) was in. Even how they wore their hair was really unusual compared to before an now. The 70's girls hair was model looking and a lot of people wish they could get their hair like Lynda carter or the charlies angels. The whole Melanie g working girl is out.And the plot is honestly horrendous now that I look at it. Great idea but you didn't really sell me on it. The police officer who plays a police officer in every movie was just out of place. He made sense in short circuit, and made sense in police academy but here he was out of place. Then again all mall cops are out of place to be honest. But a mannequin from the past that comes to real life. Interesting but sell me on it do. And the guy black guy in place with mannequins. Not buying that either. Probably what he is most remembered for and technically he was a better actor than that. I saw him in an episode of the heat of the night. Good actor died way too young. Mannequin two was funnier. But you are still stuck in that '87 to '93 time line so keep in mind the attire. Its not exactly top of the line. But Kim's part she was hot. And just like in porky's where you had to put a jock strap in her mouth when she had sex. Heck she turned into a mannequin just to avoid people. She also made you feel like you just wanted to do something fun. A beautiful girl makes you do crazy things...Now that's an original idea...hmm think not. Probably the easiest casting that director did. Her acting was great, her looks great and she gave it a feel to it that the show needed or it would have died. Plus just like your typical 80's, a great movie song. I love the "Nothing going to stop us now" Still play it at bars when I go out. Its a classic. So should you see this movie, yes you should. If anything its great to talk about and Kim's part alone was good enough. Not to insult the other actors, but the director should have including some room for other actors to be themselves. The main character was flat too and so was his girlfriend.
jc-osms I think to like this film you really have to be an apologist for the decade that taste forgot, the 80's. I actually wanted to like this film, I mean I love fantasy films but when I'm pushed to offer the most obvious insult about it, that the actual mannequins in the department store act better than any of the humans, then I guess I'm in a pretty bad way. Might I have thought differently if I was 13 years old at the time of the original release...well no, I hope not. This really is just an awful rom-com feature, trying, I don't know, to capitalise on the success of other films where ordinary guy meets other-worldly girl and finds true love after a series of madcap adventures..."Splash" anyone?I also have to say it, there is something weird about watching Andrew McCarthy's character smooch a blow-up doll and carry it around with him everywhere. His romance with Kim Cattrell's Roxie character, who conveniently time-travels to mid-80's Philadelphia from ancient Egypt and helps him in his job as a window-designer at a big store, takes in various attempts at slapstick, particularly with an over-zealous store detective, his dog and the conniving store executive he reports to.The comedy is non-comedic, the story is paper-thin, the characters even less so. I don't know who I hated most, besides those already mentioned, but there's also the camp black stylist McCarthy pals up with, the big bad department store-owner rival who takes his girl and the little-old-lady heart-of-gold shop owner who takes his part. With an inane soundtrack, forced situations and awful dialogue, I watched this film to the end, just to get to the end. Sorry I just thought it was terrible and nothing's gonna stop that thought.
Desertman84 Mannequin is a cult classic from the 1980's that stars Andrew McCarthy and Kim Cattrall together with Estelle Getty and James Spader. It was a film that tries to revive the romantic comedies of the 1930's and 1940's.In the story,Jonathan Switcher is a department store window-dresser who discovers that one of his mannequins is a woman that was from ancient Egypt as she comes alive only to him and calls her Emmy. She inspires him to become the most expressive window-dresser that the department store has ever had.In the process, romance between them develops. In the end,Jonathan has to save her as the mannequin is going to be destroyed in an incinerator to prove his love for her.Despite of being predictable and clichéd as well as being illogical and has numerous plot holes, the film provided a lot of entertainment to many people during its theatrical release and it still continues to do at present as it has become a one of the most memorable films of the 80's.While the performances are forgettable,it did provide lots of entertainment to its target audience especially teen-age girls and viewers who love romantic comedies.Of course, the Academy Award nominated song by Starship,"Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" has definitely become an imprint attached it.
