Python Hyena Get Rich or Die Trying' (2005): Dir: Jim Sheridan / Cast: Curtis Jackson, Terrence Howard, Joy Bryant, Bill Duke, Viola Davis: Gangster rap flick about conflicting decisions, such as releasing this film to begin with. It stars Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson whose mother is murdered when he was young and his life on the streets led to jail. His girlfriend is pregnant so he realizes that he must turn his life around so he writes rap music in jail. Strong background showcases the dangerous world of drugs and gang life but more about rap music was needed. Structure is predictable with an ending that seems to applaud violence. Director Jim Sheridan receives a fine performance from 50 Cent who recovers from several gun shot wounds before recovering and using rap music as a coping devise. Terrence Howard plays his manager whom he met in jail. Unfortunately the supporting roles are pretty standard issue. Joy Bryant as his girlfriend gives an effort but the role is predictable and straight forward. Viola Davis plays grandma and that is pretty much the extent of her appearance. The film is well made technically and certainly superior to the overrated Eight Mile but the film seems to be just what the title says, and that is scoring coin. Theme is sidelined by its celebrity promotion of 50 Cent and despite a great effort, he needs a role that can take him outside himself. Score: 5 / 10
dinosfearon most of the people who gave this a bad review are probably the same people that gave eminem's film 8 mile a good review. both films depict the life's of the two rappers and in my opinion this film is better because 50 Cent has been through MUCH more in his life than Eminem has. the only difference is that 50 cent is black. People hatred for 50 cent and or maybe gangster rap probably have given them a tainted view on this film. it is not glorifying drug dealing etc like other films such as American gangster with denzil washington or film series such as breaking bad does, it is just merely telling a story of someones life. The fact that most of it is a true story should be enough to help people sit back and learn about the upbringing of one of the biggest stars this century. not a great film but no where near terrible.
richieandsam GET RICH OR DIE Trying'It was alright, but nothing special i'm afraid. The film is about a drug dealer who is trying to make it big as a rapper. It stars 50 Cent as the drug dealer, Marcus. The story was not very gripping. It was OK, but it could have been a lot better. I was told before I saw this that it was a biopic about 50 Cent, but I don't think this is the case. I am sure there are similarities, but i am sure that there are some fictitious moments too.The acting was OK(ish), in fact, i thought 50 Cent is a better actor than a rapper. There was one comedy moment in the movie that made me laugh though... there is a scene where Marcus gets attacked in the shower by a knife wielding criminal and it turns out to be a fight... it is funny watching tough guys slipping and sliding all over the place while trying to kill each other. Haha! Also, i gotta say, there is a scene where Marcus gets shot that is really good. The effects were impressive in that scene and was quite gruesome.I really preferred 8 Mile... that film is a lot better than this. This was just a major disappointment.I will give this film a 5 out of 10.Disappointing movie...For more of my reviews, please like my Facebook page:http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ordinary-Person-Movie- Reviews/456572047728204
avreeves_areeves A lot of undeserved negative reviews from close minded ppl who cant understand the character, plot, or underlying message. it is to be expected with the way most Hollywood crime films are structure and the insane ignorance that comes from a lifetime of those type of films so i don't know y i am surprised. this films offers a gritty, raw, and a very powerful underlying message that u can only understand if u care to look deeper and let the film take u for a ride. 50's character is definiteley based off himself so i think ppl where expecting a lot of emotion and crazyness that goes with most crime dramas, but he is exactly the opposite. keep that in mind when watching the film and if u are able to dig beneath the surface of emotionless scene play then you'll have a better chance of understanding the films structure and see the raw power of the script come to life. Don't listen to negative voters who are used to Hollywood bullshit. im very impressed with this film and 50' s ability to write script, not a bad way to market an album 50, keep it up.
