Thanos Karagioras "Drag Me to Hell" is a horror movie in which we watch a woman who works as a loan officer in a bank and in order to be promoted to the position of assistant manager she has to take tough decisions as her manager told her. She is also in competition for this position with another colleague of hers. After all of these, she takes a tough decision of evicting an old woman from her home. The old woman curses her and after that, she tries to save herself from that curse. While the evil forces reach her and push her to the limit she tries to save her saul from them.I liked this movie because it has a very interesting plot with a few good scenes that will keep you alert. I have to admit that I did not have high expectations from this movie so, I did not expect much from it and I was wrong. The suspense that you are going to have while you are watching this movie it would be at the maximum level. I also think that you aren't going to waste your time watching it. I liked the interpretations of Alison Lohman who played Christine Brown and Dileep Rao who played Rham Jas. The direction which was made by Sam Raimi was very good and also the visual effects which were used in it. To sum up, I believe that "Drag Me to Hell" is an interesting movie to watch, with many good scenes which will keep you alert for the whole duration of it. It has also an interesting plot with some twists which you won't expect. I recommend for everyone to see it because I am sure that you are going to enjoy it very much. Even if you have high expectations from this movie you won't be disappointed by it.
Scott LeBrun Veteran filmmaker Sam Raimi made his much-ballyhooed return to the horror genre with this crazed picture, after years of working on mainstream titles such as "A Simple Plan", "For Love of the Game", and the first three "Spider-Man" feature films. Alison Lohman stars as Christine Brown, loan officer at a bank. She covets a possible promotion a little too much, and her boss (David Paymer) likes people who are able to make tough decisions. Therefore, she denies an extension to the loan to elderly Gypsy Mrs. Ganush (Lorna Raver). This, of course, is a fatal mistake. The old lady becomes livid and curses Christine. Now a demon dubbed the Lamia will be on its way to drag Christine to Hell in three days time. Christine, who suffers one garish episode after another, works every angle she can think of to avoid the inevitable. Many reviews here at IMDb tend to go to one extreme or the other: people either love it or loathe it. There aren't that many middle-of-the-road assessments. That said, this viewer did have some genuine fun with this over the top story and film, although it's not without its flaws. Raimi goes for "GOTCHA!" jump scares a little too often, there's an onslaught of utterly cheesy digital effects, and there are moments that are much more laughable than shocking. It is commendable that Raimi and his cast & crew give the proceedings a lot of energy, and fans of the first two "Evil Dead" features may take *some* delight in the way that Raimi goes for the gross-out so often. He never seems to run out of things to stick in Lohmans' mouth. One unqualified highlight is the grandiose music score by Christopher Young, giving the whole thing an operatic feel. All of this would be rather meaningless if the lead character weren't at least somewhat sympathetic, and Lohman makes Christine an appealing character. Justin Long is similarly engaging as her loving, faithful boyfriend, and the top supporting cast also showcases talents such as Raver (who's memorably creepy and disgusting), Dileep Rao (as a fortune teller), Adriana Barraza (as a medium who'd encountered the Lamia 40 years ago), the always solid Paymer, and Chelcie Ross as Longs' father. Raimis' actor brother Ted can be heard briefly as a doctor making a house call; Octavia Spencer has a small role as a bank employee. This comes complete with a "twist" near the end that isn't too hard to predict.Overall, decent entertainment. It may be silly at times, but at least it isn't boring.Seven out of 10.
shannen-l-c 'Drag Me to Hell' is far and above one of the worst horror movies I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot). I first saw it in the cinema as a teenager but didn't remember much about it so decided to re-watch it. Upon my second viewing I realised why I didn't remember anything about it - there's nothing worth remembering! This movie is hideous from start to finish. The attempts to shock are funny rather than scary (although there are some sites that categorise this as a comedy-horror, so perhaps that's its intention?) and the plot is so over-done and cliche that it's barely worth watching. The lead, Christine, is annoying and impossible to sympathise with. Before it's even half way through I found myself wishing she would die already just to save myself from the pain. This is concerning, since she's actually not a bad person and the curse that's placed upon her is done for a rather stupid reason, in my opinion. I was so bored that I stopped paying attention during parts, but the ending scene really was the cherry on top. The awful CGI really was laughable and just re-affirmed to me how stupid this whole movie was. I have no idea how this has got above a 3 star rating, because even that's generous.
Bryan Kluger Back in 2009, the brilliant filmmaker Sam Raimi journeyed back to his horror roots and made a fun-as-hell horror-comedy film called 'Drag Me To Hell'. For those of you who don't remember who Sam Raimi is, movies like 'Evil Dead II', 'Army of Darkness', 'The Spider-Man Trilogy', and 'Darkman' are some of his accomplishments. Raimi and his brother and frequent collaborator Ivan Raimi had an idea for a horror film called 'The Curse', but when Raimi booked the 'Spider-Man' gig, that film was put on hold for the next decade. After 'Spider-Man 3' was released, Sam and Ivan went quickly back to their idea to work on a low budget horror film again, which turned into 'Drag Me To Hell'. If you've seen the British horror film 'Night of the Demon', you'd see some good similarities between the two, but Sam wanted to make a movie about a pleasant and very nice individual who makes one bad decision out of their very own greed, which comes back to haunt them in a the most horrific way. 'Drag Me To Hell' centers on a young woman named Christine (Alison Lohman), who is a sweet and well-mannered loan officer at a bank. She's kind, funny, and has a good boyfriend she loves (Justin Long). Her boss at the bank is always riding her to make the "hard decisions" in order to keep bank profits up and not allow people who need help with extensions or past payments. Christine doesn't agree with this sentiment, but when an elderly gypsy woman comes in and kindly asks for an extension on her house, Christine does not allow it in order to impress her boss and gain a small promotion. The old gypsy woman, played perfectly by Lorna Raver, curses Christine to hell for eternity. The rules are that Christine is now in possession of a button from the gypsy woman and must pass the button along to someone else within three days or she will be devoured by demons in a fiery hell below forever. Of course, none of this seems believable, but when strange and terrifying things start happening, Christine must try to make things right. The film is rated PG-13, which for a horror movie on Sam Raimi's watch, isn't the way to go, but Raimi wanted to do something different and rely on a psychological horror rather than a ton of gore. Needless to say, Raimi succeeded here on all levels. His ability to show shadows behind doors or evil footsteps lurking is highly suspenseful and works in each scene here. The more potent scares are in your face and downright terrifying, which might leave you nervously laughing at any moment. With the horror genre, Raimi perfectly inputs his comedic genius that rallies behind that of 'The Three Stooges' and some other off-beat dark humor, which is such a delightful and delicious mix of dialogue and gore. The performances are all solid, but the person who stands out is by far Lorna Raver as the old gypsy woman.Raver is a stage actress who is sweet and kind, but in this film, she is ugly, ruthless, and scary-as-hell. It's a great transformation and Raver just jumps into the deep end with her character and never swims back to the edge. At it's core, 'Drag Me To Hell' is a tale of morals and ethics, where you might be a sweet and kind person, but even one slip up and come back to bite you. It's a damn fine message and premise that will make you laugh and hide under the covers with the lights one. This is how you do a horror movie right.
