Zandra The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
NateWatchesCoolMovies Snowbound location. Pitch black comedy. A corpse that's central to the plot. The Big White was obviously influenced by Fargo, the Pulp Fiction of wintry crime comedies, but holds its own fairly well thanks to solid acting and writing. It's nothing new or incredible, but it'll get you your perversely humorous noir fix, and who can say no to Robin Williams, playing a pitiable travel agent who spies a risky way to end his financial problems. Discovering a frozen corpse, he has the brilliant idea to pass it off as his deceased brother and collect the insurance money. A few problems lie ahead: a dogged insurance investigator (Giovanni Ribisi), two moronic hit men (Tim Blake Nelson & W. Earl Brown) and the small detail that his brother isn't actually dead, and comes waltzing back into his life in the form of a rampaging, unstable Woody Harrelson. William's spitfire wife (Holly Hunter) looks on in exasperation as her husband turns their lives into disaster, while everyone is somewhat clueless and misinformed, leading to great amounts of hilarity. Sound chaotic? It is, sort of. It's also kinda laid back and deadpan enough to make the Coen brothers proud. Harrelson and Williams both bring their very different brands of manic, Williams I'm a forlorn desperate sense, and Harrelson just the unhinged wildcard. Alison Lohman is also running about, but it's been so long since I saw it I can't remember exactly who she plays. Fans of Fargo will be tickled, those with a weird sense of humour as well. Fun stuff.
punishmentpark Maybe the premise is all too familiar and a little on the unbelievable side, but I've heard of plenty of cases in which people do much more silly, yet brutal things for all the wrong (or sometimes even right) reasons. The big plus here is that the cast really take things to a higher level; there's plenty of black comedy here, but also sincere themes and characters. The soundtrack has plenty of atmospheric, serene stuff in it, but also the more rugged pop rock by Eels - both work terrifically. The snowy landscapes and the nice cinematography also add to the enjoyment. In the end, though, it's too bad that things get a little too silly again; Paul forgets to take the keys to the car and the gun away from Raymond, Margaret is saved by a wad of Benjamin Franklins (not that she had to die, on the contrary) and Ted Waters' case is all too easily discarded. All in all, a fun and at times heartwarming 'reworking' of 'Fargo' (1996), but a little too flawed story-wise to be anything close to a masterpiece.A good 7 out of 10.
anthonyjlangford It makes you wonder how on earth they gathered the cast for this. I suppose the big budget meant they got paid well, so perhaps the question is, how the hell did they get the money? The script is terrible. The ideas are non too subtle rehashes of other films, too obvious to mention, yet the humor simply isn't there. Even Robin Williams can't save it, nor himself, as he really doesn't have enough to work with. Ribisi is quite good and what ever happened to Alison Lohman? She's not great in this but she's quite likable. There are a couple of semi-decent sight gags, such as the eye popping corpse but its all rather juvenile. Holly Hunter turns in the only decent performance but eventually she becomes annoying as well. Harrelson is completely wasted. Literally. There's a reason most people haven't heard of this film. It's an embarrassment for all involved.
kurciasbezdalas I never was a big fan of Robin Williams films, so I had doubts about watching this one. I was surprised how interesting and sometimes funny this movie was. Though it's a comedy, I liked it not only for humor, it's a very interesting movie, though many things were predictable, it was still somehow interesting to watch. Robin Williams was great, this movie have change my opinion of him. Holly Hunter did great too and I think her performance in this film was much better that in The Piano, though many others probably will disagree with me, but many actresses could handle that role, not many actresses could play a mentally ill woman so well as she did.
