Studying under a disciple of Aleister Crowley, the leader of an upper class group invokes a supernatural force that slowly devours the village of Marienbad and its inhabitants, threatening to spread beyond its geographical limits. The mayor from the town nearby commissions the building of a dam which would flood the valley and therefore submerge the village forever sealing the evil force under water after leader and his followers were incapacitated to be kept from escaping. However, fate ensured the leader's freedom as he remained in the depths when the waters covered Marienbad. Now 40 years later an array of disappearances and deaths in mysterious circumstances are threatening the town next to the reservoir that now covers Marienbad.

Reviews

Solemplex To me, this movie is perfection.
Acensbart Excellent but underrated film
Kien Navarro Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
Kaydan Christian A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
genfu7 Beneath Still Waters is actually pretty enjoyable. If you enjoyed Brian Yuzna's other movies then it is worth seeing. It has gore, nudity, scuba diving and the occult. Many of the other reviews are complaining about the fact it has some rubbish acting at points, cheap production and ridiculous scenes involving the undead or orgies. This is true - it's a Brian Yuzna movie. You'd think they watched Society, captivated by its satire but completely missing the funny side? Sure, Beneath Still Waters is hardly his best work - after all there are no Octostrumpets in this. But on the upside, (unlike Dagon) you can understand what they guy who reveals the backstory is saying. My only real criticism is that the climax of the movie doesn't quite go far enough: they could probably have given more space for mentalism at the end. It's not a bad movie and will give some satisfaction to people who enjoy the glee of it all, but none to those who think needless toplessness and gore is a bad thing.
aimless-46 While nothing to rush out and buy, Brian Yuzna's 2005 film "Beneath Still Waters" is not nearly as bad as the negative comments would indicate. It's a decent premise with quality production design, it puts most of its respectable budget on the screen, Charlotte Salt is very easy to look at, and it features the most effeminate looking warlock in cinema history for some needed (although probably unintentional) comedy relief. The negative reaction mostly comes from an extremely weak ending and a final moronic twist that takes about 10 IQ points off the target audience. But compared to the staggeringly lame low budget garbage going direct to DVD these days "Beneath Still Waters" is a breathe of fresh air.Things set up nicely with an interesting flashback scene to 1965 when a damn project flooded a valley in Spain and submerged the village of Marinbad. The reason for this is slowly revealed during the first half of the film as it is tied to a supernatural force which has caused several recent deaths in the town and appears to be structurally weakening the damn on the eve of the new village's 40th anniversary celebration. The last third of the film is like a bad remake of Jaws 3-D (1983), degenerating into a low budget disaster movie. Just substitute a damn, a lake, an effeminate warlock, and a partying hard group of villagers for the Sea World glass tunnels, the ocean, the mean shark, and a bunch of partying park guests.Salt is the best reason to watch. She has several scenes with her recently deceased grandfather's spirit; which are nicely done and genuinely creepy. The special effects are not overdone and the only genuinely lame character is the village's "Ed Wood" type police captain. The DVD is closed captioned which is getting to be an indicator of technical quality. And the lack of a commentary feature is good sign that the director is grounded in reality. Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.
Vomitron_G Hell no, damn it! Okay, this very well might not be a very good movie. For one thing, the acting certainly is below par. Another thing is that the story-line has a lot of loose ends and the screenplay just rattles. But this really is a typical Yuzna-production, featuring all his well-known ingredients and, to round it up: he knows how to deliver the goods. The special effects are pretty good considering the obvious low budget. There's gore. Gratuitous nudity. An orgy-scene. A little kid gets his face completely torn in half. A cop hacks off is own limbs and enjoys it. And the main villain is creepy and scary, very reminiscent of PHANTASM's The Tall Man. Why the hell should anybody nag about an incoherent story or bad acting if you got all of the above? I for one know what to expect from a Brian Yuzna-movie, and this time he delivers. So maybe, yes, this movie doesn't really deserve 7/10, because, well, it's not as good as THE NUN, to name another Fantastic Factory production. But it still is fun and I'm rating this on an enjoyment level solely. I'd say: if you enjoyed FAUST: LOVE OF THE DAMNED, then you'll probably like BENEATH STILL WATERS too. It's just more of that lovable Yuzna-madness. And if you don't dig it, then you probably didn't like much about his other films either. Or maybe you've just outgrown his stuff. I say it's about time he directed another movie.
DeliciouslyScared The story behind this film is sound: A town is submerged to keep a fiendish demon from taking over the world. Two kids unwittingly release this evil & 40 years later it's ready to rampage over the earth. Unfortunately, the story is thrown off kilter by awful acting and characters you just can't care about. You have the mother/reporter who looks like she's only a couple of years older than her daughter & whose overt indifference to her daughter makes it impossible to care what happens to this character. The character of the daughter is not quite so irksome but ruined by awful acting on the part of actress Charlotte Salt.Mordecai Salas, the demon-type character, is wonderfully creepy but feels slightly like a ripoff of the Reverend Kane character from the Poltergeist trilogy. The creature/makeup effects are excellent - the non-supernatural effects are dreadful. The green screen technology is obvious, painfully so during the diving scenes and the divers appear as large as the roof of a house. Forced perspective can work fine--just look at Lord of the Rings, but it's very sloppy in this film.Watch the trailer and that should suffice.
