Rosie Searle It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
Lela The tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.
MarieGabrielle As I am a psychological writer, I would not presume to explicate the theme...but for anyone who is tired of the same melodrama....this film will provoke thought, and may make you think of your own family situation; Matia Caroll is to be commended for the exquisite photography; it supposedly represents Boston, but I think she filmed this in Newfoundland...all the better, as the scenes are exquisite.Kyra Sedgwick is surprisingly good; I do not watch TV (where she has a new series; )but she certainly has done a great job in this film....Kiefer Sutherland is also understated, as the estranged brother. Stockard Channing also plays a believable bit part, as the art gallery owner. As I have written about similar subjects, I can safely say that you must rent or buy this movie.....families today are estranged, and this movie touches on many subjects: AIDS, estrangement, dysfunction, etc. Please, please buy or rent this movie; it is for anyone who has experienced family problems, and has a heart. It ends with a positive message, and the photography alone is impressive.
Paul Creeden I watched this film last evening on cable after previously shutting it off when the AIDS subplot became apparent. My initial instinct proved valid. I am partial to Kyra Sedgewick, but am usually skeptical about Keifer Sutherland as a leading character in anything. Well, they both were equally bad with this badly written script which is badly edited and badly filmed in lovely St. John, Newfoundland. Gay stereotypes abound. Artistic personalities are also painted with a very broad roller. Ms. Channing bumbles through several scenes, but has little impact. I felt a little ashamed of hating this film so much when I read the final dedication in the credits, but I still begrudged the time I spent watching it. The message of reconciliation seemed hollow, a dysfunctional message from a dysfunctional family.
Rogue-32 Behind the Red Door features two wonderful, nuanced performances from Kiefer and Kyra, who make us believe they are actually brother and sister - a major achievement in itself. The film has a very haunted atmosphere that thickens and deepens as the story progresses; ultimately it's a heart-felt experience, one that rings true in a quiet, subtle way.
Nobelia This Movie is one of the best Dramas I've ever seen, absolutely wonderful. I was crying the whole time. Kiefer gave a brilliant performance as Roy, Kyra as well. Great chemistry between these two..It's a must see! Highly recommended.
