Synopsis

The Affair explores the emotional effects of an extramarital relationship between Noah Solloway and Alison Lockhart after the two meet in the resort town of Montauk in Long Island. Noah is a New York City schoolteacher with one novel published (book entitled A Person who Visits a Place) and he is struggling to write a second book. He is happily married with four children, but resents his dependence on his wealthy father-in-law. Alison is a young waitress trying to piece her life and marriage back together in the wake of the tragic death of her child. The story of the affair is told separately, complete with distinct memory biases, from the male and female perspectives.

Glimmerubro It is not deep, but it is fun to watch. It does have a bit more of an edge to it than other similar films.
sdsande I just saw the first four episodes of season 1 and I will not be watching this show to its entirety. Here's why. This show just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Especially ''the affair '' itself. Why does it even happen? What reason did they both have to cheat on their spouses? Was it worth jeopardising their marriages, families and lives for?! Let me explain. The focus of the series is on two somewhat annoying,self-centered characters,Noah and Alison. Both of them have caring, understanding spouses without any major character flaws. Not abusive or annoying or withholding. Yet these two choose to have an affair with each other for absolutely no reason apart from lust and possibly boredom. Noah jeopardises his entire life just because he feels ''emasculated '' by his over bearing, bully of a father in law and rich, independent wife. Alison who has a husband who is gorgeous, loving and patient despite her being a depressed, dull, unappreciative bore with a bunch of emotional issues still chooses to cheat. The most ridiculous part is the way Noah's point of view constantly shows Alison in skimpy dresses, with a perpetual flirtatious smirk and constantly coming onto him. Alison's point of view is completely different! She's depressed and almost too unbearably boring to be around, leave alone for a bored, emasculated man to find interesting. Who's version are we supposed to believe? The show has multiple sex scenes which I suppose is to be expected from a series entitled ''the affair '' but which are somewhat unnecessary. You find yourself getting irritated at Noah for being so egotistic and at Alison for constantly sporting a mournful expression . You find yourself sympathising with Cole for having to deal with a perpetually sad, pouty Alison while Helen hardly gets any screen time. There was no reason for this affair to happen. Both on the show and the show itself. Come up with something more original and plausible. It's about time Hollywood stopped making shows with attractive characters and a unnecessary sex scenes aplenty and no substance whatsoever expecting their audience to swallow up this drivel.
hosenoggin-17437 I don't understand this show. I have been giving it every chance to win me over, but it has yet to do so in 4 years of episodes. I kind of got it at first as it was a simple story of cheating on his wife while loving her so much to take the jail time for her. But I can't follow it anymore as there is too many characters with huge plot holes and pointless directions off main story.... caused by the long period of time passing more quickly than the story telling has allowed.
Bill Jordan First season was quite interesting, but it's been on a fast downhill slide from there, and I believe with season 4, they've hit the bottom. Too many new characters with perspectives you just don't care about, and scenes bordering on the absurd - A doctor dying of cancer who wants his 40-something girlfriend to have a child he will not raise, a woman who goes into hysterics at the possibility that her child has some form of cancer, a walkabout that finds a woman who came up with some nonsensical game to get her married beau to forget about her, and so on and so on. At this point, we're watching just to see how silly this thing gets. Hopefully this season is the end of it.
mattofalltrades-46459 This story relies on cliches over character development, and is really just an revision of a network soap opera...struggling teacher/writer stereotype with big city versus coastal tourist town yawns, the rich and the not so rich, plenty of sleeping around and whose baby is it anyway boredom...I've given way too much of my time to this just because I enjoyed Marua Tierney in News Radio twenty years ago -- I think I'll drop Showtime and pick up HBO instead...if you decide to start watching this, don't say I didn't warn you
