SnoReptilePlenty Memorable, crazy movie
Kidskycom It's funny watching the elements come together in this complicated scam. On one hand, the set-up isn't quite as complex as it seems, but there's an easy sense of fun in every exchange.
Curapedi I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.
uterje@hotmail.com The first series was ok, a bit beige but ok. The second series on the other hand is so boring and frustrating it makes you want to throw something at the TV. Cathy, with her perpetual beatific smile which was endearing in the first series but just irritating in the second, still lets everyone walk all over her, including her hapless son and his girlfriend, and Michael still can't string more than three words together. Peter Mullan here is a criminal waste of a good actor, but I'm not sure how soon I can stomach him again after this snoozefest. The dialogue bears no resemblance to real life - I have never met a 60-year old woman who is so dull and so much of a door mat as Cathy, or a group of people so utterly oblivious to the dynamics around them. The only saving grace is Cathy's grumpy father-in-law who as a few genuinly funny gags, but apart from that it is just all too bland and annoying. On the whole, I feel like I have been robbed of a couple of hours that I could have spent watching paint dry. If you want a funny sitcom about a dysfunctional group of people, try Two Doors Down (which also has a Cathy-like character, but at least she gets a chance to roar every once in a while). I can't spoilt it for you, because I just can't put myself through the last two episodes. Maybe Cathy and Michael will get it on, maybe not. Who cares.
mikeykelly-60788 This a poignant comedy about reforming relationships following a loss .. it is gentle and unassuming.. and absolutely brilliant.. a real gem ..
stoph-4 I thought this failed on so many fronts. I really wanted to like it, but it's just quite shocking to watch. It's not because I didn't find it funny, that's too subjective and personal, I just thought the execution was poor. I found it really poorly written, bad story structure, badly drawn characters without the tiniest grain of realism, meandering and unrealistic dialogue peppered with the occasional swear words to make it seem edgy. I really don't think the writer has met anyone outside of his passport to success Cambridge footlights bubble. I guess this is what happens when nepotism continually gets people sitcom commissions - Dear BBC, the Footlights produced some talent once, but it looks like they never will again. The directing was poor, the editing was poor with lingering shots and then jarring cuts. The cinematography was very amateurish to look at. Overall I'm just amazed this was deemed BBC quality, but then again that's not saying much nowadays. I just hope that Netflix etc stays well clear of the sort of people at the BBC who let this happen.
moonmaedyn I watched this, after finding it on the recommendations list on this site (i.e. "other people that liked this, also liked THIS"). Not knowing what to expect (but encouraged by the rating), I binged- watched all 6 episodes and found myself genuinely dismayed that it was over!As for some of the characters--well...the actors play their parts so well and it is written SO WELL that I cry every time someone is mean to Kelly (She's just dumb, and doesn't know any better. Last I checked that wasn't a crime, or a reason to be mean to someone), and frankly, the character of her mother, and the way she treated Kelly (who isn't SO dumb that she doesn't realize her mom is a mean snake), just makes me want to four-five her. I guess that's because I've known real people like that. Mean people suck. The fact that Cathy (the Mum) puts up with Kelly's numerous verbal faux pas is really endearing. She seems to understand, and empathizes with her. Just what a Mum ought to do! I know a lot of people that lack the internal "filter," so I guess I'm used to this, too!Anytime something makes the viewer "feel" something (besides disgust!), it's a GOOD thing. Some of the characters are awkward with each other, but I think this would happen in real life, too.I sincerely hope they do a second season. I know that BBC sometimes does these little half-shows like this (Fleabag was another), but I hope there is a chance to develop this into something long term.
