Synopsis

Mr. Selfridge recounts the real life story of the flamboyant and visionary American founder of Selfridge's, London's lavish department store. Set in 1909 London, when women were reveling in a new sense of freedom and modernity, it follows Harry Gordon Selfridge ('Mile a Minute Harry'), a man with a mission to make shopping as thrilling as sex. Pioneering and reckless, with an almost manic energy, Harry created a theater of retail where any topic or trend that was new, exciting, entertaining - or just eccentric - was showcased.

Phonearl Good start, but then it gets ruined
Zlatica One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
Staci Frederick Blistering performances.
Dana An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
kirstengilroy-06403 I love most things about this programme, the clothes, the history and glamour. A lot of very good actors giving great performances, especially Jeremy Piven as Mr Selfridge, it some just stick out like a sore thumb. Particularly the mismatched Agnes Towler and Henri. He is a refined and handsome man and she is a weak whispering girl. With the most irritating voice and mouth!! The actor paying the artist that paints Rose is not convincing either. Why the Tointon Sisters get brought in as the older Selfridge girls as they don't look anything like the younger versions. It's just so weird that everything is practically perfect about this show barring the couple of dud castings. I do actually recommend it!!!
Felonious-Punk Awesomely detailed sets, costumes, story, acting, crowd directing, and overall production. Reminds me of the Jeremy Brett "Sherlock Holmes" series. But this series really finds itself in episode 5, when each of the story-lines finds its groove and the cast and crew really give it their all. Never liked Piven much until this. Frances O'Connor is spell-binding as Mrs. Selfridge!Oh, and it's true to history, at least the basic backbone of the storyline is.
shil0500 I am a 65 year old American male who feel there is something redeeming in most films & shows. Rarely do I want that hour back in my life.I have found the joy of watching BBC films and shows that most Americans will never experience.Mr Selfridge, Jeremy Piven and ensembled cast have recreated a GEM of English history that is incredibly well acted and always leaves you wanting more, more, more. The attention to detail of this period of time is truly awesome & brings world history to a reality and a journey back in time.If you want to be entertained & mesmerized this show is a must see!
ohlabtechguy I started watching this show during the first season. I favor British costume dramas because of their nostalgia, elegance and style. At first, Pivens, as an actor, seemed stiff, monotone and non-human, like a caricature. This season, however, he has much improved. We see many sides to his character, and his acting is quite sufficient. The whole entire cast is excellent. How do they keep finding all these excellent actors??? Ms. Ainsling is a real gem. Her character is a bit modest and at times bumbling, but you can never take your eyes off her. This season's finale pulled out all the stops. All the unexpected twists and turns of plot were carefully designed to moisten even the driest of eyes. So much heart. Such great script writers. Wonderful ensemble cast!!! American TV shows pale in comparison to these British costume dramas that keep coming out of Masterpiece. Hollywood has more money, but they use it for all the wrong things!!!
