Reviews

Acensbart Excellent but underrated film
Stevecorp Don't listen to the negative reviews
Maleeha Vincent It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.
Juana what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
SnoopyStyle It's 1943, 766 days before Hiroshima. Charlie Isaacs with his wife Abby and young son arrive at the secret Los Alamos research base tasked with creating the atomic bomb, the Manhattan Project. Reed Akley is the chief designer under Robert Oppenheimer. He hopes that Charlie has the answer to his problem. Dr. Frank Winter leads a small group on an alternative design. The group includes Helen Prins, Paul Crosley, Glen Babbit, Jim Meeks, Fritz Fedowitz, and Sid Liao. Family life is a struggle in the armed camp. Frank's botanist wife Dr. Liza Winter slowly uncovers the secret while daughter Callie is tired of the camp. Through it all, there is the threat of the Nazi program and spies within the camp. This is a fictionalization of the real Manhattan project. I like the first season with the personal ambitions, scientific intrigue, and rivalry. There are situations that seems wrong but it's still very compelling. The second season starts going down a rocky path. It starts with Frank's Kafkaesque imprisonment. It's surreal with an obvious reveal. It also separates Frank from the rest of the show. Without Frank, the rest of the show sputters. By the time he returns, the show has stalled and struggles to recover. The espionage is intriguing but time and time again, the characters do unlikely actions. The show becomes more and more unreal. The final ending stalks the show. I almost wish for the show to create an alternate world history. It is also limited with a definitive expiry date. Two seasons are enough.
jorek-63808 I enjoyed this, although I did find the lack of historical accuracy irritating at times (the real story is quite exciting too). The characters were interesting however and I can understand why the story line was changed to allow more drama. I am glad too that the women who worked on the project or were there as support also had good parts. It is a real shame a third series was not commissioned - it would have rounded out the story. One thing I really wish I hadn't heard - I cannot think of a single British person who would say "We have no quarrel with the Japs" as one of the characters says after Germany fell (series 2 episode 8). Of course we had a quarrel with them - the Americans were not the only people fighting the Japanese and they were not the only people who suffered terribly at their hands. Change the details of history for the sake of a good story is grand, but continuing myths like this one is hurtful to the veterans of the UK who were fighting in Burma and elsewhere or starving in Japanese death camps.
martinwjordan Buried deep in my Amazon Prime TV I found Manhattan and if it weren't for my morbid fascination with the Cold War I would have passed right over it. Expecting it to be moderately interesting just because of my interest I was blown away to discover that this is a deeply rich and engaging story of the whole Manhattan project taken from a most surprising angle - the effect of the project on the scientists themselves, their families and the army that surrounded them. This is a clever, well written and incredibly engaging take on what could be a very dry topic. I utterly commend the writers of this show for a fantastic and utterly original show and I command you to watch it. If you have Prime, the first series is free. If you don't... find a way to watch it!
no name given I had to quit watching after one episode. I know it's a TV show and all but there is no reason to completely rewrite history and avoid common sense. The writing is so historically off based and bad, it's a train wreck. e.g. there were no ibm computers at los alamos. There were sequencing and sorting machines but no 'computers', geez. No one ever even used the term 'computers' in '44. They might as well have included cell phones and laser beams. The actual history of the bomb is way more interesting than this dribble, not just from a technical or historical view. The actual people and conflicts they went thru puts this story to shame. This is an insult to the country, the period and people who worked on the manhattan project. Bad writer, bad writer, shame on you.update: Out of curiosity and nothing better to do, I watched the rest of the series. Oh thank goodness this show has been cancelled. I never wanted a show to fail more. I'm sure someday I'll be sitting in a bar arguing with some uneducated ignoramus over the history of the bomb because the idiot watched this show. The show production was pretty good; I only have a few nit picky issues, and the acting and cast are top notch but the writing is gd awful. It's not just mediocre plots and dialogue. It's as if some junior high kid read a book about the bomb and then regurgitated it back into this mess. I'm no history nerd but I could write a book about the history goofs and rewrites. I'm surprised nobody has tackled the errors in the goof section but then the task is pretty overwhelming. I don't know what other rewrites of history these idiots are taking on next. I'd suggest getting the material reviewed by someone with some common sense and at least high school education but I don't think it would make any difference. There's a lot of uneducated nits around the world that prefer made up history rather than facts. Unfortunately, it these same people who like to argue over what they don't know.
