Bea Swanson This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
Janis One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
Kayden This is a dark and sometimes deeply uncomfortable drama
IkhwanArif Not quite the caliber of Malcolm In The Middle, Fresh Off The Boat depicts the semi- biographical life of Eddie Huang, growing in Orlando. The show is a good family friendly comedy with Randall Park nailing his bit as a hardworking Taiwanese business and family man Louis Huang trying to make a life for his family. Louis Huang is at the moment, the best representation of the modern father and role model; compassionate, loving, understanding and dedicated. TV always portray fathers as a an incompetent deadbeats. While it is entertaining, it is also outright false, misandric and derogatory. It's a breath of fresh air to see a father figure that is kind, capable and Randall Park, even though he's Korean, really did the character justice. Constance Wu is pretty good too although she is nowhere near as good as Jane Kaczmarek was in Malcolm In The Middle. In fact, this is my main criticism of the show. Being an Asian myself, who grew up in Asia, raised by an Asian mom, I know how the typical Chinese wives and mothers truly are and the character Jessica Huang is neither an accurate nor an entertaining representation of them.Asian moms are noisy, whiny, spoiled, bitchy, controlling, annoying, cruel, demanding and materialistic. Jessica Huang is portrayed as a Mary Sue, and I loathe Mary Sues. She is one dimensional and entirely unbelievable, and it's only the deftness and charm of Wu that saves the character. Kaczmarek role as Lois is MITM is a closer representation of Asian wife and mother than Jessica is, which is why I feel Constance Wu is underused. I suspect she has the range to pull off a real Asian wife and mother, which would have been so much more fun to watch. The rest of the cast is alright. Especially characters Evan and Emery Huang who are typical dutiful Asian sons and even the character Eddie Huang is well represented as the rambunctious oldest son. I have read some reviewers claiming that the show displays the Chinese as subtly racist. What? You only noticed that now?! The Chinese are pretty much the most ethnocentric and xenophobic culture in the world. They discriminate everyone and everything that is different. In fact, to me the jabs that you see in the show towards other races are too subtle, which is appropriate for the family- oriented market. All in all, it's pretty good light comedy that can be enjoyed by the whole family.
ElliesWonder Bring me so many joys and laughs while watching this comedy shows. I can really sympathize with these Huang family by many of their Chinese traditions. Like all the culture shocks, identities losing, and the difficulties to fit in the American society. There are many old traditions are losing since the technology is improving every minute, from hand to machine, from numerous to minimize, changing happens everywhere, something people follow for a long time might just not fit the modern day anymore. Just like what Jessica said on a screen, she likes to make the easy pasta so much instead of the complex Chinese meal. It is so true, nowadays is even easier to order delivered food or buy the pre-cooked food rather than to cook at home. Traditions are being forgotten, and immigrant family makes it even harder to maintain. Although United States's amendments provide us the freedoms and forbade the racism. However, the covert racism and invisible privileges always exist. It is impossible to jump to the unreachable height, but we can little by little to build a ladder to reach higher from the ground. Just like the Huang family, keep working hard, and they will be paid back.I got so many fun from the shows. The character, Jessica Huang is my idol, I love tiger mom.
rcraig-68758 I gave this sitcom every chance. Stuck with it through the 1st year. Even though they had some major character flaws with almost every role. Made some good corrections in season two. Even toned down some of the characters. But when this new episode from season 3 aired on 11/01/16 titled "Citizen Jessica", they blew it. It became a part of the democratic Hillary Clinton machine. It was done in extremely bad taste. To take a developing sitcom and trash it to advance their political views. Shame.I am done with "Stale off the boat". Good luck ABC (anti-American broadcasting Co. Politics can be funny but not the obvious way ABC did it.
Parker Lewis It took a few episodes for FOTB to find its feet but once it did, it can't stop getting better and better. Congratulations to getting a 24 episode order for season 2, given that 22 is usually the max. The one liners are classics and even if you aren't a Chinese viewer, you'll still love the warmth generated. Jessica will do anything to care for her children and it shows despite her sternness. The plot twists (the one with Oscar Chow for instance) are amazing.I think one of the reviewers missed the point when s/he wrote in IMDb:"The situations are often genuinely funny as the Chinese family (although isn't Randall Park Korean?...ah well, all Asians look alike...that seems to be the thinking here?)"Randall is an actor and all actors learn to play roles outside their ethnicity. Jewish actors played Nazis in Hogan's Heroes and we accepted that. Similarly Russell Crowe plays Americans, British actors play Americans, Meryl Streep played a British Prime Minister!!!! Let's not forget Renee Zellweger played Bridget Jones, a British icon!! Also I don't think French performers were in Le Miserables!!!! Ironic!! So I think we need to get over Randall playing a Chinese character. He's an actor, and a fine one at that.
