Kien Navarro Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
kjetilnesnaj Some producers would smell a sitcom, restricting all action to just the Big Brother set with the cast inside unaware of the zombie situation. Dead Set toys briefly with the idea, but abandons it for thrills and spills - inside and outside. If Psycho made you afraid of taking a shower, Dead Set will make you never try to operate a waterway lock again! More 28 Days Later than a chamber drama then, it delivers the goods with glee. With zombies flocking, there is a gentle poke at the Maybe This Place was Important to them Speech from Dawn of the Dead. It is a bit of a breather for writer Charlie Brooker between his more probing works regarding media and technology: The excellent news satire Brass Eye and his current Black Mirror series. It is in a bit of a hurry, but a good watch.
Red_Identity As a huge Big Brother US fan (yes, it's different than BBUK) the concept here intrigued me greatly. After just finding out about it thanks to a recommendation, I gave it a go all at once. I think it could have been shorter than it was, as it's really only a really long zombie flick, but overall it was entertaining and quite hilarious. The ending is as crazy as the best zombie flick, and the characters are each identifiable from each other and you kinda grow to like all of them, even the insane ones. The lead also did a pretty good job guiding us through it all. If I had one complaint it's that I wish it had more to give with its Big Brother format/structure, so I wish it had more to do with it. But overall, well done and a joy to watch.
MrGKB Given the stunning success of "The Walking Dead" over the past several years, someone's really missing a trick not getting a quality Region 1 release into the pipeline. Yes, I've learned there's an all-regions edition out there, but I don't believe it's been distributed widely, and in any case it certainly hasn't been promoted very well. "Dead Set" is a fine, fine little apocalyptic adventure centered on the travails of a reality-TV cast and crew beset by ravenous zombie hordes ala "28 Days Later." Yep, we've got "zoombies" here, but strangely enough, despite being a purist who distinctly favors Romero-style shamblers, I didn't have a problem with that. The acting is solid, especially lead Jaime "Made in Dagenham" Winstone and primary antagonist Andy "Kick-Ass 2" Nyman, the plot and pacing quite good (ignore the ADHD namby-pambies who whine that the set-up is too long), and the production values of a piece, especially for what is essentially low- budget TV. Any zombie fan worthy of the name should enjoy this one, and, yes, I'd love to see a follow-up of some kind. Recommended.
Charles Herold (cherold) A number of reviewers here have described this as satirical, but it's really not. Yes, the premise as written - reality TV show is interrupted by zombie apocalypse - certainly sounds satirical, but once the zombies show up there are only rare occasions where the Big Brother theme comes up.The first half hour of the show is all set up, detailing the pre- destroyed lives of the protagonists. As with most horror movies, this prologue is pretty tedious; almost as tedious as actually watching an episode of Big Brother.Once the zombies show up though, the Big Brother set is just a place for a handful of survivors. The zombies themselves are very scary, fast-running, ravenous creatures who eat not brains but everything. The movie is effectively creepy and scary. The movie can also be pretty annoying. The worst thing is the character of the director. If this show is going to be called satire, the director is probably where the satire lies; he escapes the zombies by doing something so remarkably despicable that he might as well hold a sign over his head that says "bad guy." But satire or not, he is annoying, particularly towards the end, where he is featured in two of the grossest scenes in the series.Dead Set can get very gory, and since I don't like gore, I sometimes had to look away, particularly towards the end. Some of the gore seemed reasonable considering the subject matter, but other times it felt like someone just said, "ooh, wouldn't it be cool to really gross people out?"There are no real surprises in the story, which follows a typical zombie-movie path. The show is considerably less imaginative than the first season of Walking Dead, and the Big Brother premise seems forced and gimmicky. But the series is effective and fast paced, and overall I enjoyed it.
