Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.

This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.

Interesting that so many people are comparing this unfavorably to "Lost". I actually hated "Lost"
well, past the third or fourth episode, anyway, when it started collapsing under its own weight and stopped making any kind of sense at all. "Alcatraz", I liked
I already knew it had been canceled and wouldn't have an ending when I started streaming episodes, like with "Carnivale", but it was good enough that I knew I really wanted to see as much of it as was ever going to exist. Generally the supernatural and/or JJ Abrams isn't my cup of tea, but I thought this show was extremely well done. The cast is top-notch and the premise really grips the viewer. I'm sorry they never got a chance to wrap it up.

It could had been a great series but is full of mistakes, bad sponsor placement and clichés. The errors between scenes are a special case: there are no continuity: keys change case and placement, mobiles change from horizontal to vertical, actors move all around, same car appears over and over in action scenes, etc, etc... The idea is great but it is executed as a "B" series from 80's. My question is simple: today, with so many good professionals, equipment, technology, technique and experience available in the market, how it goes to air with so many mistakes? Ah, Special effects are another joke too.Otherwise it's OK.

What do you get if you mix a mildly interesting concept, a moderate script, banal dialogue, and discount actors? The answer is: Probably just one season. There is a secret underground room - with cells. A government agents - who is not what he seems.A young cop - who has a family connection to events. There is a geek. There is - no reason to keep going on.Probably no worse than watching CSI:mytown - unless you like your stories wrapped up in each episode.

Most of the other reviewers have picked out similar veins of thought, but to add my tuppence I would state that this mini-series had so much potential, perhaps as a film rather than a series, but did not deliver. The main fault was predictability. You knew in each episode that each prisoner would wither get locked up or killed. The way the 'tecs found solutions was laughably fortunate, the lead detective was unlikeable, Sam Neill was badly cast mainly due to it being impossible to believe he could have been old enough to be on Alcatraz, and poor Parminder Nagra was woefully miscast as a doctor (an Indian female doctor, in Alcatraz - and an attractive one at that!).So many obvious story lines, it became painful watching. But a big finale! I was looking forward to it! And it didn't arrive!!!! Doubt there'll be a season 2, and even if there is, I won't be watching.
