tbills2 Kate, all Kate, only Kate, and no beckon(sale)ing reason other than Kate Beckinsale. I'm glad I'm not stuck in a whiteout so I can see pretty Kate visibly clear 'cuz Kate revealing her white underwear out and taking a shower in Whiteout inspires me to shoot my white out. Her character's introduction is outright (White)outstanding! I'm really happy the writers didn't Whiteout that scene 'cuz I do love Kate and Whiteout's very good.
dplante-26699 I had never heard of this movie before I saw it in the video store. But Kate Beckinsale is a good actress and easy on the eyes, and it had Tom Skerritt in it, too (and even when he dials it in, he's pretty good), so on a whim I thought I'd check it out. This turned out to be one of those rare movies that utterly and pleasantly surprised me.Script: OK to pretty good. Acting: Pretty good. Cast: Actually very good. Plot: Very good to great. Action: Better than expected. So, any one of these might mean "meh" for a movie. But in combination, it all worked REALLY well. I think one of the things that really hooked me was that I didn't know "who dun it" until the end - not a twist or surprise ending, but a really good procedural story.Watch with an open mind and you'll enjoy this movie.
KissEnglishPasto ..........................................................from Pasto,Colombia...Via: L.A. CA., CALI, COLOMBIA....and ORLANDO, FL Here's a sure bet: Out of millions of IMDb NF users, only a handful have ever been to Antarctica! A hostile environment provides a great backdrop for an Action/Crime/Drama/Thriller(IMDb genres) such as WHITEOUT. And Antarctica is just about as hostile as it gets! The film does get off to a really GREAT start. While in the theater, my enjoyment was genuine during 80 to 90% of the movie...Just after viewing, 7.5* was my rating...But after a few hours of cerebral ricocheting, I realized that perhaps I'd allowed my emotions a little too much free reign, permitting myself to be a partial victim of WHITEOUT's cinematic snow job!...YES.. "I was Snow-Blinded by the light!" Therefore, my revised rating is 6*! I'll explain: WHITEOUT does have a few top-notch scenes, where director Dominic Sena (Swordfish/GONE in 60 Seconds) really manages to work the "Hostile Environment" angle I mentioned at the beginning to its fullest! However, this very unique initial strength proves eventually to be a tremendous constraint on the overall film. During the first half of WHITEOUT there are several scenes where the safe haven home-base compound is left behind and helicopter trips are taken as part of an ongoing murder investigation. But the all-white outdoors soon gets a little drab and painfully bright on the eyes.During most of the last half of the film, weather conditions force everyone to pretty much stay inside the compound, which also provides rather austere viewer surroundings. This movie suffered from insufficient character development and over-reliance on several action-thriller-slasher scenes, which, although exciting and well-executed, were not enough to sustain WHITEOUT at a solid 8* for its duration! In any case, 6*.....ENJOY/DISFRUTELA! Any comments, questions or observations, in English or Español, are most welcome!
bowmanblue I'm writing this review after watching 'Whiteout' a second time. I saw it a couple of years ago as I'm a reasonable fan of Kate Beckinsale and wondered why I couldn't remember a thing about my initial viewing. Now I've watching it a second time I figured I better write this review before I totally forget it yet again. It's pretty damn forgettable.Beckinsale plays a U.S. Marshall who's stationed in Antarctica and uncovers the continent's first murder. She therefore has to solve it because... well, just because. Like I mentioned earlier, I'm a fan of Kate Beckinsale. However, I just couldn't really buy her as a tough, hardened U.S. Marshall. Her 'cat-like' sleekness worked brilliantly in the 'Underworld' films as she was an immortal vampire, however, now she's human, believing she has lived her life knocking people's heads together and bringing down drugs cartels doesn't really add up.The research station she's based in is filled with men (yes, you see a couple other women, but they don't really come into it). The concentrate on the men because the killer is blatantly a man, so you need to try and work out who. It basically descends into a 'slasher film in snow.' Whereas as similar films (like 'Scream') had interesting suspects who might be the killer, here we have the blandest bunch of guys ever seen on screen. You won't really care who's the killer and who gets killed. You're left with a bland 'slasher' film with a clichéd 'cop with a dark past' thrown in there. The dialogue is bland. The action is bland and you just won't care about anything.I don't know why, but I kept thinking of John Carpenter's classic horror film 'The Thing.' Yes, I know the only real similarity between the two is the snowy setting, but, if you want to watch a 'who-dunnit' in the snow, just watch the one with the alien in. At least it has gross special effects! Yes, most guys will enjoy Beckinsale's opening scene, but, after that's over, it's pretty much downhill all the way.
