InformationRap This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
ljphoenixwatts My husband and I watched this movie at home without reading about it first and without having any idea what to expect. It took us on a nice, refreshing little trip with lots of memorable characters and a great story line, and it left us feeling better, richer, even, for having watched it. I think this is one of the best movies that's come out lately that didn't have a super hero in it. Not that I object to super heroes.. I don't at all. Anyway, this movie is as good as Lady Bird, in my opinion, and it has a lot of Lady Bird's best features. It requires a little bit of thoughtfulness on the viewer's part to be enjoyed - not an extreme amount, just a little. About as much as Lady Bird does. And there's a lot of satisfaction at the end as payout for being a little thoughtful while watching it.Also, like Lady Bird, this is a story about someone moving into young adulthood -- a stressful time anyway - while having to navigate weirder family circumstances than the average person usually seems to have to deal with. It's different from Lady Bird, too, though, in that it's kind of a little mystery story. It's unique enough to watch separately. The crux of the movie is about that relationship between a boy and the men in his family. I think everyone knows that essentially the relationships between boys and men in families are really, honestly, at their cores, exactly the same as the relationships between females in families, but there's some kind of cultural denial about male family relationships. I saw in this movie an honesty about male characters that most movies are not willing to reflect. While it turned out to be no problem at all, the characters in this movie were initially not quite as relatable to me as they were in Lady Bird, and one thing that initially made them less relatable was all the maleness. But this is a story about men that I think women would appreciate seeing, and it's about time. After thirty minutes or so, I was deeply engrossed. The second thing that made it initially hard to relate: this is a story about people with more money than I'll ever have. Once I realized it was necessary for the story line and they weren't going to rub it in my face, all was well.Great movie.
asoapboxopera Writing about writers usually goes well, because they (we?) know each other. But it also tends to reveal the same styles for the same grandiose thoughts, as with Jeff Bridges' character's thoughts and those of the also drunk, and also wise, uncle at the title character's friend's wedding. The writing in this movie is beautiful at times, but when the plot falls flat, it makes the writing feel weaker than it is. However: that is not to say it isn't very enjoyable. It is. It is far more heartwarming than its plot would suggest. And while it seems almost French in nonchalance, intermingling, and malaise, it also is delightfully American in the portrayals of/by Jeff Bridges, the artists, and the simple comedy amid silence. Those are difficult to pull off, and the credit goes to Jeff Bridges and to the writer, Allan Loeb, for bringing it all to fruition. The story may feel a touch coincidental, but the way it reverses (almost literally) towards a happy ending is so inspiring and uplifting and centering that I can easily ignore the disinterest both I and the movie appeared to have for those lesser points in the movie.Thank you!
The Rumpus The good news about The Only Living Boy in New York is that it features an A-list supporting cast who are consistently appealing and engaging. It also features some great cinematography and lovely NYC locations. What it totally lacks is an engaging narrative. The title reeks of "coming of age" but there is no discovery or awakening here. The lead character, a millennial nitwit whose name I do not remember, is mired in post-high school inertia, but there is nothing here to suggest that he's actually struggling with that inertia. Rather, he seems content in his inertia, which leaves the narrative with nowhere to go.But this is largely due to the casting of this Callum fellow. (Sorry, I do not recall his last name and I don't care enough to open a new browser window and look it up.) Once upon a time there was a highly touted you actor named Josh Hartnett, who was incredibly dull, and lifeless, and, well, inert, who has blessedly disappeared from cinema...and this Callum fellow seems to be his clone. He excels at posturing, but to repeat a hackneyed current term - there's no there there. Inert. Boring. The exact opposite of engaging. On top of which his romantic opposite is Kate Beckinsale - undeniably beautiful, but also undeniably cold. There is a reason that the centerpiece of her acting career has been playing (repeatedly) a vampire, and that is the same reason why she does not appeal as a romantic lead. To touch her is to be frozen in ice.Whoops - Callum Turner. I didn't have to Google it. It's printed just on the left of this web page. Callum Turner. Please, pass him by in future castings.Inertia does not cinema make.
Gordon-11 This film tells the story of a young man who could not figure out what to do with his life. One day, he finds out his father has a mistress, and he decides to do some investigations. The story is interesting, as it is not only about the boy and his father. It also tells the story of the mother and the writer. Kate Beckinsale is very charming, and it is easy to see why men fall for her. The bit about the writer is a little cryptic, and I had to re-watch some scenes to understand what really goes on. Overall, this is a sweet little story about a web of love affairs that spans generations.
