Catangro After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.
bbewnylorac This film has so much going for it. It highlights the work of the real Veronica Guerin, who effectively gave her life for a good cause. Cate Blanchett depicted a heroic woman, in far from a saccharine way. For several scenes I kept wanting to shout, "you idiot, why are you doing this"? when she got herself into more trouble. The film isn't afraid to show her being less than perfect when it came to the people who loved her. But I still walked away thinking her an incredible person. In fact the film, in one scene, implies she's a martyr, and I didn't disagree with this view. The film depicts Ireland as far from the affable, gentle green land of cliché. The criminals are highly organised, ruthless, unstoppable thugs. Which was chilling, but it rang true.
Sindre Kaspersen American screenwriter, film producer and director Joel Schumacher's eighteenth feature film which was written by American screenwriter and director Mary Agnes Donoghue and Irish screenwriter Carol Doyle, is inspired by the life of an Irish journalist named Veronica Guerin (1958-1996). It was screened in the Viacom Galas section at the 27th Toronto International Film Festival in 2003, was shot on locations in Ireland and is a USA-UK-Ireland co-production which was produced by American producer Jerry Bruckheimer. It tells the story about Veronica Guerin, a driven reporter for a newspaper in Dublin called the Sunday Independent who in 1994 begins writing about drug-related crimes.Finely and engagingly directed by American filmmaker Joel Schumacher, this finely tuned and somewhat fictionalized story which is narrated mostly from the main character's point of view, draws an involving portrayal of a courageous and compassionate wife and mother who puts her life on the line to take down the drug lords in her city. While notable for it's naturalistic milieu depictions and fine cinematography by Irish cinematographer Brendan Galvin, this character-driven and dramatic homage depicts an empathic study of character and contains a great score by British composer Harry Gregson-Williams.This biographical tale about a woman's sole venture into a world of organized crime which is based on real events and set in Dublin, Ireland during the mid-1990s, is impelled and reinforced by it's cogent narrative structure, substantial character development, various characters, the reverent acting performance by Australian actress Cate Blanchett and the fine supporting acting performance by Irish actor Ciarán Hinds. A commendable, gripping and elegiac drama from the early 2000s which gained, among other awards, the Solidarity Award Joel Schumacher at the 51st San Sebastián International Film Festival in 2003.
TheLittleSongbird I find Joel Schumacher very hit-and-miss, but I have always liked Cate Blanchett and the film's subject really interested me, so I sat down to watch it. And I was really impressed. Veronica Guerin contains one of Schumacher's superior directing jobs, it is efficient without becoming too ham-fisted. Cate Blanchett is outstanding, I'd go as far to say after Elizabeth this is perhaps her second best performance. The support cast, particularly Colin Farrell also give excellent performances. There are no over-saturated colours in sight, instead it is quite gritty but done in a striking way. Veronica Guerin is quite harsh and hard-hitting, however it never fails to be moving and intelligent. Crisp dialogue and a compelling story also help. The ending is one of the better ones I've seen in a while, and Guerin herself is just a remarkable person. There may be the odd scene that drags, but overall Veronica Guerin is fantastic and one of the best of Schumacher and Blanchett's careers. 9/10 Bethany Cox
Paul Moore I just saw the film for the first time last night. The main impression I took from it was how incompetent the local gardai (Irish police) were. It seemed that they had no clue how to progress with the investigation, given the evidence of Capone-like behaviour in Dublin's gangland.Maybe Gerry Bruckenheimer (the film's producer) could show them how. After all, he has enough experience from the CSI detective series he produces.Apart from that, Blanchett's and Hind's performances were great. Paul
