FirstWitch A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.
Freeman This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
torstensonjohn The true definition of Valhalla is hero rising, NORSE for where Nordic gods or heroes go when they die. There in lies the secret to the film. It's about a mute man with extraordinary strength who is a battle scarred hero. The trek to this land where he believes he will be home. The film is shot in a six part sequence that dives the story, however the pace is extremely slow and you will get bored. Very little actual dialogue and the main character never says one single word. The scenery and cinematography is on point and very well received. It's a story of a man/hero who visions the trek home through hell. It's ok but certainly not a jump start film. 5/10
crberme Valhalla Rising is a movie that I would describe as "weird but haunting". At the first half I was thinking that maybe it wasn't a movie that I would enjoy, but I still stayed because I was expecting the overall film to be something great, and it is.The first thing that got me was one-eye. The performance of this main character, the way he expresses without speaking or even move is something difficult to do right, and yet he does. The plot is also very implicit, and forces you to think, to suppose, to seek for a clue to really understand what's going on, and here it's really satisfying because it works so well here.Something that I don't like so much is the special effects. There are few, since this movie takes a kind of minimalistic approach when it comes to frame and movement, but the few that are there are really unrealistic, to the point of almost make you laugh. It compensates with the good things this movie has, but I have the philosophy that if you can't make it right, just don't do it. And that could've been applied here.Something that also got my attention while watching it is that this is a very quiet movie. Few conversations and few background music make this film have it's own vibe. Makes you feel the environment in a way you couldn't it the movie used more noise, a soundtrack or anything of the kind. So, Is this movie for everyone? No. Is this movie awesome? I think so. I encourage you to watch it if you're not sure, you'll probably like it.
aryel2000 I spent much of the 90 minutes wondering how long Mads was in makeup every day to get that eye just right. I slept through 20-30 minutes of mist, soI ran it back just to see if I missed anything. Negative. Notta. Nil.Mads does a great job of not speaking & semi-smirking a lot. He has a great face and cutting edge hairdo.I've seen worse. I really have! I think ...The most entertaining moments of this "experience" were the reviews. Peace out.
jamiekerr-20253 So I'd like to preface this review with a simple message: if you liked the look of this film from those awful trailers, you will almost without doubt hate this film. It is almost nothing about the fights and the blood and guts, although there are some of those scattered throughout this incredible movie. This film is f***ing incredible and if you've watched and enjoyed other Nicholas Winding Refen's films like Drive, then you are almost certain to like this one. However if you're more of an action-loving kind of person and you don't have a strong appreciation for art in films, then I'd give this a wide birth. Because trust me, I love this film - it's easily my favourite - but even for me it dragged on and on and on. The almost 1 and a half hours that it ran for felt more like 5. But I loved it for that, I got such an intense feeling of immersion that I have never experienced with a film before. Everything from the bleak landscapes, to amazing soundtrack, to the acting, to the whole soundscape makes this happen. As many previous reviewers have said, the typical Hollywood idea of a viking is a blond man with a big beard and an axe, who goes off and causes chaos. Here we see something different. Here we see a more true and a more human version of history. A version where the fight for survival is not just fought against people, but against the brutal landscape and their own bodies. Don't get me wrong, this film is not at all grounded in reality; there are many supernatural elements to it indeed, but despite that, it retains a very strange edge to it, one that I cannot put my finger on.I'm struggling to say much more about this film, so I apologise for the abrupt ending of the review, but what I'd like to end it with is that for me, this film easily deserves the 10/10 that I have given it, but given how 'alternative' this movie is, your mileage may very well vary.
