Lucybespro It is a performances centric movie
Plustown A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.
Blake Rivera If you like to be scared, if you like to laugh, and if you like to learn a thing or two at the movies, this absolutely cannot be missed.
Mathilde the Guild Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
Mike B This is enjoyable and energized. Colm Meaney is a bundle of fun, a hoot and essentially lovable– who would have thought that (I'm thinking of his role in Star Trek and there is one joke in the film alluding to this). The film is about his eldest daughter in his large family (I could never count all his kids) getting pregnant. Eventually all the neighbours get wind of this and then the back-stabbing starts in earnest.Sometimes it does get a little like a soap opera. Irish stereo-types abound - children aplenty and drinking. But it's essentially a lot of fun.
damienmuldoon I am quite glad to be given the opportunity to warn unsuspecting movie buffs about this truly dreadful movie. I am a working class Dubliner, and let me tell you this is not a slice of Dublin working class life. Nobody I know behaves like the idiots in "The Snapper". Roddy Doyle is a good writer but his monopoly of the Dublin working class mind is dangerously misleading. This movie glorifies all the very worst misconceptions foreigners might have about the Irish. It wallows in the mire of drunkenness, fumbling sex and unplanned pregnancy; and makes a heroine out of a depressingly stupid and careless young woman. Colm Meaney is one of Ireland's best actors but the sight of him sleepwalking his way through this garbage is sad. There is nothing to redeem the plunge into negative apathy this movie represents.
lord woodburry picture a Simpsons where lisa comes home and announces a blessed event that happened after a drunken liason with an unknown older man in a parking lot and decides to keep the wee "tot" and there you have colm meaney's snapperthe movie did give rise to much controversy over illegitimacy and family values. but even the simpsons teaches american legitimacy is one of the world's most questionable state of affairs. it's hard to be judgemental toward the characters. where they may fail in virtue they win in tenacity and enduraceexcellent performance by colm meany ,,, and indeed a liberal irish father he was in that the erring daughter lived to giver birth
allison99 This movie manages to suck you into the bittersweet, funny family of a young girl who is pregnant but won't tell who the father is. Colm Meany is made for this role; he is totally believable. Tina Kellegher is good as the unwed mother, and Ruth McCabe as the mother is played very tongue-in-cheek. A couple of things puzzled me; when one character gave the "finger" he gave it American version, not the two-fingered "v" of the UK. Also, they referred to the baby as 7 pounds 12 ounces, not kilos. Also, the pregnant girl is hitting the bars a lot and no matter which side of the ocean you're on, you should be aware that drinking isn't cool while pregnant.Altogether, a nice slice of real people's lives.
