pulga_negra This is an excellent terror movie. It is not too deep but deep enough to provoke scares, thoughts and entertaining reactions. Anthony Hopkins stars as an aloof and eccentric exorcist, in Catholic Rome. He is sent a confused student for shadowing, who ends up having to help the exorcist who becomes possessed. It is all better than it sounds, with some great acting, scenery, scares, tension and possessions. This film will appeal more to, and impress, viewers open to this kind of religious thriller but here lies a decent drama with several scary and tense moments.
cinemajesty Movie Review: "The Rite" (2011)Thanks to an engraving performance from Sir Anthony Hopkins as the real-life figure Father Lucas Trevant, fighting inner demonic forces in a dungeon like black-out space set design; yet another movie about exorcism comparing with William Friedkin directed "The Exorcist" (1973), "The Rite" directed by Mikael Hafström, after a fairly entertaining thriller "1408" (2007), manages to come through its 105 Minutes running time (excl. end crawler) without being a bore. In fact the picture has some striking cinematic shots captured by lighting cameraman Ben Davis, underdeveloped, yet story-elevating supporting characters, portrayed by actress Alice Braga and actor Ciarán Hinds, which unfortunately can not trigger the sidekick leading character of Michael Kovak, performed by actor Colin O'Donoghue given a unsatisfactory substitute in a real-life-character role, which want to match actors Anthony Hopkins & Ryan Gosling for second collaboration after the much more thrilling counter-performance-giving picture of "Fracture" (2007) directed by Gregory Hoblit.© 2017 Felix Alexander Dausend (Cinemajesty Entertainments LLC)
Python Hyena The Rite (2011): Dir: Mikael Hafstrom / Cast: Colin O'Donoghue, Anthony Hopkins, Ciaran Hinds, Alice Braga, Rutger Hauer: Conventional spiritual thriller about the formula for confronting evil and Satan's cunning methods to stray that formula. Colin O'Donoghue plays Michael whose father was a mortician and expects him to follow into the Priesthood. After four years at Catholic university he questions his faith until he is witnessed at an accident dealing with a female upon death. He is sent to Father Lucas who introduces him to a pregnant woman whom claims to be possessed. After witnessing the body twitching and spitting up nails he soon comes to realize that he is there for a reason. Director Mikael Hafstrom is given great shots of Rome as well as a creepy cat infested location. O'Donoghue holds the film together with his dealings with his upbringing, to his questioning of his faith, to his witnessing the bizarre. He will be the stronghold with the ultimate exorcism in the end. Anthony Hopkins does well as Lucas who is an experienced exorcist yet faces failure and weakness. Supporting roles are not all that well rounded. Ciaran Hinds as a Priest professor who hardly interesting, and Alice Braga as a reporter and student is basically a potential romantic prop. Rutger Hauer makes an appearance but how great would it have been to have him in scenes with Hopkins? That would be great casting in a hopefully better film. While the film is well made visually it still feels corny at times and it pales in comparison to The Exorcist, which still remains the very best film of this kind ever made. Score: 6 / 10
mickmaxy An excellent and memorable tale. Anthony Hopkins does not disappoint in this gritty recounting of the burden borne by exorcising priests, he displays a battery of personalities all believable in the way that only Hopkins can be comfortable in so many skins. Colin O'Donoghue portrays the hesitant priest well in that he shows the 'prove it then' attitude of youth coupled with determined maturity by a recently experienced epiphany. Musical score was for the most part done very well for the genre where it is barely noticed by being well blended to suit the visual experience. A pity Ciarán Hinds did not play a larger part, but the films purpose was to focus on Teacher, Student and Evil's part in life.
