AnhartLinkin This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.
Gurlyndrobb While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
Hayden Kane There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
James Purcell I say "pretend horror" because in no way is this a horror movie. This is a thriller that has been labeled as a horror movie for whatever reason.-boring from start to finish -not scary at all (I watched it alone, lights out, headphones in, and I get scared easily).Nothing stands out as particularly awful, it's just that everything, every single aspect of this movie from start to finish is boring and uninspired. I keep going on reddit to look up what other people say are the scariest horror movies they've seen, and I find I have to swim through a sea of mediocre movies in order to get to the scary ones. I'll just name some movies I think are scary and interesting so you can get an idea of my tasteEvent Horizen REC 1 and 2 (2 is largely stupid though, it just has some amazing scenes) Last Shift Eden Lake (not horror, just horrific) It Follows The Descent As Above, So Below Unfriended (maybe if I see it again I'll change my mind, but this one got to me) V/H/S first short, called "Amateur Night" (the rest is crap)5 for being truly mediocre.
Chris Smith (RockPortReview) A sleeper hit in 2012, "The Pact" directed by Nicholas McCarthy melds many common horror themes into one thoroughly haunting and creepy movie. Actress Caity Lotz, who looks a lot like Lindsay Lohan but with out the baggage, plays Annie, who comes back home to attend the funeral of her estranged mother only to find the house she grew up in is still hiding secrets. The film opens with Annie's sister, a recovering drug addict, already at the house and Skyping with her daughter. The next day as Annie arrives (on a motorcycle) her sister is nowhere to be found. Thinking she is just on another bender, Annie doesn't put much thought into it. The house itself just has an altogether uneasy feel to it with its over abundance of religious artifacts and of course it's old and creaky doors and floorboards. There are also times when Annie is roaming around in the dark investigating noises. All these scenes feel necessary to build the suspense of the scenes to come and really don't feel forced like many other films do. After her mothers funeral Annie meets up with her cousin, who is looking after her little niece. They end up staying overnight at the house but vanish when Annie comes looking for them in the morning. When Annie suffers a frightening incident of her own at the house she goes to the police and enlists the help of Officer Creek to further investigate. What they find is quite disturbing and tries to offer some explanation as to what's been going on. Annie does some investigating on her own and with some ghostly help unearths some troubling family history. She also gets some help from Stevie a girl she knew from high school, who just happens to be blind, and a medium, and looks extremely pale. Weird I know but just go with it. With the help of some supernatural forces Annie must deal with the very real threat that lives within the houses walls. "The Pact" is well made for its budget, even if we've seen some of this stuff before. The story is well structured and thought out, with some wonderfully creepy characters and tense feeling throughout.
gpailkids It's a low budget horror movie, but not cheesy in the least. There is no cheesy fake blood and gore, no sex crazed teenagers, and no topples bubble headed blond's running from a psycho killer. No cheap thrills here, just a very complex and layered plot with plenty of twist and turns. The movie never once lost my attention nor did I ever get lost in the plot. The movie moved slow enough to build likable characters and to build up suspense, but also wasn't so slow that it lost my interest.I loved watching Annie as she went through the motions of loss and anger and then fear, and then ultimately the courage to discover clues and dig up old family secrets.
gpeltz "The Pact" (2012) was Written and Directed by Nicholas McCarthy, It is a quite and densely woven little ghost story. It is well acted, all around. Spoiler Alerts ahead. The action centers around Annie, played by Caity Lotz, who has returned to her old home in San Pedro, for her Mothers funeral. There are strange going's on at the house, and Annie's relatives start disappearing. Even Investigator Creek, played by Casper Van Dien, is aware that something is not right with the house. With a lot of investigation by Annie, with the help of her mothers ghost, She discovers a much darker secret, that the house concealed, involving a rather nasty serial killer Charles Barlow, aka Judas. played by Mark Steger. The entire tone of the movie is subdued, but when the shock effects hit, they are very effective. The sound design of the film well contributes to the tension and mood that the film develops. The music score by Ronan Landa personal and almost meditative. This movie is not a scare a minute, effects laden juvenile horror film. It slowly develops its case, and allows significant intelligence on the part of the viewer to help fit the pieces together. Some might be turned off by the deliberate pace, too slow for those weened on the, "Paranormal" "Insidious" roller coaster paced horror films. Not I , I found it engrossing and surprisingly adult. and will give it a strong Eight, out of Ten stars. Well done
