parkerrodney All movies need to be reviewed in the context of the era in which they were made. This 40 year old movie is a classic for its time. The story line is excellent. The underwater cinematography outstanding and Jaquline Bisset well, as beautiful and elegant as ever. The movie focuses on treasure hunters tourists who get mixed up with unsavory islanders. The movie chugs along as expected with good prevailing over evil, but most impressive is Robert Shaw's performance which is as good or better than his prevail of Quint in Jaws. A simple straight forward classic with outstanding underwater footage.
pc95 While not a classic or meaningful, I found myself enjoying director Peter Yates project, "The Deep". I'd put the level of entertainment and feel very close to a 70s James Bond movie. Without a doubt, Robert Shaw strikes again. He commands every scene he's in an helps lift the movie out of mediocrity with his presence, energy, and wit. Along for the ride is Actors Nolte, Bissett, and Gossett, who all are satisfactory or even adequate. Not being an experienced diver, I cannot critique the diving scenes properly, however, they were also enjoyable to watch. Lastly, the story was better than average with a shade of mystery. The action sequences were passable. Settings and 70s peek were fun. Recommended.
suckmeoffflemwad Now I read the book simply for the enormous moray nicknamed Percy, but I soon discovered the plot was far more intense, it involved a honeymooning couple in Bermuda, diving off shipwrecks for sunken treasure, fighting against greedy Cuban gangsters and angry tiger sharks, and it was very exciting, very thrilling, the eel though only made at least three appearances, it was dwarfed by the struggles between the human characters themselves, and barely seen. The reason people usually want to view The Deep is because they think it is a monster flick similar to Jaws, involving a gargantuan moray in place of a huge great white, but this is not the case as I learned not to my disappointment but surprise and enjoyment, it is much (excuse the pun) more deep and further than Jaws in certain respects, using a leviathan as only a minor character and not the main focus. But yes after seeing the eel, Percy as he is named, I fell fast asleep and haven't really cared about locating and viewing the movie completely since because I know that the book is good enough for me, and this film is probably pale and poor adaptation, that is all I will say.
kookookeedoo I'm not sure why this film doesn't have a better score, it really is a treat to watch. Granted it is not a "10"- probably more like a "7", but I'm trying to help it's overall score. I think the fact that Peter Benchley wrote it and it revolves around the ocean people are expecting something "Jaws"-esque, which it definitely is not. What it is is a great film about diving for lost treasure and keeping one step ahead of a local drug kingpin (Gossett) who has his own interests in what lies below. Robert Shaw is excellent (as usual), as is the rest of the cast. It saddens me that some people have called it "slow". I think it has a good pace, with a nice amount of action mixed in. It's interesting that this movie was basically "re-made" (more like stolen if you ask me) as "Into the Blue", which was a complete stinker. THAT film was so incredibly slow that not even Jessica Alba's hotness could rescue it.If you like films about diving or lost treasure, you should definitely check it out- but I would recommend this film to anyone who prefers a good storyline to films that are all flash and no substance.
