Voxitype Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
Deanna There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.
O2D I'll never forget the day that I walked into a video store and saw this.I didn't even know it existed and soon found myself explaining who Ronnie Dobbs was to someone who just did not care. Ronnie was a character that appeared in 2 sketches on Mr.Show. Mr. What? Exactly. He is a drunk redneck that is always getting arrested. This movie expands on the character and it's truly hilarious.A TV producer gives Ronnie a show and he goes around the country getting arrested everywhere.Ronnie never runs out of funny things to say or do, I feel like I could watch him every day. David Cross,Bob Odenkirk and Nikki Cox have never disappointed me and this movie is no exception. This is a must see.
Chrysanthepop I'm not familiar with the Ronnie Dobbs skits on 'Mr. Show' but I really enjoyed 'Run Ronnie Run'. It's funny from start to end. In the beginning there's a cartoon which mocks the cine-goers and the movie itself is a spoof of the 'trailor trash culture', reality shows, censorship and stardom in Hollywood. The film is full of cameos and all the actors show excellent comic timing. Dot Lancaster's opening sequence and his reappearance are hilarious. But, the stars of 'Run Ronnie Run' are Bob Odenkirk and David Cross who also co-wrote the screenplay. It is their tremendous comic abilities that make this one a joy to watch. Even though both Ronnie and arguably Terry are dumb, the viewer roots for them no matter what. The offbeat and adult humour might not be considered as everyone's cup of tea but I believe that it's an underrated film. The humour works on multiple levels as satire, slapstick, dark humour and yes, there's something poetic about it too. Go and watch 'Run Ronnie Run'but remember that it isn't real, it's a movie.
zetes This film is based on characters from the mid-to-late '90s HBO sketch comedy show Mr. Show, which starred Bob Odenkirk and David Cross. Mr. Show, which I just rewatched in its entirety in the past couple of weeks, has a reputation as being one of the best sketch comedy shows ever. Personally, I wouldn't rank it anywhere near as high as many others. It was far more hit-and-miss than its fans like to believe. For every great sketch, you'd have to suffer through at least one completely lame sketch. That said, when the show did hit upon something good, it was truly memorable. And the Ronnie Dobbs sketches, of which there were two in the show's 30 episode run, are definitely a couple of the best they did. This movie basically retells the Ronnie Dobbs sketches over 90 minutes. And, as Saturday Night Live has proved again and again, what works in 5 minute segments doesn't stretch out well to 90 minutes. But even most of SNL's movies surpass this one (although not It's Pat!). This movie is incredibly unfunny. The only thing that works – kind of – are a couple of the songs that pop up occasionally. The only other Mr. Show characters that appear in the film are the members of R&B group 3 x 1 – 1, and that little music video they do was one of the few tolerable things in the movie. Jack Black, who appeared in several episodes of Mr. Show, gets a funny little non-sequitur song that's supposed to have been cut from a Mary Poppins-like movie. And the fat kid action sequence was slightly amusing. The only performer who is consistently entertaining is SNL's David Koechner, who, IMO, is one of the most underrated of SNL performers. Other than that, the film is terrible. Even Bob & David have disowned it, so I would suggest that even fans of the show should just ignore its existence.
ellimayhem You Might Like This Movie If.... You think the Dukes of Hazzard is funny. You Might Like This Movie If....You are from the north GA area - there's some good regional humor there that people from other places might not catch or enjoy. (what is presented as downtown Doraville is actually Covington, the same town square where DoH was filmed in part)You Might Like This Movie If.... You think films such as "Orgazmo" and "Cannibal - the Musical" are friggin hilarious. In other words, if you have a really rank, foul sense of humor. Like me.This movie has a definite demographic - if you don't fall into it, you won't like it. If you see the things you always laugh at on the evening news in it, it strangely works. It is indeed a BAD movie - but it is a full barbecue platter with a side of fried okra of a bad movie. However, if you can't sit through the entire abomination at least don't miss the full version of the Jack Black song in the special features. Unless you're - well - easily offended. If you're easily offended you had better skip Run Ronnie Run altogether.
