jlthornb51 Filmed on location in Joshua Tree, California, this exceptional horror film is an intelligent and moving story of surprising power. Skilfully directed and well written, the tension and suspense mounts quickly as federal marshals transport a prisoner across the barren wastes of the Southwestern U.S. With shocking intensity, supernatural forces mysteriously disrupt the journey and leave the group fighting for their very lives. The performances are nothing less than superb, with Lori Petty very effective in her role as a female agent and Lou Diamond Phillips, giving his best performance in years and almost as poignant as his work in the series Longmire. Seldom in this genre are characters developed so richly. What sets this film apart as a horror movie is the touching moments involving Phillips and his father, a man he lost in childhood in the most tragic circumstances but with whom he still has strong connections. The cinematography is also beautifully done as it captures the magnificent vistas and colorful rock formations around which the action unfolds. The thrills are unrelenting and the terror overwhelming throughout, with a shattering climax that will leave audience members emotionally drained. A motion picture that viewers will find terrifying, moving, and deeply satisfying.
GL84 Transporting a dangerous witness through the desert, a federal agent and his team realize the abandoned road they're traveling on is haunted by the ghosts of an accident years ago and must try to get out alive.Overall, this one was better than it really should've been though there's some big problems within this. One of the better elements here is the film's far more action-packed roots that set the story up rather nicely, taking even the fact that this is initially based on a flimsy-but-workable approach of having the transport group serving interference against the hit-men. The opening shoot-out at the diner leads into the whole on-the-run premise that gets them through the rest of the movie makes this one quite interesting and every enjoyable by setting up a plausible situation for the other big action scenes along the way. The encounters with the ghosts along the highway work nicely by getting the gang involved quite well in a couple of enjoyable encounters and also giving this some rather graphic kills here which is nice considering the potential body count at hand. As well, the ghosts look quite nice and creepy here with the gravelly road-marks and dead eyes which really adds to this one with an overall great look added to the other factors in the film. There's still a few issues here with this one which really lowers this, as the biggest one here is the decided lack of time spent on the ghosts themselves. They're involve in just a few scenes here which is mainly due to the inclusion of the storyline about the corrupt cops being so heavily involved in the final half of this one. It really serves no purpose for their involvement since they're the only ones who know the group is out there and what's on the road to begin with, so their placement in the film is way too much for what would happen in real life and really takes a lot of the time up in the film doing this. As well, the films' indecision over whether they're ghosts or zombies is really problematic as they've referred to each yet break rules for both several times. It seems to settle on ghosts, but the ambiguity is a little unsettling and does come off hurting this along with the other flaws.Rated R: Graphic Violence and Graphic Language.
artpf Absolutely horrible.Firstly, Lori Petti -- whoever she is -- is miscast. She has a way too thin force and passive demeanor to play a Federal Marshal. And her black hair cut in a crew cut is freakish. And not is a kewl poppy good way.The plot is idiotic. There's a chain gang that are sort of zombies and sort of spirits and are attracted to blood, but for some unexplained reason cannot walk off the asphalt.Who knows why? Lou Diamond Phillips cannot act his way out of a paper bag. His role consists of delivering ridiculous lines in straight face. The plot makes no sense.I gave this crapola 2 stars because the black guy, Steven Williams was actually able to deliver a good performance.Everyone else in this film stinks.
lastliberal Come on, give me a break. You see Route 666 on the sign and you turn down that road? Nobody, even if they are trying to save time, would get on a road with that name. You are just asking for trouble, and the folks in this ghost story got what they asked for.I like Lou Diamond Phillips, even if he'll always be Ritchie Valens to me. I also like Lori Petty and L.Q. Jones. They both keep popping up in movies and TV shows. In fact, the cast in this film has done a lot of work, so maybe you'll find someone you like.I certainly don't have high expectations when I watch a "B" movie, but I hoped to be entertained. This film did that. Sure, you get the same tired clichés and some people tend to act like jerks (Dale Midkiff), but the ghost aspect was pretty cool, and added to the horrible deaths.Give it a whirl if you have nothing else to watch.
