Teringer An Exercise In Nonsense
BelSports This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
Keeley Coleman The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;
Raymond Sierra The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
hasmikaharonyan I initially watched this movie because of Ian Somerhalder starring in it. I just downloaded it to have seen all his movies and was gladly surprised. The movie IS a successful remake unlike some others, and the cast was great. It wasn't really scary (or maybe I'm just used to scarier things), but it did keep me tense till the end. I have to congratulate the movie makers, especially the director, for the great solutions they have come up with. And it's really good that after all Bell was cast here instead of Dunst, she is much better of an actress and I liked THAT Mattie better next to Dexter. Speaking of, the reason I watched the Pulse was Ian Somerhalder, and I was very glad to see him out of his usual "Look how fun, smart, cool and hot character I am" pose. Hell, that man is good! Not many can so perfectly shift absolutely different personalities we see him play in Pulse, Tournament and Vampire Diaries, and be a completely different person in real life at the same time. Say HE IS GOOD!
p-stepien Josh (Jonathan Tucker), a computer hacker, breaks into a novelty IT facility, which by pure chance has created a computer virus that invokes the dead. By hacking into the joint Josh unwittingly releases the virus into the world and is soon to become one of the first victims, when an undead phantom steals his lifeforce. His university girlfriend Mattie (Kristen Bell) worried about the lack of contact from Josh decides to visit him at home. There however she only finds a lifeless shell of her boyfriend, who after a short chit chat decides to end his decrepit existence. Preferred suicide: hanging. This however is just the beginning, as the end is the end of the world as we know it...Probably said a bit too much in the intro, but truthfully it won't really matter, as the plot is essentially quite absurd. It either catches on to you or it doesn't. In my case I admire the intention, but must wallop the execution. The script doesn't hold up well to the Japanese original and basically takes on the form of the teenage horror flick with an end of the world twist. Also a lot of the scenes seem forced, especially those with computers turning themselves on or running without power.The biggest no-no is the big finale, where our hero (a random guy called Dexter, who comes to Mattie's aide) has a chance to destroy the contagion by installing a special code made by Josh that would destroy the original programming. This initially works, but soon the system starts rebooting. A logical conclusion would be to try to pull the plug before that happens. But Dexter decides to run...Additionally there is almost total lack of character building with stereotypes being given free reign in the pic. Basically we are rushing through the story until we reach a rather subpar conclusion. But well...Not all is bad. There are scenes that work and the special effects are really adequate to the scare in hand. Here and there you find very nice ideas behind the movie, but just not enough of them to push the film into the 'good zone'.
Boba_Fett1138 To me, the Japanese movie "Kairo" was an huge surprise. I was expecting a "Ringu" like Japanese horror movie but instead got a thought provoking, well scripted movie, that was not even really an horror at all. It was an highly original movie with some great themes in it. Like all successful or remotely interesting foreign movies, Hollywood also decided to remake this movie for the more mainstream audiences. It means that they changed quite a lot for this movie, which unfortunately is not for the good of it.I can definitely see how this movie can come across as incredibly confusing and as hard to understand nonsense, if you haven't seen the original movie. The original movie already was an incredibly hard one to follow at times but at least it all in the end made sense. This movie does however too hard its best to make sense, by simplifying lots of stuff in the movie. So what you have now in its core is a difficult main plot, with some simplistic explanations hanging around it. It doesn't make the movie easier but instead more ridicules. It's hard to buy anything in this movie, if you don't understand what the story in its essence is all supposed to be originally about.It was quite surprising to see how much of the story they had changed for this movie. The original movie in essence was all about loneliness, while this movie is simply about ghosts, causing some kind of apocalypse, when they get unleashed through the Internet. No, most of the changes are not for the good of this movie. Suddenly the ghost are murderous evil characters, trying to scare and kill people and even the reason for the red tape in this movie has changed into something quite ridicules and it doesn't even get explained well enough. The title "Pulse" even doesn't make sense anymore.This movie was obviously aiming toward an horror audience, with its creepy atmosphere, scare moments and lots of special effects. The average horror lover however will care very little about this story and are more interest in some good gore and scares, which this movie does simply not have. So it's kind of hard to tell what is the right audience for this movie, which should also be the reason why the movie didn't do too well and it's being rated quite poorly. This movie will get probably watched by mostly horror lovers, who will simply not love this movie.But in all honesty, it just isn't an horrible movie. But again, this might also probably be due to the fact that I already knew what the story was all about and heading toward because I had already seen the original Japanese production. I'm sure if I hadn't watched that one, I would had hated this movie far more, strangely enough because it would had been a far more confusing movie. Now I could understand the story, even when it didn't got told too well. Some of the good ideas of the original are still present in this movie, though they do not get handled too well. It's a simplistic movie, with an hard main story, that doesn't really know how to reach the right kind of audience. I can definitely say you are better of watching the original and then come back and revisit this movie. Changes are you'll probably like it better then.6/10http://bobafett1138.blogspot.com/
fedor8 Avril Lavigne dyes her hair blonde, then watches as her boyfriend opens the gates to internet ghostdom, after which everything turns even more blue than before. The wraiths try their best to be as scary as the ones in "Kairo", the Japanese original, but to no avail. Even Avril doesn't seem quite as scared as she should ought to be.Apparently, the blue-loving undead had been waiting all these millenia for mankind to finally get internet and mobile phones so they can invade us. Why were TVs not good enough? The acting is pretty bad. The low point was one of the movie's numerous amateurs shouting in the blueish-hue streets about WiFis. There is something inherently annoying about a bad actress mentioning WiFis in a mediocre horror film about internet terror.The photography is quite good (I actually love blue movies), but there is no sense in yet another inferior remake of a superior Japanese original. There used to be a time when the Japanese copied just about every aspect of American culture... A role-reversal?
