Ghoulumbe Better than most people think
Rosie Searle It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
Marva It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
Logan By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
classicsoncall I find it ironic with a film directed and produced by Lee Daniels, with Oprah Winfrey on board as executive producer, that some reviewers on this board would consider the film racist. What it says to me is that any treatment of an historical event or a real life situation would be considered racist if the person watching is uncomfortable with it. That's always bugged me, because how are creative artists supposed to get their message across if they can't show the way people are and the ways they strive to better themselves? As for the picture, I was in OMG! mode ten minutes in when Mother Mary (Mo'Nique) began her verbal assault against her daughter Precious (Gabourey Sidibe). That some people actually live in this kind of environment is more than an eye opener for those of us better advantaged. It was incredible that Precious maintained a sense of decency and humility by attempting to make life better for herself considering the enormous odds working against her. From a personal point of view, I don't know how teachers like Ms. Blu Rain (Paula Patton) are able to do what they do, showing the kind of patience and understanding needed to draw abused students out of their shell to foster learning. I don't think it's something I could do, and I have the utmost compassion and regard for those kinds of teachers and social workers who can go to work every day with the prospect of failure never far away. It has to make the positive results achieved somewhat triumphant.I'm glad I watched this picture but I thought there would be more of a resolution to the fate of Precious at the end of the story. Though there was some closure for her in disowning her abusive mother, one can't help but realize that there was no happy ending here for a single mother with two young children and no immediate prospects for improvement except for keeping a positive attitude and desire to succeed. It takes a special kind of person to maintain that drive without succumbing to dire circumstances surrounding them. I would have preferred more of a silver lining ending to the story, but in reality, life doesn't always work like that.
blanchard-adrian I watched the film Precious by Lee Daniels its producer. The setting in Harlem New York with Precious Charice Jones a excellent math student in junior high school who has her mother and grandmother for moral support. Precious is involved in "Each One Teach One" located in hotel Teresa on the 11th floor. She lives with her mother and goes to Louisianna Chicken for a basket and potato salad. She cooks excellent, with pig feet and macaroni and cheese. Precious Charice Jones has two children a girl and boy. She mentions her daughter has down syndrome. She mentioned wanting a light skin boyfriend with good hair and being on the cover of a magazine or in a BET Video. She lives in Harlem New york and goes to school in Harlem New york at 16 yrs. old. in 1987!!!!!
SnoopyStyle It's 1987 Harlem. Sixteen year old overweight Claireece Precious Jones (Gabourey Sidibe) gets pregnant with her 2nd child by her absentee biological father. She lives with her abusive mother Mary (Mo'Nique) who uses every trick to get social assistance. She gets placed in a special class taught by Ms. Rain (Paula Patton) who discovers her illiteracy. Her daughter Mongo has Down Syndrome and lives with her grandmother. She often daydreams to get away from her horrible life. Ms. Weiss (Mariah Carey) is her social worker. There are some dark performances. I would probably like less of the dream sequences and stay with this dark world. The dream world gets too extended and only serves to draw me out of the movie. The performances are powerful and stay within the characters. The visual style keeps this from looking real. Sometimes it feels more like a dream or a nightmare. It's an inner-city fable.
vbost-33243 One of the best comedy movies I've ever seen, hands down! I think one of the greatest and funniest scenes is when Ms. Rain, played by Paula Patton, and Ms. Weiss, played by none other than Mariah Carey, enroll Precious in the exclusive diet club/school for girls. When she gets there she wonders why she keeps gaining weight, not knowing that she is pregnant! LMAO!!!!! Being larger-than-life herself already, she didn't notice her belly growing! All the while, being at a "diet school", she was wondering why she kept gaining weight! LOL! Her mother, Mary, is played by Mo'Nique, who really plays the role to a T. Being her usual witty self, she fills the role with sometimes dry and sometimes "in your face" jokes and verbal sleight-of-hand. Mo'Nique just being Mo'Nique, I guess! I hear they are making a squeal, er, I mean, sequel: Precious 2, Light As A Feather. I can't wait!!!!!!!
