BootDigest Such a frustrating disappointment
ScoobyWell Great visuals, story delivers no surprises
StyleSk8r At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
Aiden Melton The storyline feels a little thin and moth-eaten in parts but this sequel is plenty of fun.
plutus1947 Thank goodness that very few people have to experience the terrible disease of leukaemia, either the person suffering from it or those who love those who suffer from it.SPOILER BEGINS This movie is about a young English lady, Tessa Scott (Dakota Fanning) who is dying of leukaemia and has only a short time to live. Although she does not make a bucket list there are things she wants to do before the fateful day, above all she wishes to find love. She thinks she has found it with Adam (Jeremy Irvine). Adam is a very shy young man whose main priority is caring for his sickly mother after his father died.SPOILER ENDS When we consider the cost of making movies often runs into 100s of millions of dollars it once again proves that excellent movies can be made on a shoestring budget. Now is Good only cost $500.000 to make. This movie was made in England with Dakota Fanning, a Georgia lass, playing the very English Tessa.I have to give her top marks for the way she handled the British accent and had I not known she was an American I would never have known she was not English Now is Good has not won any awards yet and I consider it unlikely that it will but I do feel it is worthy of some. The screenplay by Ol Parker from the novel by Jenny Downham was extremely sensitively written with its fair share of lighter moments which made a very good balance with the inevitable sadness of the movie.Dakota Fanning and Jeremy Irvine played their parts admirably and with true sensitivity. All the other players were more than passable in their performances and the casting was extremely well done.Ol Parker's direction was also extremely thoughtful, sensitive and professional. When a child or young person is facing death from disease, whatever it is, it is obviously terrible for them but it is equally terrible for all those around them, both before they pass on and having to live with the emptiness when their loved one is gone.
dansview Well, I made it about half way through. The cartoon graphics of the opening are very intriguing and unique. The small seaside town is picturesque and the dad has an everyman appeal. But I think you're supposed to be rooting for our young female protagonist and I wasn't. Being ill does not give one the right to be snotty and immoral and cause others pain. She's a Godless bitch. Some girls would not look boyish, even with short hair, but Dakota Fanning does. She also looks super young. That combination makes it squeamishly awkward to think of her in a sexual context, which is what the movie constantly asks you to do.Having said that, I certainly understand that a young woman would want to fall in love and/or experience sex or lovemaking before death.I don't believe that the handsome neighbor boy would fall for her. Why would he? He could have any girl in that town. Her bucket list of crime, drugs, and sex is pretty depressing. The modern secular world has taught her that those are the cool things to experience. That's so nihilistic. Thank you modern Europe, for doing that to your kids.Yes the pointlessness of a young girl getting Leukemia is made ever so clear, but must that necessarily lead to narcissistic nihilism? On the other hand, she was quite nice to her brother, and she looked out for her slutty friend. But in addition to her meanness to her parents and her crimes, the boy next door physically torments a bald man on a bus for absolutely no reason.Well, the fact that there just happens to be a studly boy literally next door and she's never even met him before, and he just happens to fancy her, and he just happens to have a motorcycle that he can ride on the beach is really stacking the deck.I don't know what happens after I clicked out of this, but I can guess. They make love, she makes up with her dad, and she dies. The graphics, the scenery, Fanning's accent, the music, and the natural performances of the dad and brother, make this higher quality than the average teen bucket-list yarn, but it moved too slowly for me, and I didn't like the girl.
SnoopyStyle Tessa Scott (Dakota Fanning) is dying of leukemia. She has a to-do list before dying, one of which is to lose her virginity. Her father (Paddy Considine) is unable to give up even though she has stopped all treatment. Her mother (Olivia Williams) can't deal with her impending death to the point of avoiding her daughter. Her irresponsible friend Zoey (Kaya Scodelario) is a little too eager to party and help her do the list. New neighbor boy Adam (Jeremy Irvine) falls for her but has secrets of his own.Director Ol Parker has written a simple tear jerker. Luckily, it's not going to be such an easy contrite premise. There are a few traditional sad moments. The romance is there. We have the inappropriate friend. The parents can't deal. The only thing isn't there is any big jokes. Dakota Fanning is doing a British accent, and I don't know if she's any good. All I can say is her acting is subdued but it's all there.
iamjunandokensan Alright, where to start.....where to start? personally, I find the title of the film is quite coy, the novel called 'before i die' I think it's more suitable with that, It kinda attracts people to see the film cos it's about a dying person, most people tend to see this kind of film and it eventually turn out good for them and they're satisfied with it. But, the title doesn't really affect anything. I find this movie rather boring or interesting, Dakota Fanning's accent is all over the place but let's be honest, she's good, not all American could pull it off. She's one of the youngest to be ever nominated at SAG Award, she's been described as 'mini Meryl Streep' and has been in this industry since she was 6.This is like another teen drama about dying person, 'My Sister's Keeper' for example, it has pretty much same plot, it's predictable. You make a wish list, fulfill them and then die, everyone knows how it ends. But if I have to choose, I'd probably go for 'My sister's Keeper'. Now Is Good has a very decent performance but it doesn't have anything 'new' or 'fresh' to deliver. Honestly, I don't quite understand why no American distributors want to pick up this film, it could do really well in US I'm sure. You have the good looking 'War Horse' breakout star Jeremy Irvine and Dakota Fanning an American as the lead role, and she's speaking British accent, what else do you want?If you're an emotional person, this is your cup of tea and you'll need tissues standing by cos' it is a weepie film but it's still an entertainment after all. Personally, I love this film, I could totally relate to the characters, amazing performances. It's just ashamed that this film is overlooked, I'm not saying that it's awards-worthy but it is definitely box office worthy. I rate this film 8/10 or positive review.
