Dr. Clayton Forrester figures he can rule the world if he deadens his subjects' brains by making them endure terrible movies. Exploiting his access to nearby satellite-dwellers Mike Nelson and his robot pals, Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo, Forrester makes them watch "This Island Earth", a cheesy 1950s spaceship film. But when Mike and friends make funny comments throughout the movie and others that follow, Forrester's plan looks increasingly flimsy.

Cleveronix A different way of telling a story
Ariella Broughton It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
Mandeep Tyson The acting in this movie is really good.
Zandra The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
classicsoncall I'm a big fan of B grade sci-fi schlock like "This Island Earth" but have never actually seen that film yet, though it's been on my watch list for a while now. So imagine my surprise when this flick offers a two-fer, so to speak, with the Mystery Science Theater folks offering their hilarious send up of that movie. The only trouble is, I had a hard time focusing on the 'real' movie because of all the zany commentary offered by Mike Nelson and his robot cohorts, Servo (Kevin Murphy) and Crow (Trace Beaulieu). I can see how this might not appeal to a lot of movie watchers, but one of the things I enjoyed most about the spoof was the multitude of cultural references made regarding other celebrity figures and situations of the era, like Prince's bedroom, Salvador Dali, Baywatch, Ted Kennedy and the alien's resemblance to Leona Helmsley. The best was the Buddy Ebsen reference, I almost hit the floor with that one. The thing is, the movie is kind of hard to rate using IMDb's system because it's difficult to separate "This Island Earth" from the general mayhem afforded by Mike and his crew. If I were grading the original sci-fi classic itself, I'd probably go a '3' or a '4', while the added commentary makes it all the funnier, bringing my evaluation up to a '6'. So in the interest of averaging things out, I'll call it a '5' and leave it at that. With the understanding that I'll seek out "This Island Earth" to stand on it's own merits at some point down the road. I'll be ready to come up with my own one-liners by then.
PlanetBloopy An extremely poor introduction to Mystery Science Theater 3000 that I only lasted part way through when I was younger. It put me off checking the show out any further until recently. I don't know why it was passed off as a movie when it's just another episode of the show. As a TV show, MST3K is a cute way to watch silly old movies, and it's not so bad if the episodes are hit-and-miss.But to actually rate this as a movie in itself... it's basically equivalent to having a few friends come over, sit on your couch and make a bunch of dumb toilet jokes, 5% of which you find funny. I have more tolerance as an adult and I'm able to sit through and enjoy a movie despite unfunny interruptions. This Island Earth was a groundbreaking and spectacular film in its day, and MST3K didn't rise to the occasion for their 'Movie' at all. The laughs are simply too few and too far between. They've done better, so perhaps they just needed to spend more time on this one.
piratesticktracy This is my favorite movie. It's hard to explain to people that this was a movie since every episode that used to play on their show was a movie, but this one has a slightly better graphics for all the scenes on the Satellite of Love. No matter how many times I watch it, I laugh as hard as I did the first time. I can always count on this one to lighten my mood no matter how crappy a day I had. The movie itself is a classic that my father said he used to enjoy back in the day. As with most MST3K movies, it's never really the actual movie itself that you watch it for. If that was the case, you'd miss out on some of the gems that they've put out. If you enjoy these movies, I recommend checking out Rifftrax. It's the same guys doing pretty much the same thing (minus the puppets) and some are in theaters for fans to watch these brilliant minds on the big screen as they do what they do better than anyone else.
Green_Saturn It doesn't matter that this movie is based off a successful T.V. show. It still is painful to watch. After a confusing and messy opening monologue by some creepy professor, for whatever reason the audience discovers that this movie takes place in space. And the spaceship our "heroes" are in looks suspiciously like male genitalia. I never quite understood whether that was intentional or not.The only thing sadder than the plot of this movie is the robots. Seriously, its like whoever designed them died half way through the process. I don't know if they're from the T.V. show or something (NO, I have never seen the show), but they are just utterly awful. One is something that I think resembles a crow, and the other is just a talking gumball machine. It creeped me out. What was the point of even having the robots, or the random guy who is friends with them? (By the way, was Trace Beaulieu blackmailed into playing Mike Nelson?) The comments made about the movie these characters are watching are juvenile and distracting. At one point, one of the robots makes a sound like a car engine when a car pans on screen. Where is the humor? What am I not getting?Halfway through the movie (that the characters are watching), the filmmakers decided to spare the audience by having the film reel break. While we wait for the creepy scientist guy to fix this, our useless heroes break the Hubble telescope. This is, in fact, their biggest accomplishment of the entire movie. The movie the creepy scientist makes them watch isn't that bad. It's actually pretty interesting, if a little cheesy. You'd think if the whole point of the movie was to make fun of another movie, whoever made this would've at least picked a bad movie to make fun of.The worst part is the ending. Usually, in the last ten minutes of a movie, loose ends are tied up. Nope. Not in this. Nothing happens. One star, because at least this movie was SHORT.
