AshUnow This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
BelSports This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
emalga Good plot, good cast, good location. I was expecting more character development throughout the movie, which ended like a Wes Craven's classic: bloody.
petra_ste Much like director Barbet Schroeder's previous work Desperate Measures, Murder by Numbers features compelling villains and uneven writing. Two high school students (Ryan Gosling and Michael Pitt) commit a murder to push their poorly digested Nietzsche beyond mere parlour games; a troubled detective (Sandra Bullock) investigates them. It's basically a Dostoevsky-lite thriller/character study, and an obvious homage to Alfred Hitchcock's Rope, homosexual subtext included. What elevates it above mediocrity are the stellar performances by Gosling and Pitt as the young sociopaths, the former as a slick, aggressive manipulator, the latter as a smug intellectual. Far more conventional is Bullock's cynical cop.Worth one viewing.6/10
bowmanblue 'Murder by Numbers' is a pretty run-of-the-mill sort of thriller: two spoilt, rich teenagers decide to commit a murder and see if they're smarter than the cops. Unfortunately for them, the 'cops' are Sandra Bullock and Ben Chaplin - and these two just won't let go.So it's a cat and mouse sort of game between the two pairs. Like I say, it doesn't sound like anything that special... and it's not. However, the film is raised above average by the stars. Sandra Bullock acts out of her 'kookie-comedy' kind of comfort zone. You may expect her to fall over or hit her head on a frying pan, but she never does - she plays it straight all the way through. Plus the two kids are kind of creepy and you will be rooting for Sandra and Ben to bring them to justice. And that's about it. If you like either Sandra Bullock or a better-than-average cops hunting killers kind of film, you should like this - at least enough to give you a couple of hours entertainment.http://thewrongtreemoviereviews.blogspot.co.uk/
OllieSuave-007 Murder by Numbers is a mesmerizing crime thriller about detective Cassie Mayweather (Sandra Bullock) and new partner Sam Kennedy (Ben Chaplin) are pitted against two malevolent high school students (Ryan Gosling and Michael Pitt), who execute a perfect murder. This movie cuts to the chase with story elements that grab your attention at certain times with its riveting acting, from Gosling playing mind games with Bullock to the detectives attempting to outwit the two crooked geniuses to solve the case. It's a murder-mystery movie with plenty of twists and turns, but has a plot which can wear you out a bit as I've found it to be a little slow at times as it dwells on unnecessary characters' past and drama a lot and has limited action. It's not great, it's not bad, but an average crime thriller.Grade C+
