Ceticultsot Beautiful, moving film.
Murphy Howard I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
Kien Navarro Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
Zlatica One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
mirek Zieg If you like Labyrinth and Alice in Wonderland you will like Mirrormask. For me is very surprising that the some ideas is possible to show in very different way and by my opinion in many ways better way. So it is kind of next step somewhere. And I love the art way how is in movie represented this magi world.
Leofwine_draca MIRRORMASK looks exactly like the kind of arty, pretentious little fantasy film that an A-level art student with a budget would produce. Despite the presence of such creative artists as Neil Gaiman, this comes across as a desperately low budget little film which has all of its imagination and creative energy put into the visuals rather than the plot, which leads to a narrative that wanders and meanders all over the place. When it comes to film-making, the writing is the most important thing in a movie (the only exception are action films, where the fight choreography is equally important). Sadly, it's the weakest thing about this. I liked the parallels in the story between the dream world and the real world, but they're never really explored to their maximum potential and there's just too much wandering around the make-believe locations. Before long it quickly becomes apparent that the whole film merely consists of a few actors wandering around in a single room with the animated backgrounds put in afterwards. The jerky, line-drawn animation isn't all that great if I'm honest, and I was never convinced of the 'reality' of that other world for a second. The cast isn't much to write home about either, with Gina McKee probably doing the best job in a dual role. And it doesn't help that the characters are even more one-dimensional than the dream world setting. I really wanted to like MIRRORMASK, but the truth is I couldn't no matter how hard I tried.
Anna N. I just came across this movie not that long ago. Well to be more precise I just seen this movie not long ago. I had seen it on a shelf before and had wanted to see it but kept forgetting to look it up.I now own it and it's one of my favorite movies. I absolutely love the visuals, the characters, and just really everything about this movie. Also like how it keeps me guessing in a good way. Not many people seem to know about this movie and most of the ones that do only have good things to say about it. One things for sure, I'm glad I'm one of the ones that has seen it. Even though it's in the kids movie section I'm not sure if that's where I would put it. I think it mostly has to do with being represented by the Jim Henson company but I can't be sure.I know this movie isn't for all people but Id definitely recommend it. I'll go on a limb and call it a family movie. Although some images might scare little ones. Most do call it a family movie though and with it being in the kids section who am I to disagree.
RashadInOz Here's the thing: I prefer my surrealism to fall out of a book. I'd argue that my brain finds more imagery floating out of Hesse or Barth sentences than it ever will with the extended Cirque du Soleil video-clips in this film. OK, I'm being harsh. The fantasy sequences are stunning, beautifully rendered, exquisite. In spite of the soundtrack. BUT...you know, nothing looks different on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th....(repeat)...viewings. The floating giants still float exactly the same. C'mon...try the book thing if you want imagery, let your mind go. Every viewing guaranteed to be different. I promise. So then.....what's the point here, exactly? It started off with a really nice premise: an intelligent looking girl, teenage angst, a sick mother, a circus..whoa! great ingredients!...then it was taken over by aforementioned interminable surrealist sequence. Rework suggestion: 1) Pull out the middle bit - all 90% of it. Speed it up about 100 times. Sell it to Sony-BMG as a video-clip for their next big thing. 2) Get a real storyteller. I'd love to know what happened to that charismatic girl and her family. My 5/10 = 10/10 for visuals, 0/10 for everything else.
