SnoReptilePlenty Memorable, crazy movie
Acensbart Excellent but underrated film
Glimmerubro It is not deep, but it is fun to watch. It does have a bit more of an edge to it than other similar films.
Kamila Bell This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
adonis98-743-186503 MacGruber feels like a SNL Parody packed with bad action and comedy but also with a good cast going completely wasted into the hands of a bad script that surrounds them and their characters and makes for a disappointing film. Plus the cameos from the WWE wrestlers and their roles that go wasted makes it even worse. (0/10)
Python Hyena MacGruber (2010): Dir: Jorma Taccone / Cast: Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe, Val Kilmer, Powers Booth: Based on the Saturday Night Live skit here is a funny parody of the TV show MacGyver, but unlike his skill, MacGruber often makes things worse. Plot regards a terrorist threat by an enemy responsible for the murder of MacGruber's bride to be. Director Jorma Taccone is backed by a fine cast that succeed but the best aspect is its close examination of its target and how the hero is the mirror opposite to the inspiration. Will Forte as MacGruber is clearly motivated by revenge, which he eventually lands, but his tactics and how they negatively effect others often work. One of the funniest jokes regards a team that he assembles. The team are all recognizable faces from a certain entertainment field and they all suffer from MacGruber's absence of mind. Kristen Wiig steals moments as his love interest who wants to be a singer. Her funniest moment arrives during a coffee shop scene where she follows MacGruber's instructions too closely. Ryan Phillippe has a predictable yet effective role as a rookie soldier whom MacGruber doesn't hit it off with. Val Kilmer plays the villain to a tee who has a nasty past with MacGruber. His defeat is not quite as satisfying as perhaps it could be. Powers Booth plays one of those officer types who gets mad at MacGruber at every opportunity for messing everything up. It is well made from a technical standpoint but some of its moral narrative dilemmas are over the top. As a parody of MacGyver it succeeds. As art it does not. Score: 7 / 10
SnoopyStyle MacGruber (Will Forte) lost his bride Casey (Maya Rudolph) when Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer) blew up their wedding. Colonel Faith (Powers Boothe) convinces MacGruber to return after Von Cunth stole a nuke. Lt. Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe) is assigned to work with MacGruber. After blowing up his own men, MacGruber recruits his friend Vicki St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig).I wasn't a big fan of the SNL skit. It always seemed very repetitive. When the skit is stretched out, I also noticed how annoying and unlikeable MacGruber is. Sometimes, he gets so stupid that it does turn funny. Ryan Phillippe adds very little humor. Kristen Wiig is actually quite funny especially as the decoy. MacGruber is so bad at his job that this may work better in a 'Spies Like Us' plot. This is not nearly funny enough.
heftymartin I'm not normally for movies that attempt to be funny by being toe-curlingly embarrassing, but for some reason it truly works here. The jokes are high-school level but somehow it's like the humor has evolved. Maybe if I, in some weird dimension, was still in high school at age 38... this would be what my mind was up to. Environmentally forced to be at the lowest level of funny, but mature enough to take it many steps further than any high-school kid could. If that makes sense to you, watch this. Oh my god it's so stupidly funny. The actor's lines are hilarious, and the comedic timing works. Think of the dumbest possible answer to any question, and this movie has thought of an even dumber one. That' what I mean when I say "being this stupid requires intelligence".
