Reviews

Diagonaldi Very well executed
Stevecorp Don't listen to the negative reviews
Glucedee It's hard to see any effort in the film. There's no comedy to speak of, no real drama and, worst of all.
Candida It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
dishon-94970 Could have been so much better if it wasn't for the bad acting and cutting away from gruesome scenes. It's supposed to be a horror movie. The box didn't only ruin the main characters life. It helped ruin the movie.
timtidball It's always a surprise to me that movies like this get made, let alone, get the funding. If you want a sometimes amusing, poor man's Final Destination, then garb some popcorn and have a seat. Keep your expectations low though.
lojitsu Here's The Lowedown on "Wish Upon" (PG-13 - 2017 - US)...You dig on multiverse?Genre: Horror/Paranormal My Score: 5.8Cast=7 Acting=6 Plot=8 Ending=7 Story=4 Scare=4 Jump=3 F/X=7 Creep=7 Twist=5A teen girl discovers a magical box that will grant her seven wishes. As she uses her wishes for personal gain, bad things begin to happen to those around her."When the music ends, the blood price is paid." If you see this, one thing will pop into your mind..."Final Destination". I was anticipating the death scenes and they were pretty good...if only they had a little more imagination. This is one of those films that really needed to be rated R to make it a lot scarier. Throw in something out of "The Craft" and you have a movie with very little originality. It's not a bad watch...I just can't give it much more than a meh.
lavatch In the special features portion of the DVD of "Wish Upon," the director and cast were having great fun in recounting the narrative of their film. The actress Joey King, who plays the main character Clare, gives the audience an "attic tour" of the horrific starting point of Clare's story where, as a child, she discovered the dead body of her mother, who hung herself. So, what is so funny about "Wish Upon"? While the expression "supernatural horror film" has been used to describe the "Wish Upon," a better term is "dark comedy." Young Clare comes across a magic box known as a Chinese wish pot, which grants her seven wishes. The box is evidently controlled by a demented force known as the Yaoguai. But it soon becomes apparent to the audience (Clare is very slow to catch on) that there is a "blood price" to pay for each wish. The theme of unintended consequences occurs when the most beloved people in Clare's life are on the receiving end of violent deaths as payback to the wish pot. The litany of deaths begin with Clare's poor dog Max, then become progressively more ghoulish with each victim. The term "multiverse" is used in the film to denote the diabolical thinking of the magic box that clearly has a minds of its own in conceiving the unexpected termination of Clare's friends and family members following her "wishes." The wish pot even flips its lid and plays ominous music portending the next fatality. The filmmakers attempt to ground the magic box in history that is supposed to send chills up and down the viewers' spines. A fictional character named Lu Mei had evidently first come into possession with the wish pot early in the twentieth century, leading Lu to become a survivor of the plague. Later, Arthur Sands, an airman in the United States armed forces, comes across the box and eventually takes his own life after succumbing to the addictive powers of wish fulfillment. Sands lived in Clare's neighborhood, where apparently Clare's mother came across the indestructible wish pot. By leaving it in the trash, she afforded her husband to later come across it when the distraught man was reduced to working as a scavenger following his wife's suicide. In the bonus track of the DVD, the director John R. Leonetti stressed how the wish pot was "relentless" in its pursuit of karma for all of whose who dare to wish upon this magical device. In this case, however, the wish pot came back to bite the filmmakers who just wanted to have a good time. While there some creative touches, there were too many scenes that were so unpleasant that the audience never had the same amount of fun as the cast and crew.
