Kirpianuscus a good film. but not adaptation of the novel of Garcia Marquez. and the cause it is not exactly the lost of magical realism aura but the option for a slice of soap opera. it is the film of Javier Bardem and Giovanna Mezzogiornno but the desire to give only a dramatic love story in the clothes of XIX century is not the most inspired. it represents only a big mistake. because the story becomes too subjective and, in many scenes, almost childish. because Javie Bardem has the bad luck to must be the shadow/sketch of Florentino Ariza. because the events are almost pieces of broken statue - too many, without precise place, result of improvement. so, maybe, a beautiful film. for costumes, atmosphere and romanticism with taste of cinnamon. but , unfortunately, to far by the novel.and this does a precious virtue - the cast -, becoming a sin. because it is a waste of energy to not use great actors to resurrect the essence of a real seductive novel.
setessmer-229-698849 This was such a poorly done film. Having read (and loved) the book, watching this was torture for me. I felt like it had the potential to be a great film, but the majority of the acting was just mediocre. The rhythm of the film just did not work. The script was poorly done. None of the soul of the book was in this film. A couple of the actors' talent was evident. I got the Impression that Javier Bardem was possibly the only cast member who unterstood his character and the story (perhaps he read the book?). Aside from a couple of exceptions, the rest were not at their best in this film. I'll stop now before I write a thousand word rant.Just, disappointing.
Desertman84 Based on the novel of the same name by Gabriel García Márquez, Love in the Time of Cholera tells the story of a love triangle between Fermina Daza, played by Italian actress Giovanna Mezzogiorno; and her two suitors, Florentino Ariza, played by Spanish actor Javier Bardem, and Doctor Juvenal Urbino, portrayed by Benjamin Bratt. The screenplay by Ronald Harwood spans 50 years, from 1880 to 1930.Angie Cepeda,Catalina Sandino Moreno,Hector Elizondo,Liev Schreiber,Fernanda Montenegro,Laura Harring and John Leguizamo play supporting roles in this movie directed by Mike Newell. In late 19th century Cartagena, a river port in Colombia, Florentino Ariza falls in love at first sight with Fermina Daza. They secretly correspond and she eventually agrees to marry but her father discovers their relationship and sends her to distant relatives. When she returns some years later, Fermina agrees to marry Dr. Juvenal Urbino, her father's choice. Their fifty year marriage is outwardly loving, but inwardly marred by darker emotions. Fermina's marriage devastates Florentino, who vows to remain a virgin, but his self-denial is thwarted by a tryst. To help him get over Fermina, his mother throws a willing widow into his bed and he discovers that sex is a very good pain reliever which he replaces with the opium that he had habitually smoked. He begins to record and describe each of his sexual encounters, beginning with the widow, and eventually compiling over 600 entries. A lowly clerk, he plods resolutely over many years to approach the wealth and social standing of Dr. Urbino. When the now-elderly doctor dies suddenly, Florentino immediately and impertinently renews courting Fermina.Though Cartagena in the late 19th Century is beautifully evoked in this visually sumptuous film, there's something missing at the core of this love story. It lacks magic as the cast fails to connect with the viewers emotion inspite of the good story being told. But overall,it still has the capacity to entertain despite its many flaws and negative things about it.
cohuttablue-imdb This is a strangely interesting film, rich-textured and unpredictable ~ more of an art film than a mainstream one. It is dramatic and well-acted. It is at times somewhat disorganized and mystifying. The direction and/or editing could be smoother. The female lead is somewhat young for this role. It would have been well to use an older character made-up to look younger in the earlier scenes ~ or to have used a different actress for the two eras. Certainly the reference to cholera in the title leads one to think that illness, death, and separation would be a major theme, but it is more of a peripheral theme in this story. In some ways it was lacking, with some scenes and themes seeming disconnected; but I would watch it again (and need to, in fact, to clear up some odd points). Worth watching.
