PodBill Just what I expected
Invaderbank The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.
Billy Ollie Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
TheVAFan "There can only be one." muttered Christopher Lambert, ready to knock Sean Connery into eight million pieces. And quite frankly as many people can agree, there should have only been one.But unfortunately Hollywood always sees dollar signs in it's eyes and so that's why it's been running around like some cheapo Hanna-Barbera knock off and throwing all these so called "sequels" to the cult classic in our silly little faces. Many people run up to the hills and shout the second is the worst one of all. Others walk to the forest and laugh at the sheer cheapness of Endgame. And a few others choke up when The Final Dimension is mentioned. (Hey that rhymes but you won't give a crap.) But this miserable, this really really shoddy and miserable excuse for a sequel also cuts the mustard. In fact it doesn't just cut the mustard, it causes the mustard to explode onto the floor, making a gigantic mess of everything. That also explains the film's plot. It is quite frankly a gigantic mess, it honestly feels like the writers were running all over the place to find the most silliest plot devices as possible. Here's the deal matey, Duncan and a bunch of other no-ones must find something called "The Source." What is it? Well I don't have a bladdy clue because no one can be bothered to go into any detail on what it is and what it does.I hope you have a ton of beer and a couple of friends at the ready because this would surely make a fun drinking game. You all could take a drink and laugh out loud at all the childish Channel 5 level dialogue that the actors churn out of their mouths. Also I'm sure there must have been some decent effects somewhere... because at this point I can't find them at all. Just some incredible amount of dodgyness. Dodgy CG, dodgy models, dodgy everything. Even everyone's hair feels dodgy and I'm pretty sure that's not what they were going for, trust me.Every single one of the cast members looks bewildered by the silliness of it all, Adrian Paul looks like he walked out of a pub incredibly drunk and Jim Byrnes is crying on the inside of his brain, probably asking the producers could he leave so he can head back to Voice Acting Land? Everyone else is a bunch of unknowns and most of em can't act for toffee. Also there is no such thing as "Direction" as not a single bit of it is to be found here. Then again I didn't expect much from Brett "I made that Lawnmower Man film where all the effects looked cool back then but are now unbelievably awful to look at" Leonard.Final drill to your brain or your eyes or any part of the body is that it was done by the sheer mastermind of awfulness, Syfy. Ahhh yes, that channel that can do great programs and miniseries but can't make a film to save their lives. It's no wonder we keep getting cluttered with this kind of crap.Davis and Panzer (the producers trying to keep this dead horse of a franchise alive) pretty much agreed with us all so the plug was pulled on the franchise and despite news of a remake coming soon, no one has attempted to make a sequel ever since.Thank goodness for that, these sequels have been getting more sillier and sillier. It's like these films are actually a competition to see who can make the worst sequel. Mr Mulcahy still takes the cake with 2 but Mr Leonard ain't behind with this stinker.Fun for aficionados of truly bad cinema, painful for everyone else.
bdk_solo I'm a huge Highlander fan. I loved every movie (including all versions of part 2) and the TV show. Pretty much if you slapped the Highlander name on it I was eating it up. Then came The Source. I was away at Basic Training when this came out. My dad taped it for me and waited until I came home to watch it. Probably my third day home we plopped down and turned it on. We were both excited to see it. And holy crap was it bad. When I say it's one of the worst movies ever I mean EVER! Not just "this is a bad Highlander movie." No, out of all the movies ever made, this is a top 10 worst of all time. And even that's being a little generous. I can't even point to anything specific because it was ALL bad. I don't understand how it's so difficult to make a good highlander movie. There was no charm here. Not even the nostalgia of seeing Adrian Paul back in action did anything for me. If you're a Highlander fan, avoid this movie and pretend it was never made.
Frederick Meekins ***THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS*****One of mankind's fondest dreams is no doubt to live upon this earth in vitality and youth beyond the paltry 75 to 90-odd years the healthiest among us get to enjoy. As such, one of contemporary fantasy's most compelling franchises has had to have been Highlander. The protagonist is himself immortal and gets to live indefinitely provided his head is not lopped by a fellow Immortal as these are destined to battle until there is a sole survivor among them as the catch phrase reminds the viewer "In the end there can be only one." It has been several years since an adventure of the legendary Scotsman, but if "Highlander: The Source" is any indication, it appears he is feeling his 400 plus years. For several years as this film plodded its way through production and distribution, fans were given hints that they would finally at last be provided with an explanation as to how the Immortals came to be in the first place. This convoluted story delivers none of that as the Source does not necessarily refer to origins.Though Highlander: The Source ultimately falls short in terms of the story, these shortcomings are compounded by the atrocious cinematography. Though broadcast in the early to mid 90's, the old Highlander TV series had better quality effects than the latest film in the series. For example, central to the milieu of the Highlander saga is the transfer of the quickening from the Immortal that has lost his head to the Immortal that has taken it. In the TV series, this was depicted by an impressive display of lightening bolts and electric shocks. However, in The Source, these scenes are not nearly as impressive. The electric charges are now less distinctive artistically with the emphasis now on the head rolling away, something that was only alluded to and seldom seen in the older episodes.Relatedly, in the TV series, the sword fights leading up to this dramatic exchange of life force were often depicted as elegant, almost dance-like encounters. However, in Highlander: The Source, these are now filmed with the same herky-jerky camera action used in many productions today such as the new Battlestar Galactica where viewers almost come away nauseated because the directors think they are too good to shoot images with a steady, smooth hand.Highlander: The Source is such a disappointment that, if one did happen to be an Immortal, one might just very well be tempted to slit one's own throat than rather spend an eternity watching this movie for an eternity.by Frederick Meekins
Morbius Fitzgerald Highlander sequels have never had a glowing reputation. If I was to say it, there are only 3 Highlander films worth watching (Highlander 1, Highlander: Endgame & Highlander: The Search For Vengeance) and this movie makes them look like they should be in the Hollywood hall of fame. Before I start, let me say it is nearly impossible for me to rate something 1/10, I try and find something to compliment even if I thought it was crap (so much so that I gave Highlander 2 a 2/10).What makes this film so bad that Highlander 2 fairs a better rating? Everything that a Highlander protagonist has, Duncan(at least in this film) has not. Adrian Paul is a good actor but like Christopher Lambert is overshadowed by a really awful script that highlights him for no reason, "your impossible to corrupt", Yeah, Byee.Everything a Highlander fan will tell you about this is probably true, a priest with a blonde Mohawk, a guy that moves faster than the speed of light gets knocked down by a car, Post apocalyptic world where everyone can get enough fuel, red mist appearing and disappearing while inside a cemetery etc. There will be plenty for someone to criticize.Overall, there is no other way to describe it, this film is crap.
