ThiefHott Too much of everything
Lightdeossk Captivating movie !
Casey Duggan It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny
Dana An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
michael denison I love it but wait! It doesn't have a real story to tell. Four or five people talking,,, and it makes no sense,, except at the end,,, by then it doesn't matter. Why didn't someone convince Shearer to play Mrs Minniver,, better,, or both,,, Hall Wallace wanted her for ''now, voyager''. at Warners. 1940 ''Escape'' also with Taylor, the critics love this film. When it was released on VHS/DVD....... viewers appreciated the film. .....1941 Taylor and Lana Turner in; Johnny Eager''. And Robert Taylor almost always looked good..........As Garbo, Crawford, Shearer, Garland, Monroe. Cukor was directing many of these ladies end of carrier, films. I fail to see how he was so helpfull to lady stars......Norma Shearer was wonderful, beautiful here,,, even if her clothes were not particularly flattering. Had Shearer gone on to a film-noir,, but then she was gone. ......................... It is a lovely film,, better the second time. And she seemed to not want to work again.................. But Norma Shearers early silent films as her early Talkie's before the code. Re-discovered... Her beautiful voice......She lived in to the 1980's....... ''escape'' is wonderful, Norma was... oh.. still wonderful.
dertzveitefint-1 I'm amazed at the difference of opinion on this one. I watched it and thought it so good that I checked Yahoo to get more info and was plain flabbergasted to see one star. It's better than Adams Rib as far as I am concerned. The comedic timing is letter perfect and Shearer, Taylor and Sanders are nothing short of brilliant and in that order. The lines are witty and the insanity of love is well and tartly limned and it knew exactly when to end and how to. Cukor knew how to handle this wonderful material and kudos for him. Now I have to find out who is responsible for the clever script. Less Shakespeare (Taming of the Shew or a Midsummer Nights Dream) it's the best light comedy I can remember seeing in a while.
Pittwater I don't know what all the fuss is about. Most of the criticism directed at this film is fairly unjust. After reading some reviews, I was hesitant at watching the film, but because it starred Robert Taylor, Norma Shearer and George Sanders, I thought I would give it a shot. I'm glad I did. It didn't make me turn off the TV set or change channels. The acting was excellent and the story was played out quite amusingly by the main cast. I believe the cast held up the film well. I have no problems with Shearer's age. After all, it's just a comedy. Jean Arthur was in her 50s when she was in Shane and 10 years older than Van Heflin too and no one criticized her. See and judge for yourself and never listen to critics. They don't know what they are saying half the time. We all have different tastes.
Pat-54 Despite direction by George Cukor and a cast that included Norma Shearer, Robert Taylor and George Sanders, this film flopped at the box office. Norma Shearer, having previously turned down the roles of Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone With The Wind," and Kay Miniver in "Mrs. Miniver," called it quits after the release of "Her Cardboard Lover" and never again appeared in another film.
