Kien Navarro Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
Nicole I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
Hattie I didn’t really have many expectations going into the movie (good or bad), but I actually really enjoyed it. I really liked the characters and the banter between them.
Philippa All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
haider ejaz (hyder_sagg2003) The movie is nice and very better when compared to stupid Bollywood flicks which they just make trying to earn money. The Best Part of Gangster is the Music and Story , But the screenplay and Direction are not very good. Editing is far behind and probably the worst part of the movie... and ending isn't that powerful as well....But this one is one of the best I have seen from Bollywood. Also I forgot to mention the cast of the movie have performed so well and they all are New comers ...Anyways its a late review..... Movie gets 7.5/10... or 8/10. :) my generosity.
rsa5387 One of the best Bollywood films of 2006, Gangster is an emotionally charged gritty love story that takes its place as one of the best Indian gangster films ever made, and one of the finest films of 2006, Bollywood or not. On the surface, the film fol...(read more) lows a simple story of a woman (Kangana Ranaut) who falls in love with a man who turns out to be a notorious criminal (Shiny Ahuja), and the consequences of that decision inadvertently lead to a lifestyle she grows to discern. Frustrated with her current situation, she eventually falls into the arms of another man (Emraan Hashmi). Beyond this simple story, what happens next through the narratives many twists and turns makes Gangster a film that will not only entertain, but touch your heart as well. While the film possesses a powerful story, its trump card is the films emotionally charged performances. Kangana Ranaut makes her debut as Simran, and is a revelation. She deserved a best debut win and an actress nod for this, if no t for her other release last year, Woh Lamhe. Emraan Hashmi is excellent but underused as Aakash. This is primarily because he doesn't have too much to do for the first half. He shines in the second half. His best acting stint too date. But the real star of the film is Shiny Ahuja. He is absolutely outstanding as the gangster. The flashback scene, the scene where he breaks down in Kanganas lap, and his violent outburst towards the end of the first half are highlights of the film. This role was definitely award-worthy, its criminal he didn't garner any for it. Shiny has proved, in a short time, that he is an actor of enormous caliber. One of the finest performances of 2006, India or not. Beyond acting, the other star is the soundtrack. A massive hit when it released, its a pity the film wasn't as well received as its haunting score. All the songs are shot well (especially Lamhe Lamhe) and are well placed in the film. As always, the direction is well done by Anurag Basu. He proves hes a director of substance after 2003's moving Saaya. The cinematography is well done. Seoul's photogenic locations are put too good use. Overall, Gangster is one of the strongest Hindi films of 2006, and its well worth checking out.
HeadleyLamarr I am told this is an adaptation of the real life story of Abu Salem and his girl friend Monica Bedi. Shiny Ahuja is the gangster Daya and on the run he one day runs into an unsophisticated bar girl Simran. Simran saves him from the pursuing police and then love inevitably follows. Daya and Simran have to flee to escape the clutches of Khan (Gulshan Grover), the underworld boss. Somehow a child gets into this mix.. why? The child is killed, Daya is somehow in the middle east and Simran in Seoul. In Seoul she meets and falls in love with Akash (Emran Hashmi), a night club singer. Daya discovers this, a jealous confrontation follows. Simran is torn between Akash and Daya, betrays one and is betrayed by the other. The end is a Utopian togetherness in green fields of something...The plot is riddled with problems, and the dialog is quite clichéd and silly at times. The unsophisticated bar girl turns sophisticate really fast, and plays the victim in a nauseating sort of way. Emraan Hashmi reminds me of a bunny rabbit with his short upper lip and teeth showing. His lip locks with Kangana made me a bit sick - kissing is one thing, eating someone is another. I have always liked Shiny but here he fell a bit short - the angry moments were okay but the weeping was very artificial and the overall role was not very appealing. So in the end Kangana was the one who came out ahead of these seasoned actors - perhaps she even deserved her most promising newcomer award. I saw Woh Lamhe before this and loved it, but I worry that she will always play the victimized girl - both roles were almost interchangeable. The music was very nice, loved Ya Ali - copied or not, other songs were very good too. In the end I found Gangster to be an OK film, not particularly engaging or appealing but still with some indefinable quality that most films lack these days. Maybe it was the little twist at the end but the last third of the movie was the best part. A word of advice to Kangana - if the next role demands a hospital scene or a victimized person - please say no, it is too early in your career to get typecast. And say no to Mahesh Bhatt, please. The direction was okay - why was everything so dark and enclosed throughout the film. And is it fair to the Koreans to show them nonchalantly going about their business while a man is being beaten to death in front of their eyes? They do have cell phones you know and the police is a mere phone call away.
rock831983 Finally watched gangster last night Remember Mahesh Bhatt..the writer, director and great story teller of 90's In last few years he got lost somewhere But with gangster he is back with a powerful and heart touching script Well all said and done whether Gangster lives upto the expectations? Yes in someway and no in somewayStory: As every1 knows. Most of the story is in flashback Aakash loves Simran but Simran hesitates cause of her past.Later we come to know Simran had an affair with Gangster in past. Just when Aakash and Simran make love 'gangster' comes back and simran had to make choice.Whether to go with gangster or to stay with AakashCritic: Negative points: 1.The most negative aspect of movie is its slow pace.Sometimes when Kangna narrates the story you might feel lost somewhere And to be frank we went for the movie with 12 friends and more than half of them didnot liked the movie mainly due to slow pace which forced to boredom 2.Kangna is in a lifetime role. But her voice really don't suit much and don't make much impact 3.Kangna is brilliant sometimes and overboard and irritating sometimes especially in crying scenes 4.The portion where Shiny pleads Kangna to give him one more chance is just crap and over melodramatic.Especially when shiny tries to cry.I was not expecting such from Shiny Ahuja U can listen many people laughing in that scene although it tries to be emotional one 5.The scene at seoul station in climax.Shiny tries to cry too much.I was expecting to see his expressive eyes again in that scene rather than cryingPositive points: 1.Brilliant Music 2.Splendid performances 3.Well twists and turns 4.This movie has soul and heart 5.Classic endingWell don't know whether Kangna will get such a role in lifetime or not.But this is a role which any actress should die out to work for. She is incosistent. She goes overboard in crying scenes and her voice had negative impact. But she had done a wondefull job looking that its her first movie. She is brilliant in some scenes Especially she is quite good post interval.A talent to watch out for.7/10 for her performanceEmraan Hashmi is good.He had done what he was given.5/10 for his performanceNow the show stealer Shiny Ahuja.Well apart from the two scenes which i mentioned in negative points he was just outstanding An actor to watch out for.Needs to improve in crying scenes. He lits fire whenever he comes on the screen. With his expressive eyes he says all.The anger, emotion and the unconditional love for Simran comes out through his eyes.Gangster rocks cause shiny ahuja rocks. He is just brilliant. 9/10 for his performanceGangster is story of love, betrayal and sacrifice.Definitely a powerful story and could have turned classic if it had been managed better and could have been a little fastYa ali song and the shootout is just perfect and shiny's expressions are brilliant U get shock in the opening scene of movie itself. In the very beginning Kangna says she wants to live anyhow till morning. And u will keep guessing what she wanna do in morning And u will get the answer in the end only. The end is indeed classical and touches your heart and leaves u speechlessGangster takes the deeper look inside the heart of gangster. They are human beings and every1 wants love.Cant tell much about BO cause of its slow pace. But thanks Bhatt Sahab for coming back with a powerful script and which is not a Hollywood copy This Gangster had heart and soulKuch Jyada Nahi Manga Tha Zindagi Se Par Zindagi Badle Me Hamesha Mujhse Kuch Kyada Hi Mangti Rahi(Kangna)....Gangster
