Acensbart Excellent but underrated film
Invaderbank The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.
Wrapper30 Wow this movie left a warm glow inside you and proves that Adam Sandler is actually a fine actor. It feels like it is almost autobiographical as Sandler's character George is very rich but clearly not happy. Maybe that is how Adam feels about fame? George treats women like crap but clearly it is because he feels that way about himself. In the second half of the movie we see why as he rekindles his romance with his first true love before he became famous. However Eric Bana and two great kids come in to play. Bana is great.Excellent support from Jonah Hill and a whole host of cameos. My favourite is Eminem chewing out Ray Romano for staring at him.
FilmBuff1994 Funny People is a great movie with a very well developed storyline and a fantastic comedy cast that also do a really good job in scenes when they need to be more dramatic. It's another very well written comedy drama from Judd Apotow, which features a career turn for Adam Sandler,he takes a break from goofy comedies to play a character who really develops as we see him start off as a very pompous character and soon learns from his mistakes and becomes a better man,George Simmons is certainly one of the best performances of his career and without a doubt the character I had the most sympathy for out of everyone he's ever played.Seth Rogen also played a very normal character who I had the most sympathy for, partly because I am a huge fan of Rogen but also because I could really relate to him at times, particularly the awkward situations he was in and the way he just smiles when he can't think of anything to say.The film does bring in some great laughs as well of course,a lot of scenes had me in stitches and there are some quotable lines also.A serious story that still manages to bring in laughs,Funny People is a very enjoyable movie that I would recommend to anyone looking for a good comedy or drama. When a rich comedian finds out he has leukemia,he reconsiders his life, helped by an aspiring comedian.Best Performance: Adam Sandler Worst Performance: Eric Bana
rooprect To all the people who say this was not a funny movie, that it was an hour too long or that it got confusing toward the end: my friends, you are the victims of lousy marketing. With a DVD box that boasts "LAUGH OUT LOUD" and "HILARIOUS" in a font so big you can see it from the international space station, you'd think that this is a spleen-splitting comedy. But, while it does have some great moments, "Funny People" is foremost a drama. If you've seen Adam Sandler's 2002 film "Punch Drunk Love", that might give you an idea of the mixture of drama & comedy, except I'd say the drama is even heavier here. And at 2 1/2 hours long, you'd better have a pretty decent attention span to stay with it.If I haven't scared you off, then awesome. You might like this movie as much as I did. Adam Sandler plays an entertaining but not particularly likable character named George. George is a comedian, but right in the first 10 minutes his life takes a dark turn when he learns that he has a type of leukemia. The rest of the film is about him trying to cope with his bleak future while trying to reconnect with his past. All of this is set against the ironic backdrop of the stand-up comedy circuit, and that juxtaposition is what I found brilliant about this movie. If you're watching closely, you realize that his stand-up routines are actually quite depressing, but the fact that it's told at a comedy club makes it funny to the audience. Thus the theme emerges: there's a fine line between comedy and tragedy.Things get really heavy in the 2nd half when George's ex girlfriend enters the picture. No, it's not exactly madcap hijinks (although the ex's new husband is absolutely hilarious); instead it becomes a very convoluted tangle of love, friendship, lust and loyalties... and everything seems to be at odds with everything else.I never saw any of Adam Sandler's crazy comedies back in the 90s (Happy Gilmore, etc), so to me he's just a good, quirky dramatic actor like I've seen in this film and the excellent "Punch Drunk Love". Of the two I prefer Punch simply because Sandler's character is more endearing. If you haven't seen it, go watch it immediately."Funny People" has a ton of cameo appearances by well known comedians & personalities like Sarah Silverman, Paul Reiser, Andy Dick, Ray Romano, Eminem, Aubrey Plaza, and easily 20 more I didn't recognize. It's a lot of fun to watch, just don't expect the movie to be as funny as the people that are cast in it. "Funny People" is a serious drama with a funny twist.
Mike Keski Funny People was an interesting movie, some people say it isn't funny at all, but it really is at times, it's just darker than your usual comedy, it's definitely not the horrible reviews some people give it. Also there is no spoilers here, what I type is in the trailer anyway.George Simmons (Adam Sandler) is a rich and lonely a-hole, who used to be a huge Stand Up comedian and made some shoddy movies, Kind of like Eddie Murphy in that sense, then George becomes ill and decides to seek some meaning in his life, he has an epiphany of sorts I suppose, in doing this he heads down to the local stand-up comedy parlor and meets a young comedian, Ira (Seth Rogen) and befriends him and offers him a job writing Jokes for him, he ends up becoming his best friend, his only real friend, Ira is the only person who knows about the illness and George Simmons life is starting to change, he stops being a self centered, a-hole During this time we meet Ira's friends and see the nice various little sub-plots going on with some relationships and the film starts to get really interesting, and you want to get involved. Now shortly after this, the film kinda goes haywire, a big twist, I am not going spoil it and say what happens, but many of those subplots I was talking about disappear and a new main plot takes place, much of the humor comes from this, but similarly a lot more drama takes place, and Adam Sandler is not-that-great at the Drama side of it, his voice goes all quiet and croaky, perhaps it could have worked with a different actor, I don't really know, Sandler did okay, but he handles his drama wrong. The movie is still good and I feel that what occurs during this twist is great and very complex, confusing at times, and interesting, but it comes at the cost of what began unfolding at the start of the film which is a shame. The film has a great resolve though, I really like the ending, while the route to it was confused, complicated and or contorted, I like how it ended, it returned to its roots at the close. Unfortunately I am left missing the sub plots that were never fully explored.
